In Finland the "human centipede " was just a piggy train , I don't think anyone there made the connection to the human centipede , but in every other country, that's what people said about it, as soon as they saw it. Thank you for doing another kaarija reaction !

    • @naniyodesu
      @naniyodesu Рік тому +27

Yeah, it's definitely not a reference to the human centipede. It's just a silly choreography :) It's actually kinda funny how to many foreign people it felt sinister because they linked it to human centipede, but for Finns it was mostly just funny and silly.

yes, in finland it's called a piggytrain after a kids amuzement park ride. it has nothing to do with a some film.

    • @TheTygertiger
      @TheTygertiger Рік тому +11

The whole piggy train was invented to integrate Käärijä more in the dance routine of the backing dancers. He was getting overshadowed by the dancers. He's not strong at learning complicated choreographies, so they wanted something simple for him to join on. The piggy train kind of matches the lyrics, because he's singing about being so drunk he slurs his speech and looks cross-eyed, just a couple of stages of drunkenness below the stage when your legs don't carry you anymore. Then you'll be moving almost on all fours.

If anybody deserves a special it’s Kaarija!
The timeline was this music video first, then his performance at the Finland selection. He beat other Finish artists by a land slide. Worth a watch as it’s a great performance! Then finally it was the Eurovision show.
    Can we get one more

Every country has a different method of selecting their representative. Finnish national selection introduces the 7 pre-selected songs to the public by music videos, published one after the other, a song a day. Not many people had heard of Käärijä until this video dropped. The country went crazy overnight. Suddenly everyone was talking about this guy. He went from being almost unknown to the biggest celebrity in the country pretty quickly. I've never seen a phenomenon like that, the whole Eurovision journey was something like Beatlemania. This video is how everyone got to know Käärijä. After this came the live national selection, which he won by a landslide, obviously, and then Eurovision. You can watch the UMK23 (Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu) performance to see the evolution of the performance. I actually almost prefer it to the Eurovision performance, you get more close ups of everyone's creepy little face, so unhinged, love it.

The performances just kept getting better imo. The music video was great, but the national final was awesome, and then the Eurovision final even improved on that. I hope they check out the national final to see the differences with the staging and dancers.

So the town he is from painted a huge mural of him on the side of a 4 ish story parking garage building. The city gave him an apartment free for 1 year. The whole of Finland went wild for him and everything that was that lime green was just rebranded as Käärijä gear. -American in Finland

Yeah, you were right about the lyrics. 😁
I am sure this has been played in many weddings this summer, as this has been EVERYWHERE in Finland since February. It became an absolute madness around the Eurovision time in May, and even this color of green became a thing, like people selling all kinds of random "Käärijä-green" things online for good money.

Here some clarification to Ä and Ö. The dots on A and Ö are umlauts which make them very different letters from A and O. Ä is kind of the same sound when you say "cAt", "bAt", "hAnd" just umlauts on A's. In English you can pronounce A in many ways, but in Finnish the pronounciation stays always the same, so the sound of Ä is always like how you somewhat spell the A's in exemplary words.
Ö, like O, you can spell it in several ways in English, but letter Ö pronounced in Finnish is somewhat similar to e.g. letter I in words "bird" or "thirst" or "first".
So pronounciation of Käärijä will cause some hard time because in English there are no letters Ä and you do not have any idea what an Ä should sound like. And in Käärijä's name, there is actually a long Ä in the beginning. Many who speak natively English start to twist the letters, because even if there was double A's in English, it would not sound anything like Finnish AA or especially ÄÄ.
You could try to listen to any of his Finnish interviews to get the sound, how the interviewer or himself pronounce his name.

I translated the song lyric around half a year ago and along the way to ESC final I found some interpretations to the lyric. On the surface, it is basically about partying or wanting to party, but it does have a reference to the Finnish culture, how Finnish men (or in fact people also in other countries might) feel shy about their dancing or looks or anything, and to somehow process all the uncertainty or shyness or fear of judgement, they need to have a few pints of beer or "pina coladas" to "care less".
There is a reference to the outer shell (tää jäinen ulkokuori) or serious face (silti mul on vielä naamataulu vakava) which might mean that in Finnish culture people who do not drink, might be considered as somewhat inable to have fun or they being always serious. So to break this "icy shell" and to get that "serious face" off, he needs more alcohol. But the song is heading only toward the dancefloor (tanssilattia) which is eventually calling him when the whole mood of the song changes. And suddenly we have a part that is not talking about drinking, but pouring champagne all over his body as he is dancing and loosening up.
The whole concept of the song caused a lot of talk before ESC as some people only considered it a stupid song about drinking and getting wasted, while from my sober perspective it is all about the social, cultural and psychological boundaries one individual could have to restrict him to be who he is. And this is expressed in the softer singing part: "ordinarily I am not this man at all, I am not, but today I am that man, I am that man". Of course there could be some discussion about another stereotype that comes to my mind. Is it really so that people can actually be themselves only when they are drunk? I have heard that phrase several times since my childhood to adulthood.
So, even though the song lyric is quite simple, it can be taken to whole other levels of understanding why people use alcohol, how the boundaries change our personality into something we are not, and how either dancing or consuming alcohol could actually break us free. Just by forgetting all the troubles we have for at least a moment. And Käärijä himself has expressed that it is not promoting drinking, but criticizing it.

I did not know Käärijä before UMK (national competition). I had heard one of his songs, but I could not name the performer back then. But after Eurovision final I was just amazed by him and his energy. The rapping is solid and the music itself is usually quite what I generally like. Although I am over 50 years old, I still have a quite huge spot in my heart and mind for Eurodance, industrial metal, progressive dance, EDM etc. Originally it was Emimen around 25 years ago who made me understand rap as a form of art of storytelling. I never considered myself a big fan of rap, but Käärijä brought something new on the table: a cross-over of several genres that become sort of a blend of rap, metal and EDM. His newest single It's Crazy It's Party goes also all the way to Eurodance. It sounds like something from the turn of the millennium.
But his other songs sound very different. They have a very different vibe to them. Especially Mic Mac and his first single Urheilujätkä.

If interested, UMK (Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu) did release a version of the music vid with English captions - ua-cam.com/video/rNrgQm5z07U/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared . iirc all the entrants/ artists who were competing in UMK were given a set budget to produce their music vids. This is what is released first before the live performances. The dance move which looks like a 'human centipede' is called the piggy train in Finland.

The costumes in the music video are inspired by professional wrestling / Mexican wrestling / Lucha Libre. And yes, the mask is painted on the face of the man who is outside the ring. That man is actually the producer of this song.

When he beat himself with knockout he becomes master and enjoy whitch represent he is drunk and ready to enjoy party. And everything in song is crazy :)

If you truly enjoy this, I'd recommend you check out the band Electric Callboy. Their style or genre is partycore. They are a German band and just returned from a sold out North American tour.
    Suggested Top 5:
"We Got The Moves" - Has a similar intro like "Cha Cha Cha"
    "Hypa Hypa" - Just fun.
"Pump It" - They wanted to enter this for the German national final for Eurovision 2022"
    "Tekkno Train" - Can't even describe this.🤣
"Everytime We Touch" - Yes, it's a Cascada cover.

The chorus is a fun play on words "Pidän kaksin käsin kiinni juomista niinku" -> "Holding on to the drinks with both hands like" Cha Cha Cha (Play on the chug chug chug). And later on when he has drank himself nice and he enjoys the party and sings "So now i go dance like a little cha cha cha and I wont be afraid of this world anymore".
ALSO Good news for both of you, Käärijä actually has a sidekick called Häärijä who has the same bowlcut and facial hair, but uses a yellow suit! He was actually one of the blond wig Käärijä versions in the music video too XD
SPEAKING OF WEDDINGS. The local church ruined it by making it into a very cringy bible song with cha cha cha replaced as jee-jee-jeesus. It got viral and everyone got put off by that XD
Lastly I want to translate my favourite part which is the:
"Cha, cha, cha, toinen silmä jo karsastaa --- Cha, cha, cha, the other eye is running away. (meaning youre so drunk youre looking 2 different directions)
Ja puhe sammaltaa ku tää toinen puoli must vallan saa --- And the speech slurs a little while this other side takes a hold of me. (the drunk me)
Cha, cha, cha, en oo arkena tää mies laisinkaan --- Cha, cha, cha, during the week im not this man.
En oo mut tänään oon se mies, tänään oon se mies --- No im not, but tonight i am the man, tonight I am the man.
If you do watch the music video "mic mac" like some people have recommended, my small summary of the lyrics is: he talks about different dumb things he did as a kid such as running his mouth off to older boys, how the apple doesnt fall far from the tree but when he did, he busted his wrist or stealing couple pokemon cards from friends(no hard feelings). And now all grown up visiting grandmas place to look through photo album to have the nostalgia from childhood. In the song the Mic Mac was a popular clothing brand in Finland who all the cool kids wore. Like he said; Don't matter the colour, as long as fit was fat.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk

Okay, so all the danes help me out here; every time you see this song does it not make you think of "Tu-tu-tusindben"? Here is a link to a performance of the centipede song if anyone is curious as to the degree of my madness: ua-cam.com/video/xlK9fWRS090/v-deo.html
The first time I saw "Cha cha cha" and every time I see it still, I can not help but think about a danish childrens song about a centipede. Turns out that the guy who wrote that centipede song also wrote some of our more popular eurovision songs. At first glance the songs are nothing alike, but there is something about the outfit, the dancing and the theme at the end of the song, that is so alike to the childrens song. I can't help but wonder, if the finnish entry knew about this song. The fins are our nordic brethren after all.
On a personal note in fifth grade our english teacher performed that centipede song at our schools own version of eurovision/melodi grand prix, and I remember wondering if that was how it felt to be on drugs.
