I just literally fell onto this video. Wow what superb training and teaching you're passing on. I've subscribed Captain! Best from me Down Under in Middle Earth! Later!
That was awesome. That information is so secretive! Especially with a 747-400 and -8 no less. Now just have to learn how to power up the engines! Very very nice. Please keep coming out with more vlogs!!
Merci pour ces explications très pédagogiques . Je fais de la simulation et enfin je trouve une explication au pourquoi de l'activation de certains boutons.
Great clip as always Capt...I am a fan of all your vedios....just a quick query, did we missed to do APU fire test before firing up or is it not in check list anymore?
We don't do that. It's a maintenance function. Plus after you turn the apu off the apu will enter a cool down phase, which the fire system will be automatically tested.
Outstanding as always Capt Obet - sure appreciate the time and professionalism. Great checklist explanation - you stated certain items are where they are and why. Are those items verified to be in the correct position prior to engaging the battery (gear handle, flap, hyd pumps, etc)? For example, if the flap handle been inadvertently moved to 20 and Sys 4 Hyd left in Aux, would the flaps transition once batt switch was engaged or is that not possible until the APU is selected on? Verifying positions with the checklist after the battery was turned on left me curious. Thank you again for such amazing videos!!!
Great clip, Skipper. I am sure the junior colleagues appreciate your selfless attitude. the APU has a door that opens before it starts and I believe it remains open whilst the APU is operational. Kindly talk me through APU operations during the flight because thinking that the open door might be ripped off during the flight always puzzles me.
The APU door is an inward opening flap. So there would be no risk of it being „ripped off“. However, on 747-100 an -200, this door even had a scoop which was designed to catch the air for better start up of the APU during flight. It was discarded later from production and removed from planes already flying with it for drag reasons, because it was deemed to be unnecessary to start the APU during flight at all.
The '47 is still a favorite ship. I'm curious, though. The APU is a turbine engine, much like the main engines but smaller. When starting the APU, is the fuel management automatically handled (once the turbine has spooled up to ~21% N2)?. In contrast, when starting one of the main engines, as it gets cart or bleed air, you monitor the N2 rpm's before introducing fuel, manually. Always interesting to see cockpit video. Thanks and safe travels.
Why is it getting noisy once the airplane is “alive”? Is it the AC starting to operate? I always thought it was the APU that made the most noise up until the engines are turned on. And great video of course!
when you start the APU, which I understand is a mini jet engine, an you get a hot start? I notice you were not monitoring any instruments when you started the APU...
Is the elec power up suppl. Procedure checklist always supposed to be used or is it usually done from memory? It's not clear to me which suppl. Proc should be memorized and which not. Thx in advance!
Hello Captain, I would like to know if learning to fly is self funded or funded by the company to train you. How did you get into Cathay Pacific? I would like to hear your story, which is worth a video
Captain Obet is a true expert on the 747. I like how he explains the rationale behind each item on the checklist. Keep the good work captain!

I hope they'll still be around when I become a pilot 🇿🇼
Always great seeing you and your videos Sir Captain Obet.
Captain was departing Sydney on Monday on a domestic work trip and saw the Cathay 747-8 at the cargo terminal.
Fascinating stuff! It's nice to see most of the instruments in the flight deck are still analogue.

Awesome! We hardly get to see stuff like this. I'm a little surprised the checklist didn't call for a fire test of the apu prior to startup
@@traffictraffic new Boeing procedure does not require it as it will shutdown and automatically discharge extinguishers too on ground.

Normally the APU will be shut down before flight - the door will close.
- the generators on the en gines will take over the electricity supply

just a silly question, Capt: so the aircraft is always powered up by the mechanics before the pilots come on board? for each flight?

You can go to the status page and watch the apu spool up. But nothing to monitor
