I need a laser to permanently apply text to stainless steel and brass coupons, none larger than 100mm. There will be hundreds of them, each different. The stainless will need to withstand permanent exposure to the harshest sun and wind for years at a time. When you say this machine will mark metal, does that mean it will be satisfactory for my needs or do I need to think fiber lasers?
Any diode laser will as you say, mark on stainless steel, not truly engrave the metal. Having said that, yes the mark is permanent. I expect it will do what you ask of it right out of the box. However, if you really want to ensure a dark solid permanent mark, I suggest you use a laser marking spray. watched several of you videos, but not one on engraving acrylic. I know you have to have something underneath the acrylic so the lazer does not just pass through. My question is some acrylic blanks have colored protective coverings, some blue heavy plastic and some a brown cardboard looking color. If you just remove one side of the of the covering are those backing colors solid enough to keep the lazer from passing through?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the Atomstack X7 Pro. It seems to use the same laser module as this one. It is a more traditional extruded aluminum chassis but that allows for easy future work area expansion.
Agree. I already own the Atomstack M50 laser module retrofitted to an earlier A5 20W and I haven't done much at all with it but I did cut 3/8 solid Poplar fairly fast. But I really don't do much cutting at all. But it is definitely a hotter laser for sure.
When cutting plywood with a 10W machine like this, what is better - setting it to a higher power and doing fewer passes, or going for a lower power with more passes?
Most people will mod an air assist with a cooper tube attached to the side of the laser head that then attaches to rubber tubbing and finally a compressor. So the air doesn't go through the actual laser module is just is coming in from the side.
@@Firstleaker - It was deleted. It was a pretty detailed post. It was a breakdown between the xTool D1 and the Comgrow Congo Z1. I even edited it, because of an error on my part.

I have owned Dell, HP's, iPads, etc over the years if that helps. I would prefer to spend any extra money I have on goodies for the engraver, but I want a laptop that will work well with the engraver without a lot of fuss. Thank you for your time and Thank You for posting this video. Your feedback is what I used to determine which engraver I want.
The sample metal dog tag included in the package lasered like a champ. But I yet to find another uncoated metal that will do the same? What am I doing wrong? There's a setting for stainless steel, but it doesn't do anything on metal blanks.
Can this machine cut out thinner acrylic? I make jewelry with shrinky dinks but I've been thinking about upgrading to acrylic and getting this machine.
Yeh the K40 is probably the most interesting comparison. The biggest benefit you get going the K40 route is you move from diode to CO2 which means you get WAY more power (40W vs 10W). But you also get all the drawbacks in that is more heavy, less portable, takes up more space, needs water/compressor attached and has a much smaller work area. It really depends on the types of stuff you want to make. If you mostly want to do engraving that I would stick with the D1 or something from Ortur. If you really want to laser cut, then a CO2 machine is going to be your best bet.
Good day! Great review of the D1, awesome machine. Will you be doing a review of the M1? I would like to purchase one of these two to start a home business, however I can't make a decision. I am hoping your review will assist me with a final decision. Thank you
Great review! I've been waiting for some in-depth info on the D1 for weeks now. I am wondering, though, how it would do cutting very thin hardwood. They claim it can cut 6mm Basswood in one pass. My main use for a laser is cutting through 1.5mm hardwood (.062) of different species (Maple, Cherry, Walnut, etc). If you ever have a chance to check out that capability, I'd lover to know how it goes. I have a Glowforge now, but when it dies, I'd love to find a cheaper alternative. Thanks again for the detailed laser reviews!
Their software is actually pretty good, you can do pretty much everything you need. The design tools are pretty simple so if you mostly importing images it shouldn’t be a huge deal. Great video. This is very helpful. I am looking to purchase my first laser unit so this is part of my research. Have you looking at or tested the SCULPFUN S9 Laser? I would like to know your thoughts on that unit if you get a chance.
Great video! It was a toss up between this and the Ortur LM2 Pro, with the deciding factor finally being software. My first ever laser engraver was a Wainlux K6 with proprietary software and mobile app. On the xTool site I believe there's some sort of mentioning of D1 working with 3rd party software? I tried reaching out to make sure Lightburn was compatible but so far no response from xTool.
I've asked the same question and received a reply that their software is proprietary, though they are "working" on making their machine compatible with lightburn - though no indication of when to expect that capability.
in the video it says $650 in promotion coming down from $800. Now if I check it out it's $921 "in promotion" from $1116 These tech usually drop in price with time, don't they? What's up with this one? It's crazy expensive for more than 900 USD. For $650 it'd be very reasonable indeed.
The software is very poor and limits your abilities to use this to its fullest capacity. I bought it for the 10w laser, but had I known it would not use industry standard software, I would have made a different choice. By the way, do not upgrade from laserbox basic 1.1.0 to 1.0.1 it breaks the positioning ability on the burn screen. The earlier version works when you try to position the laser using the buttons to go left, right, up or down. On the new release, it seems to be very harsh on the motors and the laser starts moving diagonally (not in a straight line) as intended. Again, the software is beta release at best.
I want to make a simple logo coin to inset into my wood turnings. I have used purchased metal coins before but they get expensive. My plan is to engrave a metal disc (maybe a dog tag material) or maybe a more elegant disc like stainless steel or brass. My logo is not complex and I have it in a jpg or other formats. Can this machine do what I'm thinking? I don't want to invest $800 only to be disappointed. My coins are about 20mm in diameter.
I've watc hed a lot of your videos, they are great! How does this xtoll d1 10 watt stack up against Sculpfun s10? I've tried browsing your site for comparison.
Can a diode laser cut through clear acrylic? I've seen people paint them black to do the etching and then just remove the paint, would this work with cutting all the way through?
I want to start small business with laser engraver. All kinds of gifts, metal key chains... Mostly on wood, but i would like to have open option to engrave on metal, it doesnt need to be deep, just enough to not be wiped off. I would like to buy if possibly around 700$. But i will work a lot on that laser and i need it to work long term. Do you reccomend atomstack x7 50w dual laser? I also looked at ortur laser master 2 pro, but as i saw it is weak to cut through even 5mm wood. What do you think about x7 and if not can you reccomend me something else. I cant get xtool d1 shipped to my country(Serbia). And is it better to order from aliexpress or from official site, because sometimes the difference in price is arond 50-100$. By the way i love your videos, they are very detailed. Sorry for the gramatical errors my english isnt the best.

Yeh I'm still waiting to hear back about 3rd party software, fingers crossed!
It's NOT compatible with Lightburn or any other 3rd party software.
You got the LM2 Pro finally?
I've asked the same question and received a reply that their software is proprietary, though they are "working" on making their machine compatible with lightburn - though no indication of when to expect that capability.
@@benkenobi671 Looking to purchase today and it shows it IS compatible with Lightburn.
I'm trying to decide between this and the Atomstack X7 Pro. Which has finer detail and accuracy?
in the video it says $650 in promotion coming down from $800.
Now if I check it out it's $921 "in promotion" from $1116
These tech usually drop in price with time, don't they?
This laser is now compatible with Lightburn now.
Yep!
That WiFi antenna is pretty durable. You lifted the whole engraver on that poor thing and it survived.
Is this the one to buy? So many of them.
which would you suggest
I know you said it would engrave on stainless steel, however would it engrave on Sterling silver?
Wonderful video. Thanks so much!
Does the software allow upload of preexisting files you've made on other software?
Thank you for sharing nice video 👍👍👍does it cut 1/8” plywood?
How do you think it will perform on a non flat surface? Something with different elevations?
Nice review, very imformative
Good job Brandon! This or ORTUR Laser Master 2 Pro???
Laser Master 2 Pro will be better
Lightburn is now supported by the XTOOL D1!
Thank you
You're welcome
Hey Brandon, any chance you've tested this bad boy on 300gsm cardstock? Really wanna know for my intricate Wedding invitations
Great review!
Thanks!
Does it work on gold, silver, platinum? If not, would you be able to recommend one that is affordable?
I've watc hed a lot of your videos, they are great! How does this xtoll d1 10 watt stack up against Sculpfun s10? I've tried browsing your site for comparison.
Great informative video. Will it engrave aluminum flask
I noticed you didn't do your normal tests with this review, how does it compare to the Atomstack X7 pro?
Hi awesome content. Do you think it would be possible to use the laser by the memory card?. So you would not need to have computer in the same room.
So just to be clear, this unit CAN engrave annodized aluminum?
Can a diode laser cut through clear acrylic? I've seen people paint them black to do the etching and then just remove the paint, would this work with cutting all the way through?
I'd like to know as well. The official website says it laser cuts black acrylic, but I'm not sure why it doesn't mention clear.
Nice video, thank you! What is the real life hours of those diode laser machines? Thank you.
We can cut 5mm plywood. And our 10W can cut even 10mm Acrylic.
Is it good for online business? For leather wood aluminum keychain?
the xtool M1 costs a little more, would u say it would be worth it to buy the M1 over this one?
Hey, have you had a chance to evaluate the new Sculpfun S9? I've heard great things about it.
Lost me at can’t use lightburn lol :(
HI , great review !!! i love it !!!
this machine is looking grreat and i would like to purchase one but , before i move forward, i would like to ask you if it can cut white kite fabric .
I own a TT 5.5 S laser engraver, it works fine with ripstop kite fabric that i need to cut but the only 1 problem is that its not possible to cut white fabric.
Do you think that this 10 watts version could solve the problem ?
many thanks in advance and congratulations again.
Do you think this is a good engraver for hardwoods?
Have you heard of those double diode lasers? The two beams are focused on one spot creating a quite capable diode laser cutter. I'm very interested in that.
Yep, we get into it in this video since this unit is 10W and that's how they are making the beam.
Ah cool. I didn't realize this was one of those double diode units.
@@makeorbreakshop there is a youtuber "louisiana hobby guy" who cuts through 6mm plywoold with his double diode laser; in my mind that is impressive and more than just an engraving tool.
@@Kopsu87 Yeh you can totally cut through plywood but I usually suggest jumping up to a CO2 laser at that point, because will get at least 4X the power (40W at the low end) plus all the safety stuff you really need when cutting like an enclosure, air assist, cooling, etc.
Neje has a new 40w (15w output) dual diode laser module. I really want to upgrade my 7.5w output module to that one. (insert tim taylor grunt noises)
Do you have any recomendations for additional or better goggles?
Hey buddy just wondering in your opinion what is the best laser for 2022 is it the X tool D1?
For a diode laser I would lean that way. But the Ortur Aufero Laser 1 is also a great option!
Can you engrave bottle of wine using calligraphy using this laser engraving D1. Please need some advice!
So for a budget laser that can do everything including metal , what do you recommend?
Let's go Brandon!!
Just to let you know that’s a F Biden chant. It doesn’t mean he is cheering you on.
But nice video :)
@@TheTokuzoBurnings it can be both, right??
@@TheTokuzoBurnings Ha, after about the 5th comment I finally had to Google it... ;)
👏👏👏👏👏 LET'S GO BRANDON!!
Amen
Hey I gotta ask! Are you in the Mando Mercs?
Not yet, I really need to knock out a costume! Next project is probably an r2 build
How long does it take for this machine cut a 1/4" 4"x4" piece of wood with detail?
I own one and love it so far minus the software. Hopefully 3rd party integration happens soon.
Same!
Just received my xTool D1. It was a little bit off a struggle to assemble because off the small angles . I made it. ok.
Now I watch different video's but OMG.... it all goes so fast and I am not native english. Are there any of these in Dutch??
