This movie does not dishonor the original but is like being reacquainted with an old friend who awaits you with open arms and after spending time with them you realize your love is even stronger now. It was like watching the original on steroids. Words can't describe my feelings for this picture. This was like Hollywood back in my day with a musical at its best. And in Dolby it was pure Heaven. Loved it!

This is exactly how i felt and i must have cried at the beginning of 3 songs from the emotion of seeing it done so lovely again.
This wasn't mean to be like the original, it's meant to capture the source material in a way Spielberg view it. So it's not a remake, it's readapting the show

@@crystalenergy7904 all I know is, I was so convinced of his absolute love of Maria, that I was cringing when Valentina was about to tell him she was dead. That's good acting.
@@liljade53 Because he was a bigger name (at the time) and a heartthrob with a theater background. I can bet there were so many people who auditioned for Tony that were far more talented

Incredible job. I can't believe they improved on the original, but the singing, acting, filming, all of it was so good. Highly recommend this movie.

Just watched this movie and it was great!!!. I enjoyed the original West Side Story and this New Version from one of my favorite produces Steven Spielberg was definitely not disappointing. Living in New York in the 60s in the South Bronx it brought about a lot of memories as I remember playing stick ball in a dead end street, between several 6 story buildings and using the parked vehicle fenders and bumpers as baseball bases. The soft balls bouncing off the tall 6 story structures as we would run at full speed to catch the ball before it dropped to the floor, sometimes we would dangerously launching over obstacles to make the catch(DOM LOL) but fun. I want to give the movie a plus as there were no Spanish Captions on screen when the actors spoke in Spanish(WOW). The actors Latino NY PR cultural genre was of what I remember growing up hearing with friends and family, that almost made it feel a private joke for those in the audience like myself that spoke both English and Spanish and understood the comical language that was used at the time (60s and 70s). Fell in love Rachel Zegler a mix Hispanic actress and soon to be a "STAR"... The movie was funny , entertaining, romantic and full of energy. Would definitely recommend to see. (A+)
This is a cast of talented actors. They are young so we will see a lot of them.
Such a amazing cast and great movie! Ansel surprised me, I expected him to be meh, and he was one of the greatest highlights of the movie.

Iconic film. However still frustrated at a few things being a Mexican American. Like 1: Why does a Latin girl not get a happy ending?
2: Why was the division and hatred and killing one another not addressed at the end of the film?
3: Why is the main white male character still portrayed as a hero, who even though he KILLS a brown man, his sister still continues to love him and ignore this fact?
Idk bout you all pero this all still irks me. The hate and division is never addressed. The only great part in my opinion, was seeing Rita Moreno's character as Victoria who was trying to help BOTH sides.
The division and hatred was addressed throughout the film, especially in the end. When Maria takes the gun and says that she can kill them all now that she has hate, she's calling them all out for taking away everything she loved with their hateful ways. It's subtle, but you can tell that both sides get it after it's too late. That's why both gangs comfort her and help carry Tony away. And although her ending is tragic, I still think it's better than Romeo and Juliet

It's sad. A Latin girl needs a happy ending, positive representation matters too.
@@qtasabutton21 yes, but that's not what this story is about. It's about hate and what a world full of it can do to someone with hope. This story was never meant to have a happy ending, that's not what it's about. If she and Tony ended up happy the entire meaning and message of the story would be completely different. It's still great representation to me, because a lot of immigrants do come to America with hopeful hearts and end up broken. But I completely agree with you that Hollywood movies lack Latino representation. And if a Latina is in a film she almost never has a happy ending or much development. I would love to see more of that in films, but I don't think it would have worked in this movie
@@143yese I get that's what this story is about, my point here is that we need to keep putting pressure on this narrative of tragic not worthwhile love that will get you killed. With the Latin girl always comparing herself (the scene of "I feel Pretty") to the ideal idea of white woman beauty. The more we buy into this narrative of a tragic, hate filled, not a happy ending type of films for Latinos this will continue to be the representation we will continue to get. It is not okay. To be okay with it.
Rather instilling confidence in our girls in our community is so very important. It's not okay IMO of this film for her to disregard this white boy killing her brother and then the scene still comes up that she decides to still love him and even sleep with him all because she "loves" him.
Do you not clearly see the white superior complex message sent here? It's saying it's okay for latin girls to not have value just because they love. It's interesting and important to pay attention to films in the far more subtle messages they send that catch the attention of all angles for the audience. I also dislike that Steven Spielberg is given so much praise, he continues to be a white man in the film industry. Why are we not pushing more Latin directors to direct a happy ending film for Latino girls to see? We need to push for positive, accurate, loving, inclusive representation too.
Not just tragic Romeo Juliet, guns, violence, narrative. Latin communities have so much more to offer than that. And it starts with changing THAT narrative about us in the films we watch, the music we listen to as well.
