Creamy Cod & Potato Gratin - Food Wishes

- Creamed cod was one of my favorite childhood comfort foods, mostly because my mother served it over mashed potatoes, which was my favorite childhood food of any type. This version is a little fancier than my mom’s, but still very easy, and can be done in individual portions, or in one large casserole dish. Enjoy!

My eight year old has a hard time sleeping unless I put on Chef John for her. She says his voice just helps. And she loves cod and is wild about potatoes, so it all works out, which is nice.
That's so wonderful
Wholesome overload
She has great taste!! 👏🏼🙌🏼
Right, he could be the Morgan Freeman of reading children's stories
We put on Chef John when our dog is crated to keep her calm.
"And if you want severe burns on your tongue, go ahead and dig right in."
Chef John's been making me laugh for well over a decade now. I love this guy.
LMAO
haha yeah i get it it’s cuz it’s hot and it would burn your mouth ROFLMAO
This line cracks me up 😅 That's what I love about Chef John. He will be going along with his recipe and then throws in a funny line when you least expect it. He is so funny 🤣
I like to talk to myself in my "Chef John" voice when I'm cooking. Inflections and all.
"and THAT'S it, my PB&J is done and ready to enjoy!" *takes a bite*
Me too!
Me three 😊
When I'm cooking, my kids sometimes ask me if I'm doing the ooold tapa-tapa or the ooold poka-poka.

Made it today with cauliflower mush. It was so delicious, so creamy with lots of flavors, like at top notch restaurant. My husband immediately after finishing his, asked if we have more, and after finishing added: “it is one of the best fish dishes I ever had”.
Thank you chef John, all dishes that I made from your channel were outstanding.
Oh my, what an incredible comfort food. The fresh tarragon with the lemon zest and the touch of cayenne pepper is a heavenly combination. This is delicious.
My 14 year old son and I made this tonight for the family. What a great dish. Thanks for sharing Chef John
Cod is my favorite fish, and I’m always looking for recipes with cod that aren’t fried or battered. I made this tonight (dill replacing tarragon, and adding black pepper), and it wasn’t just the best cod recipe I’ve made, it was one of the best meals I’ve ever made (and I’ve been cooking for more than 50 years). I served it with some fresh homemade coleslaw (cabbage, carrots, diced apples), and peas. 10 stars. My husband literally licked his plate clean. LOL
I’ve made this twice now. It’s superb, it’s easy, and it’s the tarragon that pulls it all together. A simple green salad and it’s a complete meal. You can’t go wrong.
Modestly presented as ever, you NEVER brag John.
When watching a Chef John video, if/when you hear him say, "after all, you are"... get ready to chuckle.
Like all of Chef John's recipes, this one looks awesome and I'll definitely give it a try.
When I first saw this, I was not stoked at all. By the end, I'm craving it and planning my grocery order. That's Chef John for you.
The effect of Chef John is strong!! 👏🏼🤭🙌🏼
Have you tried it yet?? My husband made it tonight and it's SOOOOOOOOOO YUMMY!!!
A new video from chef John is like a little oasis of calm amid all the turmoil we're currently caught up in.
GOD yes!
Wait, the sauce is white. Does that mean it's racist?
Haha! That depends on whether or not you're batshit insane.
You’re making 2021 better already!
I've just made one with prawns, absolutely delicious. Thank you Chef John
Hmmm. Good substitute!
"We just want potato and butter" is now needed on a shirt.
I bring nothing relevant, just wanted to comment.
Print now then SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!! :D
I just made this tonight. Delicious! My husband brought a bunch of fish home from a trip to Alaska so I'm always looking for new recipes. I used rockfish instead of cod because that is what I had. My husband says I need to make this again. 😊
This sort of reminds me of an Icelandic dish we call "plokkfiskur"...roughly translated it means "picked fish". We traditionally use leftover white fish (usually cod, otherwise haddock) and potatoes, along with some onions and seasoning in a roux. Often you take the finished product, put it in a dish and add cheese on top (gouda is the most used and widely available in Iceland) and broil for a couple of minutes 😋
Try it with some raw cheese if you can get it, much healthier then Gouda. Even dutch people prefer other cheeses then Gouda 😂
@@theyarnycaterpillar3563 gouda is basically the only cheese you can get here that doesn't leave you bankrupt
@@Liliththelizard Honestly if you look into how healthy raw cheese is for you immuunsystem, your body will thank you for investing in your health. Since healtgcare is very expensive...
I love Chef John AND I love seeing this kind of response, because it takes me to places I've never been and sadly probably never will be. I am just now planning on my version tonight - I'll be adding prawns (shrimp?!), because I'm Aussie and what to do with these leftover prawns I bought! ;)
Your Icelandic dish is what we call Fish Pie in uk. We may add other ingredients like prawns and salmon along with the cod/haddock.
You are, after all, the Chef John of your Cod Gratin!
Just made this and am stuffing my face with it(after it slightly cooled haha) as I type. Couldn't wait to RAVE about this delicious dish. Thank you so much Chef John! I'm already thinking of making it again next week ASAP. Just absolutely delicious!

Yummm, this sounds so good. I’m obsessed with Norwegian fiskesuppe (you must use Atlantic cod) so I think I’d love this. I couldn’t resist adding some dill here...
I'm making this, tonight. Thank you, for making wonderful recipes that non-chefs can make! I made it that night! It truly tasted like a restaurant-quality meal. My family flipped for it! I have to be careful not to make it too often. 🎣
Love the way you find some humor while teaching us a new recipe. Looks great, and I can't wait to give it a try. Thank you!
I LOVE the way he is now presenting the ingredients first like that. Great idea!
This combo initially sounded odd to me, but boy o boy does it look uber delish🤤
Typically 'Cod au Gratin' is simply cod in an herbal or cheesy cream sauce with a crisp bread crumb topping.
@@KPA78 thank u for clarification, the fish & mashed potatoes seemed awkward like Arnold & Danny in the movie Twins
@@peytonpendleton2343 thats a deep cut
Maybe I’m following the seafood pastas’ norm, but shouldn’t you avoid putting cheese on seafood? I’m just curious.
@@theviewer102I thought that myself until I realized I've been watching too much food Network. There's a lot of fish and seafood recipes with cheese that are amazing.
Chef John I made this for supper. Absolutely amazing combination. As you mentioned best potatoes ever!
Perfect! This will be a weekend dinner. Thank you Chef John.
This is so good I had to go out and buy more cod and make it again.
JUST WOW 💥
I scrolled pass this video description, but decided to give it a chance because...it IS Chef John and he makes everything sound and look delicious. 😋
I’ll put this dish on my favorite list! 😍😍 made this today! Very easy and full of flavors!
Just add this recipe. Rich and decadent. This recipe is a definite keeper. Highly recommended.
Just when you thought au gratin couldn’t get any better!
Needs bacon.
And to be served in a cowbell.
The master is here, thanks for sharing, hope some day I will too ❤🙏❤
You will 💪🏾💪🏾
Creamed Cod (with hard boiled eggs and sun-dried tomatoes) is a traditional family recipe that I had forgotten about. Chef John...you have inspired me to dig out my grandmother's old box of recipies and rekindle an old favorite. Thanks!
Always move and edifying you watch a gourmet in his kitchen. Nice recipe. Thanks
Made this yesterday with cod it was delicious!!! Even better today as well thanks for the recipe!!
Thank you so much, my dad and i are loving your recipes :)
Classic combo of potatoes and cod presented with new twist.
I made this exactly according to the recipe (with dill since I couldn't get any tarragon) and it was excellent. Since I needed a first course today and had some cod left I made it again, but replaced the lemon with a 1/4 cup dry sauvignon blanc and a teaspoon of fine Dijon mustard. I put a big tablespoon of the potato/butter mix in each of 4" ramekins, added about 1 oz. of cod and some thin sauce, then spooned on the reduced sauce and added a nice layer of Parmesan. The dish is so rich a small ramekin is more than enough as a first course. I can really recommend this recipe. Thank you, Chef John.
Thanks, delicious. Never would thought of mashed potato with cod. I have had a high rate of success with Chef John recipes.
I just love all your cooking you’re the best good job
Just made this in individual disposable aluminum loaf pans for the family. It was a hit! One thing I found to cut the richness was a healthy grind of black pepper over each serving. Nicely done!
Cod is the most underrated fish! I love it. I make a tray bake with zucchini, grape tomatoes, and cod... and it’s amazing!
I love your work John.
A new family favorite! thanks Chef John
made this tonight and it was easy, fantastic and pure comfort.
Made this last night using one bigger white dish. I didn't have tarragon, used dill and parsley. Came out great, nice flavor! Will keep this in the arsenal, thank you Chef John
Oh man, I need to make this soon. My eyes could taste how good this is. Thanks!
Amazing recipe! Switched out the cod for scallops, oh so good! Thank you for another great dish Chef John!
I think I’m going to use both cod AND scallops. Great idea!
Chef John! Yaw dah best!!! I've been copying your recipes from meatballs to biscotti and everything else for quite a few years now but somehow didn't try this one until today. But my wife said this was divine, the perfect comfort meal for a cold rainy evening.
I love you John, you inspire me.
This is beautiful! Perfect for winter, thanks!
I always get watery mouth when watching your recipes, that looks fantastic 😍
👍💯 one of my childhood favorites=whatever soup my mom poured out of the can.
I Tend to enjoy all of the recipes of your's I've tried but this one is absolutely stellar! Honestly, one of the best things I've ever eaten. Thank you so much!
That looks like perfect cold weather food!
Another winner there John !!....Every one of your creations has tasted great !!!
What was that salt cod and potato dip you made a few years ago?
Edit: Brandade! I’m very proud of myself for remembering
@Heartsongsutube if you’re a spinach lover try spinach and codfish. Fritters is another easy to do, they’re excellent with your favorite dipping sauce.
Great Job Chef John! We love you!!
Thank you so much Chef John
I'm trying this next. Looks so yummified.
I know I would LOVE this dish! I grew up with cod fish chowder, with milk, potatoes, onion and cod (ONLY Atlantic cod will do!) so similar flavors. My family lived in Bedford MA not so far from Boston where cod is king! Now I live in the Bay Area, not so terribly far from where you live, Chef John, and cod has been difficult to get here for years. I have many favorite dishes I make (fish stews with tomato, some Spanish style with paprika, baked cod with tomatoes, peppers and Mexican flavors like salsa, also I’ve made Boston fish cakes with salt cod….I’m always on the hunt for it but I rarely find it anymore. Fish markets have gone.
I recently found it at Whole Foods but it’s not a regular item.
Where, oh where do you buy your cod?
Thanks so much for your fabulous recipes and your humor and everything about you!
Chef John...you are my hero. Fabulous recipe! 💕
You delivered on this one Chef. We made this recipe last night and it was sensational! Thanks and keep them coming.
You can fish my potatoes anytime, John.... or should I say "You are the Chef John of your cod gratin...."
Great use of bowls, skillets, plates, pots, cups, mugs, and on and on
Thanks Chef john 😆. Looks delicious!! A new dish to make!!🎊☀️
As I was shopping at Lidl last week they had frozen Pacific Cod on sale for $2.99 a package, I think it's 1.5 lbs., And I bought a package, wondering what I should make with my value, and just like that, John helps me, thanks for sharing!
Did you make it? How it turn out?
another great recipe from chef John.
I'll have to try this right away! Reminds me a little bit of a desconstructed version of Icelandic plokkfiskur, which, by the way, I highly recommend!
Totally researching and trying this!
Will DEFINITELY prepare this Chef John!!
I followed this recipe to the letter. It was excellent! Such a nice change in flavor profile from my own cooking. Thanks Chef!
Well chef John you've done it again. Another banger recipe! I have covid-19 right now and can't taste anything but once I get over it I'm making this!!!
WE LOVE YOU CHEF JOHN!!!!!
What yummy !! I'll go eat, after your delicious video the appetite is playing
This is one I am definitely going to try! I love cod
I did this for my family.
I'm now in the will.
🙏❤️🙌
This is gonna be my next dish to try, at home for sure. Thank you Food Wishes!
YOU ARE AMAZING 🌹
LOVE, LOVE YOUR RECIPES 🌹
LOVE YOUR VOICE ALSO🌹
Looks great... and yummy... THANKS
I am not a huge fan of cod but I know that it is one of the better fish to eat. I do like it fried with fish and chips but can't wait to try this recipe. Chef John is turning everyone into a home chef! Thanks for sharing your cooking wisdom in such an entertaining fashion!
It's in the oven baking right now!! Thanks, Chef John! You've made my kitchen into Chez Renee!
Kudos ! This is something to try ! Thank you, Chef John!
Magnifique! I love a good piece of cod but the humour is bonus.
I had this in a restaurant in Lisbon! It never occurred to me to try and make it myself, but now I'll definitely give it a try.
Good day Chef John just watched your creamy Cod and potato grata it's Friday getting readyfor fish Fridays...This definitely is on my dinner table tonight only thing I think I would change is maybe using a little bread crumb to my Parmigiano- for browning. simplicity at its best thank you for this recipe...
Looks delicious! Cant wait to try this one :) Thanks from Ireland
Very useful, thanks
,
Thanks for sharing
Chef John , I’m so jealous of this recipe, it beautiful
You are the Chef John,
Of your Cod Gratin!
Wonderful recipe chef John thank you very much ! Super delicious
My wife is so going to make me cook this for her and I will gladly comply! Looks wonderful
Your so funny. I’m a big fan. Made many of your dessert. Love your videos. Thank you!✨💫🌟
nice. I like the way he speaks
A cod leaned into a sardine at a bar.
"I've got something to tell you, *but you can't tell a sole."*
:)
I think you told that joke just for the halibut. Or maybe it was just a fluke.
@@boredlawyer3382 😁
The only place our jokes are appreciated.
Good one, whenever I tell fish jokes I just flounder.
That looks amazing. This is going straight to the front of my to-try list!
looks delicious and easy, thank you
The only thing I would add to this is a slice or two of a good, crusty bread to get any of the extra sauce left over! YUM!!
just last night made this with chicken instead. hands down the single best chicken dish I've ever had, literally cannot thank you enough for the inspiration :)
only thing I changed was some fresh mozzarella globs sprinkled throughout the sauce before browning in the oven and I added ~50% more lemon zest
I made this for supper tonight. I really liked it. I plan to make it again and just a slight adjustment to my personal taste. Thanks for sharing. I come from a family that only know how to fry fish and I'm trying to spread my wings a little.
