Love the tympani&bells/horn players!!! Such a cool combo and CC got gypped that year on percussion. So good! F those judges!
That tenorline and bassline were easily the best in DCI that year.

Except for Bloo, BD, Cadets, and SCV for sure.
Talked to a Vic Firth rep at TBA (Texas Bandmasters convention) he said they changed the pigment and texture so that the stick will absorb sweat and not slip out of the hand.
The percussion section should have gotten some thing better than 6th place. This is one of the best sections I have ever seen.
The quads are using rougher-grain white MTS1s because the original finish & paint was slippery.

Did the Vic Firth MTS1 tenor sticks change from that canary like color to white? I really can't tell. But If they did, I really the like change!!

I agree, I think.
I'd also press to argue that their books lack a certain amount of maturity. It feels like the drumline isn't an independent section but an accompaniment to the hornline, which while in essence should be a component of the drumline, stands out more than anything else. thus it feels like they're just there to build the hornline's pedestal.
I think this goes back to what you're saying about identity. The books just don't feel musical or mature in this regard.

haha the poor horn players on timpani look so awkward. I wonder if they brought the percussion score down any cuz those judges would be merciless on poor attacks
when i make that comment, I don't want to undermine what they do. They play them pretty cleanly and that's not a run that would be -that- easy to clean, but...it's just kind of dry, especially considering that they are on 2 for the entire movement.

I'm a huge Crown fan, but their drumline consistently underperforms. In my opinion, it's simply a lack of identity.
The lines they're essentially competing with have all tailored a style that is unique to them, and that distinctiveness acts as a conduit for their respective success (and appeal to talented young players).
I just don't get that from Crown's drumline, which is a shame because the hornline definitely has it.
These guys play their book quite well, and I'm not someone who's in much a position to look down on members of drumcorps, but I do kind of think he's right...
i wouldn't say cringe-worthy. But it is worth noting that the notes crown play in their percussion are...a touch underwhelming. especially pit. you'd need stamina to play those runs but that's really about it...

Take all the thumb down comments you have received for this post as a compliment. I would. It IS a high schoolish book. I have seen elsewhere other people saying that Hannum's parts are extremely complex. There is s word for those people and that word is idiot. SCV is complex. BD is complex. Cadets this year were insane. Crown . . . is just meh.
