You two had set yourselves one serious challenge... the main problem with disused railways is that they are disused so you can't just hop on a train to each stop.... this is gonna be one hell of an experience for you both. Love your editing style. Keep it up... remember Britain runs (or used to run) on tea, gin and rusty old rails

Colin at the Exeter & Teign Valley Railway is a good friend of mine for over 25 years. What he doesn’t know about railways isn’t worth knowing. I stayed there a month after your trip in 2018. He is the only person that has a joined up vision for the future of the railway.

I'm so glad I found your channel recently, i've loved all of the vids I've seen so far. This one especially is making me rather homesick as I grew up in Brixham so spent a lot of time around the Paignton & Dartmouth line and I also volunteered for the South Devon Railway as a fireman back in 2007. I'm now living in Alaska, lil bit far away from home to be doing that again but this has put a huge smile on my face and warm feelings in my heart. Thank you. Also, if you ever get the chance to head down this way again, try looking for Sorley Tunnel (used to be a family adventure attraction at one point) which is down near Kingsbridge. And if you keep going into Plymouth, there's some great remnants of the L&SWR running through the city. If you haven't already done so (you may have and I just haven't gotten to that vid yet), look up the Devonport and Ford tunnels that still run under Devonport Park (although mostly inaccessible these days).

Just discovered your channel and really enjoying it. Glad to see the comment you made below about Dartmouth, because it was a real station in that you could buy through tickets from there. I know it very well because my Dad (who would have been 90 this very day strangely) used to drive the British Railways parcel delivery truck down there back in the 60s. He'd take me with him on Saturdays and in the school holidays. We would load all the parcels from the train into the truck at Kingswear and then take the lower ferry across the river and sort them into delivery order in the station at Dartmouth (actually I'd be playing down on the ferry pontoon by now). Then it was off on and adventure that would take us all around Dartmouth (always a lot of parcels for the Naval College), Strete, Blackawton, Blackpool and Slapton. Very fond memories. He then got promoted to chargeman at Paignton where he stayed until he retired in the early 90s. I got promoted too because I got to ride up and down from Paignton to Kingswear in the DMUs that they were using until the line was closed by BR. So yes, please go back to Dartmouth, it is a lovely place. Even after 40 years of exile in Hampshire.
Keep up the good work. Brilliant channel.

Ref the dotted line on your sketch map. The Plym valley line ran up the valley via Yelverton to Tavistock. Also higher up the P.lymouth side of the valley was a tramway with granite sets. It was just metres from my then home next to Mainstone wood. The tramway was used to transport granite from High Dartmoor near Princetown to sea level at Marsh Mills. Much of both are walkable.
EDIT, I see you have explored here in other vids I just found. Thanks !

Have you done a video on any abandoned stations in Cornwall yet? There's Perranporth, St Agnes and Shepherds Stations on the Chacewater to Newquay branch (closed 1963). On that line there was also Mount Hawke, Goonbell, Mithian, Perranporth Beach, Goonhavern, Mitchell & Newlyn and Trewerry & Trerice Halts. This line had the highest number of stops in proportion to its total length of 18 miles 75 chains. And that's just for starters!

Well, that was a trip down memory lane. We used to live in Devon (Jo hails from there) so there were quite a few places that we were able to recognise, if briefly, as you thundered past. What you need are OS Maps on your mobile. It would certainly make tracking down the stations much easier, although not necessarily more fun. 🙂

There are some lovely disused stations to see here and since the Island is small, you can get them all done in day! Playing catch up [slowly], so well late. When you finally complete your rail challenge, could start another one of where council maintained loos used to be. Only joking, you'd never finish it.

Very late to the party Neil!... Shocking. Council loos!... If it's got potential for a clickbait title I'm in.

The money you spend on hotels would soon pay for a small motorhome, and keep mileage down on your car. Awesome videos anyway!

Paul, just one piece of advice... when trying to justify on'es ignorance of Harry Potter references you will do better to claim you have not read the books rather than you have not watched the films.
    Just sayin'....
    Keep up the good work!
