The dredge ship you see is the cutter suction dredge Hampton Roads. She has been working in the port for several years deepening the port for large container ships. They started a port expansion project in the late 2010s and are finished with the main project but keep finding parts they want to further deepen. When you have rival ports like Norfolk going to 56 feet so that the large ships don’t have to wait on tide and such, the port business is very competitive. With that said, the Port of Savanna has grown significantly and is now the 3rd busiest container port in the US. In addition to good port facilities, it had both good rail and road connections. Little wonder it has grown so much.
The Hampton Roads has only done maintenance dredging in the Savannah harbor.
As a local Savannah resident, it was great to see our wonderful city from a different perspective. Thank you for posting this video.
Ga resident, been on River Street many times but never saw it like this.
Same!
I watched the entire video. Fascinating. Staying in Savannah right now at a hotel with a partial view of the river. It’s nighttime. At the end of une video I heard the sound of a horn. It was a giant container ship going by! I’m going to try and figure out what times the next ships will come by and go out to the waterfront to watch.
Thank you for this very informative, well-shot video.
install the marine traffic app on your phone its free and you can see all the ships in real time.
That was an incredible video. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I lived in Savannah for 10 years until the spring of 2021 - this was a cool way to see this. I use to fly my drone up and down the river as well. Got some great shots of the river at 400 feet🌴
As a truck driver; I appreciate you bringing in freight to many companies to keep our region supplied with freight and I hope you make many more trips enjoying the view.
As a consumer who enjoys such things as food, clothes, housewares, medicine, to name only a few, I very much appreciate your work as a truck driver, @rodneygrant7726! Thank you :)
@melissab6060 You're welcome and it's a pleasure to keep America covered.
A truck driver invented modern shipping as we know it. Sea Land after WWII.
I know that river pilot! Mr. Patrick is doing a great job!
Made it to the end with no problem. Never seen Savannah from this perspective!
Way back in the early 90's when the Raddison was just built,my ex-wife and I took the kids for a few days to Savannah. We had a 7th floor balcony room and I loved sitting out watching the river traffic and tug boats!
Really enjoyed the video and watched till the end.
Yes, i do!!!
Mighty tight squeeze turning that boat around in the Kings Island Turning Basin .
watched to the very end! GREAT video!! Thanks
Wow fantastic! Appreciate this view so much.
Watched to the end. Very informative. We were in the Riverwalk area in mid march 2024 and I watched several of these amazing ships go by.
Savannah has really changed since I was there. Thanks for the great video.. Yep made it to the end...
I live in Savannah, so this was VERY interesting to me!! I see these ships coming and going all of the time (I LOVE to sit on that beach on the river at Fort Pulaski and watch these beasts go by!!), but I never get to see them approach the dock! VERY cool!!!
Nice video. Always have enjoyed visiting Savannah and watching the ships go by on the river.
My kids and I go to Tybee Island every year for Easter vacation. I love drinking beer on the beach and watching them come in.
Made it to the end. Did skip ahead (and back) occasionally. The rotation of the ship was awesome!
Made it to the end. I’ve enjoyed visiting Savannah and watching the ships come and go. Good video. Really enjoyed the part in the turning basin.
To the end! Great video.
Outstanding video! And thanks for your knowledgeable input. Just the right length and amount of commentary.
Thank you
Have been to Savannah and the River Walk numerous times. Have been on a boat in the river and passed container ships in and out bound. This was a completely different perspective of visiting Savannah. Passing under the Talmadge Bridge was a squeaker, and then turning that monster around was interesting.Great video , thanks.
Nice ride into Port Wentworth. Perspective we would otherwise never see. Thanks!
It was fascinating to watch such a large ship turn in such a tight space. everyone was calm , cool and collected . Congrats to you all for the entertaining video. Thanks!!
150,000 gross tons
@@WhatTheShip Not too shabby!!!😁
Cool video! I live in Savannah on Wilmington Island near where you passed. My grandfather was a docking pilot years back. Thanks for sharing.
Love Savannah, its my hometown.
We stayed at that Hilton on the waterfront, had a great weekend.
Wow! The turning to the berth was wild!
I’m surprised a lot like that part of the video the most.
I live in Savannah. Love walking along the downtown waterfront and seeing the big boys coming in and out.
This so very interesting. I live 55 miles from Savannah and love watching ships come in and out. I took a trip down the river on the John W. Brown (a Liberty ship) back in 2002.
I moved to Savannah recently, and I love watching the ships coming into port from River Street and Tybee Island. Cool to see from the ship's POV.
To the end, Nice job
Made it to the end. Great video. As everyone else has mentioned, always enjoy going to Savannah and just watching the ships come in. Nice change up to see it from the cargo ship perspective.
Wonderful video. I grew up near Savannah and my Dad worked at the Diamond Construction shipyard where some Moran tugs were built in the 1960's. It amazing to see what has changed and what remains after all these years. Thank you.
I'm a resident of Savannah and will be taking a boat tour of the harbor in June 2024. This was a fascinating forecast of what I will be seeing this month. I also followed the disaster of the Dali in the Baltimore harbor as I lived there for many years and actually used the Francis Scott Key bridge to get to work. From this video, I got a better understanding of what the Dali went through when it hit the bridge. Many thanks for the very informative video.
Great video, am a native of Savannah, now living in NC. Have been to the port a number of times, and up and down the river with Captain Sam, I believe was his name. My grandfather was a retired Merchant Marine Captain, and during my HS years volunteered with the local Preist to pick up sailors that played soccer against the Savannah team to get off the ship and have some recreational time. I got to go along and was invited to tour a few ships. Those were the days.
After watching those giant container ships pass by our hotel room on a visit to Savannah three years ago, it was fascinating to finally see things from the other side. Thanks!
Made it to the end as very interesting how our goods make it to our shores. Thank you for posting that video!
Cool video! My husband was a deckhand, then wheelman on Crescent tugs in Savannah. He retired in 2018. I’ve been able to ride the tugboat and see the work from that perspective, but never from the ship! My brother-in-law and father-in-law were both river pilots in Savannah.
Made it to the end. Awesome video.
Made it to the end... thanks for the great video.
Made it to the end. What a difference the view is from the bridge deck. I love our beautiful city. This just added another great view. Glad to hear that you enjoyed your time in our hostess city the week before.
To the END. And loved it!!
Made it to the end. I live 30 miles outside Savannah. Visit often. Fish and just joy ride the Savannah River often. One time near River Street one of these beasts passed us in our 20ft Bonita. Looks like they are barely moving in the video but, in our tiny boat the wake thats made from these are awesome.
Made it to the end, informative slice of life video. Never seen river street from that angle.
This is the first time I’ve seen the view from a container ship. That is a huge ship. I have a friend that worked at the port in Savannah. Great view. Thanks!
Made it to the end. This was an awesome video so I’ll take a look at your other posts as well. You and Chief Makoi do a good job educating us landlubbers on the inner workings of commercial shipping. Way to go.
Interesting to see the Savannah river walk from this perspective. Also, great navigating by all involved . Thank you !
Pretty dang amazing, very cool view from the top deck.
I visited Savannah a few years ago, and my jaw dropped while sitting outside at one of the riverside restaurants and a container ship came downriver. The river didn’t appear wide enough for something so big. What an amazing site.
Made it to the end. I especially liked the part going under the bridge.
Loved the video. Made it to the end. I enjoyed Savannah when we were there.
I made it to the end. I like this
I was in Savannah back in 2008, I remember seeing the ships coming into the channel not too far from where I was staying, beautiful city, lots of history, made it till the end.
Thanks. Just arrived in Savannah today (by land) and it was fun to see the town from a different perspective
I watched until the end. Been to River Street and the forts a number of times but that is an awesome perspective. Thanks for sharing.
Interesting video ... a view we landlubbers never see
Just amazing. Stayed in Savannah last year right on the river. Watching these amazing ships as they slowly inched under the bridge was amazing. Especially watching them at night. What an amazing sight to see and such maneuvering skills. Can't wait to go back.
I made it to the end and watched it again !!!!!
Haha awesome!
Awesome video! As a local it’s cool seeing the city from that vantage point!
Not sure which I appreciate more. That big beautiful ship or those mighty mite little workhorse tugs.
Big engines in small packages
Yes, watched it all the way to the end. Impressive, thank you.
The end
Love it!
Awesome... thank you for this. If you're ever back in Savannah, stop in my favorite River Street seafood restaurant - Fiddler's Crab House. They've got an upper-deck outdoor dining patio where you can watch these ships as they pass.
Made it to the end. Brings back memories.
Very nice modern facilities.
I made it to the end. Thanks for the ride up river.
Very cool. So neat to see the ships pass by river street. Would be awesome to see this view.
Years ago, I was working at one of the hotels in Savanna, and I was awestruck at the ships going by. This particular hotel had a 10 story glassed in atrium, and I believe it was a car carrier. It was orange and was as tall as the building . I enjoyed my time in Savanna, lots of history. Beautiful city.
Made to the end. Great video.
Made it to the end, fascinating!
I live in SAV but never have seen this perspective perspective. Yes, I watched til the end.
Georgia boy here, it’s cool to see Savanna from the ship, I made it to the end, and let’s watch them unload the containers in a video
