- Action from this unique one-make race, held as a support event for the 1985 European Grand Prix at Brands Hatch. The Motoring News Celebrity Race pitched rally drivers against rallycross drivers, all in identical Ford Escort XR3is. It is posted here as a matter of record and because it features many recognised rally stars of the time, including Pentti Airikkala, Jimmy McRae and Russell Brookes.

was F1 or club racing what mattered was the passion for racing
Dickie Davis the introducer I believe. Yes, defo. World of Sport on ITV Saturday afternoon. Murray Walker just moved to them from the BBC, mainly to do Formula One Grand Prix's.
Des Lynam is the introducer. It's BBC Grandstand. Murray didn't move to ITV until that station started broadcasting F1 in 1997.

Fantastic stuff! Mark Rennison could drive an XR3i just as well as he drove his RS200. I think I enjoyed Murray's commentaries outside of F1 even more than his Grand Prix ones.

Brilliant! What a lineup. Pity Roger Clark wasn't there. Or Timo Makinen - he won the RAC Rally three times on the trot in a MK1 Escort, 1971-73 I think it was. EDIT: 1973-75 it was, first two in a MK1 RS1600, 1975 in the new Mk2 RS1800. But this is 1985 I know, but above two were still active then.

He was hilarious commentating rallycross in the 1970s, always doing cock-ups and getting wrong. Saying things like the leader, 'He has got everything under control', then he slams right into a mudbank. Hilarious. 🙂

That's the one! 'See how they have cut outs on the windscreens, it is to help them see', and then the driver disappears into the scenery. 😁😁😁

Mark Rennison winner, perfect racing lines. Pity about using standard road tyres, noisy. With 115bhp, just keep the foot flat on the floor and do left foot braking around the corners, crash change the gears, it's not your car! That Shell Oils corner, always go wide on it over it with these type of cars, the grip there is phenomenal. And keep slightly off the racing line in places, bit greasy. Enjoyed. 👍
I agree, but I'm not sure for the 115 bhp. It seems to be some XR3 or XR3i, and not RS1600i. And what about engine preparation on these cars? Have you got informations about this championship?
How on gods earth did Murray know who was who? They all white except for the odd red cars and the numbers are barely legible 90% of the time!
