As a female myself, when I first started playing drums this was one song I loved to practice to by putting on my parents old record and blasting the volume. At that time I had no idea the drummer was a girl, I was ecstatic when I learned! 💖
Society's expectation at that era was killing the aspirations of many girls and ladie who wanted to play musical instruments that are associated with "only boys play them" stereotype. It took almost 2 decades later to break the stereotype for good during the height of glam rock and new romantics genres.
Honey Lantree has probably been an influence to every female rock and roll drummer since 1964. For this reason alone, she should be in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. By the way, her brother was also in the Honeycombs.
The lead singer den used to still sing in my dads pub with his brother when I was young. And when my father passed he kindly sang his song “when I’m dead and buried” at his funeral. He was a lovely gentleman and their music hugely impacted me. Thank you

When I was in London on a short vacation, I took the 'Rock and Roll' tour to see important locations(Abbey Road, et al). BUT, we also stopped across the street for a short time where Joe Meeks apartment was located and where 'Telstar' was recorded and 'Have I the Right' among many, many other famous recordings. Joe Meeks was a trailblazer in those early times. He did so much with so little equipment. Great to see and hear him mentioned. Well Done.
Top notch episode once again. The Honeycombs had an eerie song called 'Eyes' which features some excellent drumming from Honey, and a typically atmospheric and spooky Joe Meek production. They were both sensational groundbreakers and innovators ❤

@@mikelewis1436 I've since read that the song was inspired by an incident in a gay bar, but it's so ambiguous lyrically that I don't see any possible reason to ban it if you weren't in on the inside story. Famously 'You've Got to Hide Your Love Away' and 'See My Friends' also have apparently homosexual connotations (quite possibly, and kudos to both Lennon and Davies for broadening the pop landscape if that was the case) Yeah, 'Eyes' -- a truly intriguing song. I never knew that it was banned.
Saddened to know that Honey is no longer with us. I still have my original copy of 'Have I The Right' from when it came out - always loved it, and always will. Joe Meek was a genius - I'd love to know what kind of records he would have gone on to make if history had taken a different turn. I'd like to think Honey would have been his go-to drummer!
Great song Have I The Right.. Langtree’s drumming is excellent.. it was one of my favourites as a 14 year old boy, competing with groups like the Beatles, Stones, Kinks & others was no easy task..

The Honeycombs were an important group in the sixties, because of their distinctive sound and of course, the female drummer Honey . The pirate radio stations did the rest. The presenters Brian Matthew and Tony Blackburn still gave/ give the group the attention they deserve.
the blind date singles reviews are great. it's a very fun, breezy bit of light entertainment. but this deeper dive into a topic is more meaty and i really enjoy it. artist profiles, song and album discussions, cultural trends, and bits of pop music historic events are the videos where i think the work really shines. as for honey lantree...great player in a great band. unique sound with great songs: hits and deep cuts are all really nice listening.
I read that the "Honey" was named after drummer Honey Lantree and the "combs" came from her previous job as a hairdresser. I always loved that song and was quite impressed with their sound (the Joe Meek effect). They had some great songs like "Love in Tokyo" and "Colour Slide," among others. Shame they didn't have the success they deserved.
Read that many times too but it's refuted by Honeycombs' founder Martin Murray, who said it was chosen because it was something sweet, like the band, and nothing to do with hairdressing/combs.

The 45 must sound striking at stun levels on a good playback system. She seemed like a lovely girl and I hope she has a good next life, which she most probably will. Thanks, Willie. I wish I had a 45 of "Have I the Right". I agree, it probaby sounds killer. I've got a few 45s from the early 60s and they sound amazing. After all, all those songs were equalized, mixed and mastered with 45s in mind.
@@YesterdaysPapers Oh yeah, those old 45's sound great. First, all analog. And from what I've read, all things being equal, the same song at 45 will sound better than at 33 1/3. Of course, just how much better is in the ears of the listener. I have a couple of classic jazz albums, originally on 33 of course, released as 2 45's on an audiophile label. They do sound terrific. Only drawback is you have to change the record 4 times and that sort of interrupts the flow.

Thanks for featuring them and Honey Lantree.This led me to think of vocalist Beverley Kutner (later Martyn) who was drawing a lot of interest in 1966-67 London and was on the radar of many very well known musicians at the time. She was about Honey's age and recorded singles but never quite achieved the acclaim she seemed to be heading for. I would love to hear more about her story, if you think there would be enough interest in her story. Thanks again !

Being a drum teacher, I see very talented female drummers. Most of the time they stop playing drums, because life is more than drumming. In society, in a lot of societies, even in 2022, they seem to have more obligations and responsibilities than most men. As a matter of fact, I know many male drummers, who are only capable of playing drums, because their girlfriend or wife decides to do what has to be done in daily life, and what is in many points of view more important and difficult, so the guy can make time for drumming. The bottomline is this; it's a cultural thing. It has absolutely nothing to do with talent. Or maybe the lack of talent of someone for something, and the fact someone gives up her own dream for other dreams, for the sake of a relation, real love and real life. As a token of respect.
When I was a small child with a transistor radio I'd hear this song and bang on boxes, pots and pans, what have you. I had no idea that the drummer for the Honeycombs was a woman but this former little girl just wanted to play percussion. I took up drums and percussion instruments later on and even played a few pro gigs. Thanks, Honey!
Thank you for a great story. Honey was obviously criminally underrated at the time. Especially since it was her playing that made "Have I the Right" such a catchy tune -- and judging from the other songs, that goes for the Honeycombs' entire catalogue.
I love 'Have I the Right'! Also 'Johnny Remember Me' and 'Telstar' (Joe Meek's other #1). My other favourite Honeycombs song is 'This Too Shall Pass Away'. During a UK vacation, recalling the liner notes on the Honeycombs' LP, I dropped in for a drink at the Mild May tavern! No groups playing (only an iffy jukebox), but there was footie on the telly. Someone told me the Zombies were discovered there too ...
American all female band Goldie and the Gingerbreads formed in 1962 and were signed by Decca in 1963. They toured the UK on the same bill as the Beatles, Kinks, Hollies,Stones. The singer went on to become rocker Genya Ravan of Ten Wheel Drive and solo fame. The drummer Ginger Bianco formed the all female jazz fusion band Isis in the early 1970's.
Goldie Zelkowitz… Genya’s real name Was big Band Drummer Les DeMerle’s girlfriend for several years! And now you know the rest of the story! In fact that Zildjian cymbal medallion you see Genya wearing On the front cover of the 10 Wheel Dr. album was a gift to her from Les who got it from the ZILDJIAN factory! They were promotional mini cymbal necklaces That were issued as part of a promotion for the Buddy Rich band of the late 60s! Les had a few I even had one but it got stolen they were very cool I wish ZILDJIAN would re-issue them but look at the cover of the 10 Wheel Dr. album the self titled album and she’s wearing a little round medallion looking thing that’s a Zildjian cymbal medallion she got from her thenboyfriend Les De Merle! In fact I remember Les telling me that he introduced her to some of those guys who would become 10 Wheel Dr.!
Both Honey Langtree and Denis D’Ell the lead singer we’re hair dressers in London. Hence the name of the band The Honeycombs! Honey’s birth name was Ann Margot Lantree.

Excellent vid! The more I learn about The Honeycombs, the more intrigued I am by them. Honey was certainly a pioneer; the only other female drummers I can think of are Karen Carpenter and the drummer for the Bangles. Their whole interaction with independent producer Joe Meek would make for a fascinating biopic!

From what I have seen and read up on Honey Lantree she carried herself well despite what had been said about her at the time in the press. Does anyone remember the record shop next to Tooting Broadway underground station? A young lady working there gave me the record Have i The Right. The record has a date on it - 10th August 1964. Still got it and played it just now. Thank you for showing this and a big thank you to the girl who gave me such a great record.

What a fascinating story. I only just discovered her and this group today when it popped in my recommended list. I was stunned to see a female drummer so I am not surprised to learn about the criticism she received. However, she seemed competent and comfortable, and her drumming sounds great to me. It's pretty interesting to learn that her parents fully supported her choice too. No doubt that meant a lot to her. The group's song, "Eyes" is fantastic.
Great video , It goes to show you how rough it was to be independent not just Joe Meek but his bands. When you go up against the music industry machine and start becoming successful you either have to join them or be left out in the cold , in their case I suspect the major labels colluded against Meek when it came to distribution and other devious things , he's not the only one , there were a few that went through the same abuse as independent record people , Sam Cooke , Lloyd Price in the US , and lesser know record lable musician people.
Hard to say. There were always some very rough people in the music business, as Bobby Fuller found out when he tried to break off a deal with an LA club and as Tommy James had to face when he realized that he was owned by the mob. But was there anyone of that ilk who considered Meek important enough to sabotage? He was a genius, but a paranoid one, who, upon meeting Phil Spector, immediately accused him of wanting to steal Meek's secrets. This was, after all, a guy who shot his landlady over something she might have seen in an appointment book. Then again, as the saying goes, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.
@@pcno2832 Yeah , Meek went overboard with people but everybody has a dark side especially muscians. In the late and early 50s , Meek was a threat to the majors in England because his songs kept charting high and they did'nt like that. They either usually buy you out or do some nasty things. As a rule , no business man would invest in entertainment or music because there is too much risk. So the mob would come in and do it out of ego thing than making money. They were all runned by the the mob. The only diffrence between major and independent label is that the majors were runned by hi profile mob or elite like EMI , Decca etc. The stock holders were just as shady and had their own agenda just like today , nothing has change , ha ha.
Times have certainly changed for the better since the 60s. I've been in a band with a female drummer. Thankfully, nobody gave it a thought. Man or woman, the only thing that should matter is whether or not you have the chops to play well!

I was about 13 at the time (maybe 1966)and I remember going to a school in Hampstead where the Honeycombs were playing.It was a long time ago,but I still remember after all these years.
Very true, Brian, but the Carpenters were also dismissed and ridiculed by some DJ's back in the day. Too corny and too saccharine were some of the adjectives used to denigrate them.
You can tell by watching their live performances that she has a sort of schoolmarm sway over the rest of the band. When the interviewer asks what it's like being surrounded by four men... "Oh they're alright. I look out for them. I do their hair, make them tea..." Badass drummer, too.
I know their hit song from hearing it on the oldies station here in New York. I barely remember it in 64 and never heard of this person. So this is a very interesting tidbit from the past. I'm sure the Velvet Undergrounds drummer who was female has heard of her. The Underground became known around 66 in New York.

They played live on Sunday night at the London Palladium. Honey was ill and Viv Prince of The Pretty Things stood in for her. He was a great drummer but was entirely the opposite of Honey as far as neat and tidy is concerned!! Look him up on Wikipedia
She’s such an icon, there’s always been something about a lone woman in a band made up of men that’s always been so legendary to me. I’ve been working in the entertainment industry since 2017, doing everything from broadcasting , to office work, to P.A work, to eventually performing, and it is still a fairly male led industry, but I love what I do, and I always think of female icons like Honey Lantree, like Doreen Shaffer from the Skatalites, and even Amy Winehouse with her band ❤️
Grace Slick comes to mind when thinking of bands with only one female (especially a 60s band). With Great Society and Jefferson Airplane. The Airplane went gold with their debut LP with their first female lead singer Signe Toly Anderson. When Anderson dropped out to raise her newborn, Slick joined the Airplane and brought their two biggest hits "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love" onto their next album, Surrealistic Pillow. Slick not only sang lead on some of the songs but played the recorder and piano.
This was the first single that I ever bought. I knew they had a female drummer, which was different, but I think it was the production which drew me. I certainly didn’t know about Joe Meek at the time. The BBC made a film about Meek a few years ago, showing how he produced records, and it showed how he made Have I the Right, amongst others. Anyone who’s interested should look the film out, it’s well worth a watch. Telstar: The Joe Meek Story with Con O’Neill as Meek. It was released in 2008.

My father used to play iin bands during the 1960s in the South Wales area /UK . When the Honeycombes charted, my father's band featured the song in their gig with the drummer wearing a wig that resembed Honey's hairstyle - and it went down very well. Everyone I knew loved Honey - a joy to see in the group and to hear playing her drums . ( & if she had actually been a poor drummer my father would have most certainly commented on it ! )
Im a lady (fixing to be 73) and spent my life wishing I could have been a drunmer! I tried taking lessons but seemed expensive lessons and the instrument itself. I dont know why but when I first saw the Beatles Ringo quickly became my favorite because of him being a drummer. Way to go Honey Lantree!

Remember her well , a great talent, loved the songs , have I the right , and that's the way, brings back so many great memories, Joe meek was exceptional talent too, I met the backer , of his , the colonel they called him , about , maybe 30 years ago , we would talk , because he caught me singing , once , perhaps a shadow of his former self ,, , met the other group which is not mentioned here the tornadoes , the group which had the hit Telstar, by Joe meek , the tornadoes were bully Fury's, main backing group at one stage , great talents , all of them , I used to sing many songs , covers , even Johnny Leyton's , Johnny remember me , too as well as all billy Fury's songs , loved singing , what an inspiration , all these people were, in England's history of pop music .

What a cool lady! I must have heard "Have I the Right" when I was a little kid but then forgot about it and when I heard it as an adult I had a moment of real intense flashback of emotions and it was kind of overwhelming. I still love listening to it now
"Have I the Right" was composed by Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley, the duo that wrote numerous hits, mostly for Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich. I thought "That Loving Feeling" by the New Honeycombs was a great song with an interesting vocal and instrumental arrangement, and most likely the last produced by Joe Meek. Sylvia Saunders from the girl group the Liverbirds predated Honey Lantree as a girl drummer.
I was in a band myself at the time and this Joe Meek production which, with tempo alterations and the like, was one of the first big hits I remember which could not be performed properly on stage because Dennis could not match the speeded-up vinyl version - the thinnest edge of the 60s tech wedge which eventually drove bands like the Beatles off the live stage as recordings became as much tech-driven as talent-driven.

"Eyes" is a great song indeed. It was actually banned by the BBC at the time, don't really know why.
@@YesterdaysPapers It's a creepy song. But then again, the BBC tended to ban things at the drop of a hat. They must have been some seriously uptight people at that establishment at the time. @@mikelewis1436 I've since read that the song was inspired by an incident in a gay bar, but it's so ambiguous lyrically that I don't see any possible reason to ban it if you weren't in on the inside story. Famously 'You've Got to Hide Your Love Away' and 'See My Friends' also have apparently homosexual connotations (quite possibly, and kudos to both Lennon and Davies for broadening the pop landscape if that was the case) Yeah, 'Eyes' -- a truly intriguing song. I never knew that it was banned.

Saddened to know that Honey is no longer with us. I still have my original copy of 'Have I The Right' from when it came out - always loved it, and always will. Joe Meek was a genius - I'd love to know what kind of records he would have gone on to make if history had taken a different turn. I'd like to think Honey would have been his go-to drummer!
Great song Have I The Right.. Langtree’s drumming is excellent.. it was one of my favourites as a 14 year old boy, competing with groups like the Beatles, Stones, Kinks & others was no easy task..

The Honeycombs were an important group in the sixties, because of their distinctive sound and of course, the female drummer Honey . The pirate radio stations did the rest. The presenters Brian Matthew and Tony Blackburn still gave/ give the group the attention they deserve.
I loved this! I wish they would have had more hits, it sucks how critical the press was in those days
the blind date singles reviews are great. it's a very fun, breezy bit of light entertainment. but this deeper dive into a topic is more meaty and i really enjoy it. artist profiles, song and album discussions, cultural trends, and bits of pop music historic events are the videos where i think the work really shines. as for honey lantree...great player in a great band. unique sound with great songs: hits and deep cuts are all really nice listening.

I read that the "Honey" was named after drummer Honey Lantree and the "combs" came from her previous job as a hairdresser. I always loved that song and was quite impressed with their sound (the Joe Meek effect). They had some great songs like "Love in Tokyo" and "Colour Slide," among others. Shame they didn't have the success they deserved.
Read that many times too but it's refuted by Honeycombs' founder Martin Murray, who said it was chosen because it was something sweet, like the band, and nothing to do with hairdressing/combs.
Regardless of what is reported...The Honeycombs was so named using the name of their drummer; Miss Honey Lantree & her profession...at the time she joined the band...of a hair-dresser.

Honey Lantree's drumming on "Have I the Right?" was the first thing to really grab my attention when I first heard the song (which I liked). And suddenly, it now dawns upon me that the band's name may have been a play on words based on her name?
Martin Murray (rhythm guitar), who started the band, was a hairdresser and she was his assistant. They were "honey combs", so they went with the joke.
Let that lady rock and roll! Never heard her singing before. That was nice.
Fast-forward to now and there's about 5 female drummers on YT I'm subscribed to that will have a career after YT, playing live gigs for LIFE!! God save all female drummers, God save the Queen! 👑

The 45 must sound striking at stun levels on a good playback system. She seemed like a lovely girl and I hope she has a good next life, which she most probably will. Thanks, Willie. I wish I had a 45 of "Have I the Right". I agree, it probaby sounds killer. I've got a few 45s from the early 60s and they sound amazing. After all, all those songs were equalized, mixed and mastered with 45s in mind.
@@YesterdaysPapers Oh yeah, those old 45's sound great. First, all analog. And from what I've read, all things being equal, the same song at 45 will sound better than at 33 1/3. Of course, just how much better is in the ears of the listener. I have a couple of classic jazz albums, originally on 33 of course, released as 2 45's on an audiophile label. They do sound terrific. Only drawback is you have to change the record 4 times and that sort of interrupts the flow.

Thanks for featuring them and Honey Lantree.This led me to think of vocalist Beverley Kutner (later Martyn) who was drawing a lot of interest in 1966-67 London and was on the radar of many very well known musicians at the time. She was about Honey's age and recorded singles but never quite achieved the acclaim she seemed to be heading for. I would love to hear more about her story, if you think there would be enough interest in her story. Thanks again !

Being a drum teacher, I see very talented female drummers. Most of the time they stop playing drums, because life is more than drumming. In society, in a lot of societies, even in 2022, they seem to have more obligations and responsibilities than most men. As a matter of fact, I know many male drummers, who are only capable of playing drums, because their girlfriend or wife decides to do what has to be done in daily life, and what is in many points of view more important and difficult, so the guy can make time for drumming. The bottomline is this; it's a cultural thing. It has absolutely nothing to do with talent. Or maybe the lack of talent of someone for something, and the fact someone gives up her own dream for other dreams, for the sake of a relation, real love and real life. As a token of respect.
When I was a small child with a transistor radio I'd hear this song and bang on boxes, pots and pans, what have you. I had no idea that the drummer for the Honeycombs was a woman but this former little girl just wanted to play percussion. I took up drums and percussion instruments later on and even played a few pro gigs. Thanks, Honey!

Thank you for a great story. Honey was obviously criminally underrated at the time. Especially since it was her playing that made "Have I the Right" such a catchy tune -- and judging from the other songs, that goes for the Honeycombs' entire catalogue.
I love 'Have I the Right'! Also 'Johnny Remember Me' and 'Telstar' (Joe Meek's other #1).

American all female band Goldie and the Gingerbreads formed in 1962 and were signed by Decca in 1963. They toured the UK on the same bill as the Beatles, Kinks, Hollies,Stones. The singer went on to become rocker Genya Ravan of Ten Wheel Drive and solo fame. The drummer Ginger Bianco formed the all female jazz fusion band Isis in the early 1970's.

That were issued as part of a promotion for the Buddy Rich band of the late 60s!
Les had a few I even had one but it got stolen they were very cool I wish ZILDJIAN would re-issue them but look at the cover of the 10 Wheel Dr. album the self titled album and she’s wearing a little round medallion looking thing that’s a Zildjian cymbal medallion she got from her thenboyfriend Les De Merle!
In fact I remember Les telling me that he introduced her to some of those guys who would become 10 Wheel Dr.!

Excellent vid! The more I learn about The Honeycombs, the more intrigued I am by them. Honey was certainly a pioneer; the only other female drummers I can think of are Karen Carpenter and the drummer for the Bangles. Their whole interaction with independent producer Joe Meek would make for a fascinating biopic!
The Liver Birds were a lesser-known all-female Merseybeat group, including drummer. There are a few videos of them on youtube.

From what I have seen and read up on Honey Lantree she carried herself well despite what had been said about her at the time in the press. Does anyone remember the record shop next to Tooting Broadway underground station? A young lady working there gave me the record Have i The Right. The record has a date on it - 10th August 1964. Still got it and played it just now. Thank you for showing this and a big thank you to the girl who gave me such a great record.

What a fascinating story. I only just discovered her and this group today when it popped in my recommended list. I was stunned to see a female drummer so I am not surprised to learn about the criticism she received. However, she seemed competent and comfortable, and her drumming sounds great to me. It's pretty interesting to learn that her parents fully supported her choice too. No doubt that meant a lot to her. The group's song, "Eyes" is fantastic.

Great video , It goes to show you how rough it was to be independent not just Joe Meek but his bands. When you go up against the music industry machine and start becoming successful you either have to join them or be left out in the cold , in their case I suspect the major labels colluded against Meek when it came to distribution and other devious things , he's not the only one , there were a few that went through the same abuse as independent record people , Sam Cooke , Lloyd Price in the US , and lesser know record lable musician people.
Hard to say. There were always some very rough people in the music business, as Bobby Fuller found out when he tried to break off a deal with an LA club and as Tommy James had to face when he realized that he was owned by the mob. But was there anyone of that ilk who considered Meek important enough to sabotage? He was a genius, but a paranoid one, who, upon meeting Phil Spector, immediately accused him of wanting to steal Meek's secrets. This was, after all, a guy who shot his landlady over something she might have seen in an appointment book. Then again, as the saying goes, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.
@@pcno2832 Yeah , Meek went overboard with people but everybody has a dark side especially muscians. In the late and early 50s , Meek was a threat to the majors in England because his songs kept charting high and they did'nt like that. They either usually buy you out or do some nasty things. As a rule , no business man would invest in entertainment or music because there is too much risk. So the mob would come in and do it out of ego thing than making money. They were all runned by the the mob. The only diffrence between major and independent label is that the majors were runned by hi profile mob or elite like EMI , Decca etc. The stock holders were just as shady and had their own agenda just like today , nothing has change , ha ha.

Times have certainly changed for the better since the 60s. I've been in a band with a female drummer. Thankfully, nobody gave it a thought. Man or woman, the only thing that should matter is whether or not you have the chops to play well!

I was about 13 at the time (maybe 1966)and I remember going to a school in Hampstead where the Honeycombs were playing.It was a long time ago,but I still remember after all these years.
The group name and song name rang no bells, but once I listened to it, I remember hearing it back in the day. I just never knew the names. Very cool.

You can tell by watching their live performances that she has a sort of schoolmarm sway over the rest of the band. When the interviewer asks what it's like being surrounded by four men... "Oh they're alright. I look out for them. I do their hair, make them tea..." Badass drummer, too.
Interviews with Joe Meek must be tough to find.
I know their hit song from hearing it on the oldies station here in New York. I barely remember it in 64 and never heard of this person. So this is a very interesting tidbit from the past. I'm sure the Velvet Undergrounds drummer who was female has heard of her. The Underground became known around 66 in New York.
Honeycombs songwriting vehicle for Howard Blaikley :) I can never find one clip of them actually playing live, but I love the sound of the Honeycombs and Joe Meek !! :) We knew some of these groups of Meek's well in Canada as we got some unique pressings here and they got radio airplay to this very day .. heard Honeycombs on a local AM station the other day :)
There's a clip of them playing "Have I the Right" live in the studio. It sounds weird without Meek's reverb and echo but they sounded alright.

They played live on Sunday night at the London Palladium. Honey was ill and Viv Prince of The Pretty Things stood in for her. He was a great drummer but was entirely the opposite of Honey as far as neat and tidy is concerned!! Look him up on Wikipedia
She’s such an icon, there’s always been something about a lone woman in a band made up of men that’s always been so legendary to me. I’ve been working in the entertainment industry since 2017, doing everything from broadcasting , to office work, to P.A work, to eventually performing, and it is still a fairly male led industry, but I love what I do, and I always think of female icons like Honey Lantree, like Doreen Shaffer from the Skatalites, and even Amy Winehouse with her band ❤️
Grace Slick comes to mind when thinking of bands with only one female (especially a 60s band). With Great Society and Jefferson Airplane. The Airplane went gold with their debut LP with their first female lead singer Signe Toly Anderson. When Anderson dropped out to raise her newborn, Slick joined the Airplane and brought their two biggest hits "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love" onto their next album, Surrealistic Pillow. Slick not only sang lead on some of the songs but played the recorder and piano.
This was the first single that I ever bought. I knew they had a female drummer, which was different, but I think it was the production which drew me. I certainly didn’t know about Joe Meek at the time. The BBC made a film about Meek a few years ago, showing how he produced records, and it showed how he made Have I the Right, amongst others. Anyone who’s interested should look the film out, it’s well worth a watch. Telstar: The Joe Meek Story with Con O’Neill as Meek. It was released in 2008.

I’m sure it did receive a cinema release, too, as many BBC funded films do. What’s the documentary that you refer to, called?
My father used to play iin bands during the 1960s in the South Wales area /UK . When the Honeycombes charted, my father's band featured the song in their gig with the drummer wearing a wig that resembed Honey's hairstyle - and it went down very well. Everyone I knew loved Honey - a joy to see in the group and to hear playing her drums . ( & if she had actually been a poor drummer my father would have most certainly commented on it ! )

Im a lady (fixing to be 73) and spent my life wishing I could have been a drunmer! I tried taking lessons but seemed expensive lessons and the instrument itself. I dont know why but when I first saw the Beatles Ringo quickly became my favorite because of him being a drummer. Way to go Honey Lantree!

Remember her well , a great talent, loved the songs , have I the right , and that's the way, brings back so many great memories, Joe meek was exceptional talent too, I met the backer , of his , the colonel they called him , about , maybe 30 years ago , we would talk , because he caught me singing , once , perhaps a shadow of his former self ,, , met the other group which is not mentioned here the tornadoes , the group which had the hit Telstar, by Joe meek , the tornadoes were bully Fury's, main backing group at one stage , great talents , all of them , I used to sing many songs , covers , even Johnny Leyton's , Johnny remember me , too as well as all billy Fury's songs , loved singing , what an inspiration , all these people were, in England's history of pop music .

A great video. Honey was a trail blazer and it was wonderful that she had the support of her family. Growing up in those times it was so rare to see women doing anything interesting or exciting, I remember well how excluded I felt. "Have I the Right" was composed by Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley, the duo that wrote numerous hits, mostly for Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich.
I thought "That Loving Feeling" by the New Honeycombs was a great song with an interesting vocal and instrumental arrangement, and most likely the last produced by Joe Meek.
Sylvia Saunders from the girl group the Liverbirds predated Honey Lantree as a girl drummer.
I was in a band myself at the time and this Joe Meek production which, with tempo alterations and the like, was one of the first big hits I remember which could not be performed properly on stage because Dennis could not match the speeded-up vinyl version - the thinnest edge of the 60s tech wedge which eventually drove bands like the Beatles off the live stage as recordings became as much tech-driven as talent-driven.
