  • If you use a GPS like the Garmin GTN 650 for IFR, there are a lot of little intricacies to know about which you won't necessarily learn in basic IFR training. Here is a mock IFR cross country flight, showing how to use the GPS for each stage of the flight, from preflight planning through the instrument approach, missed, and hold.

    Another fine presentation. I do think you missed a couple of opportunities. The most important one was discussing why waypoint sequencing was being annunciated "SUSP" even after activating vectors-to-final after the missed. It's important to understand the "why" and what, if anything, one needs to do. This was not mentioned. The second is not using the Fast Find button. When entering SWANN for example, Fast Find had already populated with the closest SWANN without having to worry about another SWANN halfway across the world. You could have saved needless button-pushing. Finally, I would have entered the flight plan in a logical sequence KCGS > SWANN > V268 > LEEAH > KACY. This saves you from having to use Insert Before and go back and activate the KCGS > SWANN leg. More needless button pushes. Overall, nice job. Great cadence. Nice and easy presentation on the eyes. Keep up the good work.

      Thanks for these tips! Just started using the GTN650Xi and these will help. The one that threw me for a loop was why SUSP remained even though VTF was activated. That took me a little while to find the answer to (it's not a problem, but knowing the "why" is nice).

    Love your videos, at around 10:50 you stated consult aim 1-1-19 and I think you we're wanting to refer to 1-1-17 (j). This video pointed me in the right direction to find that information about degrees gps vs actual. I have a local approach and depending on which plane I fly the approach course changes from the gps and wanted to know why haha.
    Many Thanks.

    Thanks for the presentation! I did have a question based on what you said at 10:40, The error of charted heading vs what your GPS is telling you to fly can be found in the AIM 1-1-19 which is GBAS and GLS. Are you trying to refer to 1-1-17 (k) impact of Magnetic Variation on PBN Systems? Maybe I'm not understanding "why" its happening. You say don't get thrown off by this, but alas I'm thrown off. Which do/ should you follow? The charted Magnetic heading or the GPS heading?

    That was awesome. I'm instrument training in the piper pilot 100i and use the G3X and the GNX 375 and it's super cool without the pressure of actually flying to see how it all comes together. One question though, when flying on a Victor Airway and it has multiple fixes over lets say 100 mile straight course, what is the purpose of having all those fixes loaded up it you're just flying straight line to the last fix. I guess I don't understand their value if those fixes are not used for turning somewhere else, but just instead a string of fixes in a straight line.

    I'm surprised the 430s are still supported. I used them 15 years ago as GPS/WAAS was just getting off the ground (bah-dum-bump).
    I can imagine nav dbs are supported but I wonder when the last firmware update was and how long they'll be supported by Garmin.

    It is interesting (and a little confusing) that the inactive (white) routing does NOT update to remove KACY from the sequence when the RNAV approach is added to the flight plan with the SIE transition. It seems to be simple logic to assume you are getting to KACY via the approach.

    A very good video but I am not sure building a plan backwards from the destination is a good idea if more than one airway is to be used, the technique looks like a hangover from using some Garmin marine products that the route has to be built backwards.

    Does it really work? You fly than to the base and turn left to 308!

  • @petermorgan2104
    @petermorgan2104 Рік тому

    Great video. I have a question about vectors to final. If this is active and ATC changes instructions, I believe you are stuck and have to delete plan and re-enter the plan. Is that correct, would it be better to just activate a leg on the final approach

    • @flightinsight9111
      @flightinsight9111  Рік тому +1

      On the 650, you’re not stuck if ATC changes its mind. You can pull up any intermediate points or otherwise. This was fixed from older units like the 430/530, where vectors to final would indeed blow away most waypoints
