I loved this movie! I actually liked it better than the original, with the exception of Rita Moreno, I loved her in both versions. It was a beautifully cinematic. I actually shed a tear at the end because of how heartbreaking it was even though I already knew what would happen. The storytelling, cinematography, acting, singing and dancing were phenomenal!

At 9 years of age, i loved West Side Story when it came out. Watched this original movie many times. I was floored by the wonderful performances, the unfolding of the story, everything….. i like this new version even better! It’s even more arresting and powerful! Wow.
I think it is most beautiful to show the diversity in Puerto Ricans. They are all shades. This movie was very true to it's nature. I feel the audience got some cultural education.
Unfortunately, some audience members aren’t seeing it that way

What a show! The acting, the cinematography , the costumes, the music, it was so fabulous that I am going to see it again. I shed a tear at the end, it was magical beautiful. Bravo to the entire cast and director.

Just watched this movie and it was great!!!. I enjoyed the original West Side Story and this New Version from one of my favorite produces Steven Spielberg was definitely not disappointing. Living in New York in the 60s in the South Bronx it brought about a lot of memories as I remember playing stick ball in a dead end street, between several 6 story buildings and using the parked vehicle fenders and bumpers as baseball bases. The soft balls bouncing off the tall 6 story structures as we would run at full speed to catch the ball before it dropped to the floor, sometimes we would dangerously launching over obstacles to make the catch(DOM LOL) but fun. I want to give the movie a plus as there were no Spanish Captions on screen when the actors spoke in Spanish(WOW). The actors Latino NY PR cultural genre was of what I remember growing up hearing with friends and family, that almost made it feel a private joke for those in the audience like myself that spoke both English and Spanish and understood the comical language that was used at the time (60s and 70s). Fell in love Rachel Zegler a mix Hispanic actress and soon to be a "STAR"... The movie was funny , entertaining, romantic and full of energy. Would definitely recommend to see. (A+)

Omgosh I cannot believe David Alvarez's back story. That is insane.
West Side story has and will always be my favourite. Must have seen it so many times the film or theatre. I virtually know all of the script and songs. S oon as l hear the music the tears begin, because Tony and Maria never stood a chance, because of the hate. Fabulous dancing and singing.
Great backstory! Fresh take on a classic film.

Did Jamie Bernstein just say there were a lot of things in the original film that could stand improvement 😲? Boy are there ever!!! Like the leads - except for Anita and Bernardo. Maria and Tony had to be dubbed! And Tony? Could he dance? No, I don't think so. What a shame. Rachel Zegler is an amazing singer and even though I don't think Ansel Elgort is a particularly great singer, he is a wonderful actor and definitely looks the part. Who knows, maybe this version will win even more Oscars than the original ;-)

@@RaymondHng I love her voice but confess to being partial to Larry Kert (the original Tony). Just like Stephen Spielberg I grew up listening to the original Broadway cast. After that it's tough to hear others doing some of the same songs. Kind of like eating Gordon Ramsey 's roast beef which is probably 4 star delicious and yet you still prefer your mom's 😁!
@@milliemouse6525 I’ll have to listen to the original Broadway cast recording. Right now, I have the Michael Tilson Thomas conducting the San Francisco Symphony studio recording on the iPad. New Zealand soprano Kirk Te Kanawa portion on the studio recording of “One Hand, One Heart” with Leonard Bernstein (available on UA-cam) set the gold standard for me. As for Jose Carreras’ Tony, I can take it or leave it.
@@RaymondHng the real difference there is that they are opera singers and singing pop/Broadway songs are so much different, especially in the interpretation. I'm not an opera fan so I am a bit biased, but I never feel 'real' emotion when they sing. It's all a bit too melodramatic for me while Broadway actors/singers always get the message and emotion across. Think of Barbra Streisand song Don't Rain on My Parade to give one example.

Lol I didn't realize what I was watching until the end... so I started at part 2. I loved the old movie so much. I'm glad that they are redoing it... or is that a sequel?

Yes and no. He has stated that it is not remake from the original, but a different version of it. The music is more inspired from Broadway's West Side Story soundtrack than the film. There is another interview on UA-cam he does go more depth on it if you wanna check it out.

It’s an another adaptation of the 1957 Broadway play, not a remake of the 1961 film.
I only did one musical in high school Guys & Dolls.
My acting career peaked at age 7 when I played the tree that Oliver Twist sang “Where is Love” under.
I enjoyed the original movie but when I watched it as a kid I didn’t understand what they were fighting about??? Even though I understood what racism was… because all I saw was white people on the screen fighting other white people on the screen🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️ Plus I didn’t understand that it was in the ghetto some of them wore lovely suits etc???? Didn’t get it

To see boriqua and morena representation, people who actually look black and mixed race playing Puerto Rican people is so powerful, it humanises us as Black and mixed race people of the African diaspora. There is an acknowledgement of LatinX history, European colonisers, indigenous people and the enslavement of west African people that it all really happened and that we are really real. It’s acknowledges the injustice of xenophobia and white supremacy and how it connects to today #representationmatters
Plus I like the grit he gave it, whilst having that Disney glow, hard to mash up those 2 things but Spielberg did it. hats off off 🔥🔥🔥

Rita Morena , unbelievable talent and beauty . Unfortunately this version of West Side Story didn't make the impact they hoped for , in both societal and box office . It's a shame because it really is well made and Rachel Zegler was phenomenal , she deserved a nomination above everyone else in the film . But as you watch all the promo , interviews , news reports about the film , all they talk about is how they got it right this time , no subtitles , all Latina & Latino cast , which is terrific, but in this tension filled world , created solely by Politicians to spread division , gain votes , people want to go to the movies to escape reality , embrace the movie , but to have these political agendas in even the promotional materials . Spielberg kept saying the Latin X community , sounds so phony, not one Latin person outside of mainstream media or political candidates has ever used Latin X, and not downplay the Spanish by having subtitles , which also alienated a good portion of the audience . So much of the film is spoken in Spanish , without subtitles. How are subtitles racist ? If you go to any other Country they use subtitles so everyone can understand the language , for every film . Hollywood is so out of touch with everyone .They got it so wrong and everyone stayed away . It lost over 100 million , Spielberg's biggest financial bomb in his whole career . Still a shame because the film was well done , incredible cast and performances .

It's also kind of noticeable.
1. Good idea to have Rita Marino inserted into the script.
2. Best Actress role for the Oscar nomination will be Maria and amf then Anita for supporting Oscar nomination.
3. Second choice for best supporting actress: Rita Marino. (yes again)
4. I did not like any of the character actors choice for either the Jets or Sharks on this new movie.
5. I did not like the first act of the new movie as well as the Robert Wise first act directed version. Spelberg's 1st act was way too dark, but the second act of the new version made up for the 1st act's shortcomings.
6. My choice for which movie was better would be the flawless *1st* West Side Story. Robert Wise was the better Director in this for the 1st Movie version of the play, however I'll give spellberg best director for the second half of the movie.
7. In the first movie the Jet gang gave respect for the little girl playing on the ground and walked around her play area. In the Spielberg version the Jets ripped up the little girls artwork on the ground. I could not get behind the Jets after that.
8. I will give credit to the second new version in the second act, it did give me tears. But don't tell anybody that, I don't want my manhood questioned.
9. Good ending credits on the screen from Spelberg.
I hope Rita Moreno will bow out to give way to Ariana DeBose. I mean, we all know that Rita is one of the living legends of film industry and she already had a taste of Oscars, but Ariana is the best! Plus, it would be a history that two actresses won Oscars for the same role.

@@davidwoods8181 Yes it is. It limits a production with hiring the best people for the roles. Hiring the best performers should be the goal of any production. Ethnically appropriate is nice when it happens.

@@tazmin5020 That's not true. It depends on the ability of a particular actor. Sticking to a rigid standard of representation by an ethnic demographic will hurt the chances of the quality of the production. Actors usually have roles of people who aren't like them. By the way, the people who created West Side Story, that is to say its lyrics, music, and choreography are by all white men. Perhaps by using your standard of representation the musical should be disregarded as inauthentic?
