Thanks you do great work ,it would be great to see more abandoned lines even with the rails gone. Your filming is so good I feel myself on the train back in time. Many thanks.
B4 the mine at Ohai closed I stocked up and still have two years' worth for my coal range in winter. Still pause when driving to Otautau from Tuatapere at the crossing in hope of a passing train. Not abandoned just out of commission for three years. An incident in Ukraine or Iran will make it economic again.
Something seriously wrong with this footage. When was this shoot? The track looks WAY too good for an abandoned rail line. After the 12min mark, maybe. And yes, I can see places you filmed in both directions by the NC coal loading area. Helps when I live in nightcaps. 😂👍
OK, I’ve re watched the clip can identify 90% of the track. We haven’t had a coal trains here in a year after a storm buggered a bridge near Thornbury. You should go for a wander through what remains of the Wairio depot. Some interesting relics there. 👍
Restore The line from Thornbury to Pukemaori, then extend to Ohai for excursions. Or electrify and increase the speed so that Western Southland becomes a suburb of Invercargill same with the MSL to Edendale (or Gore) including the Wyndham branch. Let's not leave out the Kingston branch, though commuter to Lumsden and a worthwhile Kingston Flyer from there. Branch of at Clifden or Eastern Bush and aim for Manapouri and Te Anau returning via Mossburn. Now for some ideas that'll cause enough people to move in to make the venture worthwhile. Edit: cycle track would be a handy complement and worthwhile use in the meantime.
love the sound effects ;-)

Nice drone work 'cept for the derailment...
fairly crispy morning down there.
Great flight, great foto.
Great Video Geoff, thanks for sharing
My mother lived in both those towns as a young girl back in the 1940's

Reinstate the railways. I know it was just for coal but we shouldn't lose it. Rail has future potential. Not just for cyclists.
We carted 30,000 ton of logs from there and all on trucks. Cheaper.
Line has not been used for a long time, did not a know a train could jump over a 4WD sitting on the line 🤣only joking🤣

Ohai and Nightcaps are Southland Iconic locations. Cheers for this
I think of all the work that went I to those lines, it's a shame. That's Nz it seems🌿
What is the distance from start to finish.
Why so many abandoned railway lines in NZ?😢
Rip the rail line up and use it for a cycle track
