    Nico, listen to those who have been there and done that. Absorb the info like a sponge no matter how trivial it might seem. Watch procedure and ask questions about why it's done that way and don't assume. Always hang out with those who are smarter than you and you will go far. My father always said that when I grew up I should be at least twice as knowledgeable as he if he did his job as a father... learn what he knew and what I have learned over the years and teach it to the next generation

    Nick, I built a 75 440 motorhome engine for my 86 Dodge Ramcharger 4x4. Had pretty good leak at the rear, would leak about 3 tablespoons on the garage floor after a drive. I decided to drive it a while before yanking it out to fix that. Well, at 378 miles the Comp Cam ate 2 lifters and lobes. When I pulled the engine, I found the leak at the rear, it was the cam welch plug, a puddle there and all down the rear of the block. Anyway, rebuilt the darn thing with a Crower cam and Johnson lifters and a new cam plug with silicone inside and out. No more leaks. same rear seal. So far so good. It`s a low compression 8:1 engine, but has all the torque I wanted. I wanted to be able to run the worst gas I would ever run into.

    Teacher and student. I like to use a down and dirty picture of two surfaces with a gap between them to show the student how to properly check feeler gauge clearances. A picture is worth 1000 words. Sometimes as in this video, it’s very tough because of the headers that are hot and the angle the feeler gauge needs to be in. The drag between the two surfaces can be affected by a bend in the feeler gauge, that’s why you see Nic moving the gauge back-and-forth to get the perfect 90° angle between the two surfaces.
    Just my humble observation. NWR

    Those rockers being full roller are a huge problem on bbm. The rocker load is displaced only on two or three of the rollers at all times and the oil that leaks past the rocker lowers oil psi considerably. I always use bronze bushed rockers, ensures a nice oil film wedge. Those look like 440source rockers...chinaJunk

    Nick , those rocker arms look like cheapo chinesium with the needle bearings. Sometimes the shafts and rockers aren't sized properly to each other, causing them both to wear prematurely. Sometimes the needle bearings just fall apart with higher spring pressures. I'm sure you already know this. I prefer the bronze bushed rockers instead of needle bearings. Nice build beautiful engine!

    You may have a bad valve spring or cam lobe on one of the front cylinders. If you notice on your pulls, it will spit fuel out of the front carb at lower RPM. It is pushing air back into the intake manifold and out the carb.

  • @OdiseoQuintin
    @OdiseoQuintin Місяць тому +10

    When adjusting valves back in the day, I really appreciated the design of the 273 adjustable rockers (probably circa '64-'66) which used a single "jam" style adjuster that did not utilize the separate locking nut. Really easy just to turn the screw either clockwise or counter-clockwise with one hand.

    46:42 Speaking of the poor breather cap on the passenger side I remember using the mopar breather cap that has a opening for a rubber hose that you can connect a hose to a one way valve welded to the exhaust pipe to suck the oil vapor into the exhaust and burn it out and vents the crankcase an old racer’s trick I learned from a old muffler shop so I would have one on each valve cover for each side. Worked great.

    I think that you need to get rid of the breather on the drivers side. As it is now, the pcv is only venting the driver side valve cover. If you close off the drivers side breather, the pcv will drawn air in from the passenger side ventilating the whole crankcase.

    • @mudlovr
      @mudlovr Місяць тому +2

      Pcv puts the crank case under vacuum that's why air goes in one side out the other

  • @FalconXE302
    @FalconXE302 Місяць тому +2

    You should always look for the oil leak on the engine Nick... if it gets down into the tray under the engine, that is a bad leak, but you could easily have a slow leak seal that doesn't leak enough for a drip yet.

  • @pockets5628
    @pockets5628 Місяць тому +3

    You need to remove the breather from the valve cover with the pcv, just put an oil filler cap on. Otherwise the pcv won’t pull air through the engine.

It was a 9.5-1 motor that used the Mopar Performance .509/292 hydraulic cam, Holley street dominator intake, a 0-3310 carb and blocked off the exhaust hear crossovers. I never used a high pressure oil pump because i thought that in daily driving applications, it might be too much for the engine seals to hold back. The added volume without the pressure was what i went with.
    Especially on an engine rebuild that i didn't get the crankshaft turned, and only polished.

    good to see Niko is worried about water drip that tells me He is very interested in making this type of work important to him as it is to Nick
    Niko long road ahead of you but your very very lucky to have an opportunity, a door, a path, to learn from a master tech. it's like training under a Great Chef, or master electrician
    time, passion, and hard work with a bit of self motivation. You will go far. read your books lol

    I'm not too keen on the six barrels I prefer two four barrels that engine would run a lot better

    After the nightmare Nick & Co. had with the headers/aluminum valve covers, I can’t help but wonder if Nick will place a moratorium on aluminum valve covers now?😁

    My favourite sealer is Permatex 2 for water and oil. It never hardens. Do not use RTV on bolt threads.
