Just removed the console on a 2004 Beetle convertible to replace the Tiptronic shifter cover. The sliding part had broken into many pieces and the magnets to show the gear selection had been displaced. This job is a PITA. I was extremely careful because of the brittle plastic on these New Beetles but I still ended up breaking some tabs and finding some cracks in the upper and lower console covers. The worst part was removing the rear side panels. The gear shift handle removal explanation in this video is helpful. Same for the e-brake handle removal tip (pry down on the tab under the handle) in another video I watched. Working on these New Beetles is always an adventure. Can't wait to get rid of this car.
This is a good start BUT you need to know a few more things. 1. The console doesn't come out with the parking brake handle on.There is a small clip under the handle when you pull it full on. Slip a flat screwdriver head in the slot to pry it down and pull off. The higher the brake is pulled without breaking it, the easier it is to get the console out 2. Need to remove the trim at the front of the console under the dash (2 torx screws either side and one Philips by the accelerator pedal. 3. This is all easier to do with the seats removed (not sure if there are videos - you undo the 2 bolts under the front of the seats and remove the plastic covers for the sliders (torx screws). You need to disconnect the electrics under each seat - mostly squeeze and pull type or flip and pull (if that's a term). Go slowly and work it out like I did. Slide the seats back out of the sliders and pull out 4. Pull out the console and the front piece (see 2) carefully. DON'T forget to unhook the 2 12v outlets! Squeeze type connections 5. The tiptronic box cannot be repaired IMHO. I bought a replacement unit for under $300 on ebay - check VIN and model before you buy. Most sellers will check for you 6. The old unit is secured by 4 clips at each corner (no screws) just use a screwdriver to gently pry the tabs open - look at the new unit for clues as to where they are. Disconnect the electrics before you pull out. Slide the new unit in and re-connect. Check it works before you reassemble everything! 7. Lastly, while you have all that dirty plastic out of the car, give it a good clean. You'll never get the chance again to get all that old gunk off. Acetone on a rag (not soaking) will remove a lot of the gooey soft touch crap that VW applied. AND vacuum around the shifter and remove any broken bits from the old unit 8. Put it all back together - reverse of taking apart Hope this helps. I didn't make a video or take pics but it's pretty straightforward
I just needed to get the shift handle off, this was very helpful for that. Otherwise didn't get the visual of what you were fixing here. Only problem I had was when the cardboard fell out and the button popped all the way in, I had to gently reach up into the shifter handle with a piece of coat hanger w/ short 90 bend at the end and got the button started out and pulled it the rest of the way before inserting new piece of cardboard and used masking tape around the button for good measure. 😜
You were doing good there for a while and then you skipped a whole portion of the repair? It is hard to tell what you fixed. Is there any chance you can redo this, or let me know and I can do it as I am trying to repair mine.
How do you take the entire cover off? You missed a very important step. Like do I take off the bolts in the front where the cigarette lighter is? How do I remove the brake cover? I'm so confused 🤔

Thanks. It helps to clear the ebrake to release tension on the brake. To do this, note where the position is, and un-tension the ebrake so the handle can be almost perpendicular and you can just lift the console up. Remember to put it back in the same position to have ebrake. I had to replace the circuit board because of water damage.
Dude bro you didn't show us how to take the center console out, you took a few screws out and then the next seen the whole thing was off and around the parking brake . This part is the hardest task that everybody wants to know how do 💀 good grief.. what is the point
Dude, WTF! You strip it all down and then you don't show the repair!

Okay, this video is totally confusing. What did you actually fix? Seems there is a Huge Chunk missing or you edited the most important parts.

Do you know how to clean the ABS sensors behind the wheels?

Has anyone found this slip cover online for purchase. The one on my daughter's car disintegrated.
Good video. I have the same issue. How did your fix last?

Video shows nothing about the repair. Its almost like it was edited out.
Does this work on 2007 beetle?
So.... what was the actual problem? The broken belt was causing the display problem somehow?
