- The Green Knight is spooky and ethereal and visually stunning. But it still has sins, yo. So we counted 'em.
Next week: Recent action sins and recent action/horror sins.
Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie's sins should we count next?

Wally West: Because he’s evil.
I don't know if I can wait the 30 years for them to confirm The Green Knight is a christmas movie.
“Lady, being a virgin IS what keeps my five fingers strong” Jeremy goddamn it you’ve done it again
Yep so funny but so true
3:21 Reminds me of an exchange between wizards in Terry Pratchett's book, Reaper Man.
'People can be turned into zombies, you know,' said the Lecturer in Recent Runes, in conversational tones.
'You don't even need magic. Just the liver of a certain rare fish and the extract of a particular kind of root.
One spoonful, and when you wake up, you 're a zombie.'
'What type of fish?' said the Senior Wrangler.
'How should I know?'
'How should anyone know, then?' said the Senior Wrangler nastily. 'Did someone wake up one morning and say, hey, here's an idea, I'll just turn someone into a zombie, all I'll need is some rare fish liver and a piece of root, it's just a matter of finding the right one? You can see the queue outside the hut, can't you? No. 94, Red Stripefish liver and Maniac root . . . didn't work. No. 95, Spikefish liver and Dum-dum root . . . didn't work. No. 96 -'
'What are you talking about?' the Archchancellor demanded.
'I was simply pointing out the intrinsic unlikelihood of -'
'Shut up,' said the Archchancellor, matter-of-factly.
Senior Wrangler would be excellent at CinemaSins.
Sir Terry Pratchett would've been the knightiest knight of knights at CinemaSins. 💕 (Still miss him).

I never met him but a late friend of mine that worked as a research librarian in the UK met him when he dropped by the library doing research. Whoever writes the scripts did a phenomenal job on this one. I have already done three laughing spit-takes a mere seven minutes into the video. This is comedic gold and I commend you.
17:51, I wish they included that in the movie! ;)
Yea, we all came here for masturbation, boner jokes, and references to movies other than this one.
12:11 I’ll give you a sin. Foxes don’t howl, they kinda scream. It would’ve been way more creepy and eerie for the fox to scream, and then to have the giants scream back.
So this is like a medieval Death Stranding with all the walking around, huh
Gawain died a failure bound in the forest by the bandits. The rest of the film is a Jacob's Ladder style death/fever dream.
I chock the the death and forest, the axe always appearing next to him. As his mother and the story doing everything it can to make gawain a hero but you can't make somebody something they are not.
Real life be like "let's make Everything wrong with the world, in 18 years or less"
Oof
Visually I loved the movie, happy to have seen this art in a theater. But the narrative choices by the antagonist and then the protagonist.... Hooh-boy Hand-tactically wacky.
This is based on an epic poem, if you’ve read any of those shit gets fuckin nuts in epic poems.
I mean the movie is about the futility of trying to pretend me something your aren't. Even though his mom set up to succeed he failed and in the vision even though his mom saved him from his mistakes he still failed in the end. The only Thing gawain could do was accept what he was.
@@thedeepfriar745 Thing is, they made it more nuts just for their own A24 purposes; like they completely removed his agency towards kissing the Lord, so it just doesn’t carry the meaning of the poem. So this is more the whim of the production rather than the nature of the poem.
Ah. Every earth doku is more beautiful then this mid movie
@@jolanjakers8380the movie is about him being a useless, irredeemable loser, who’s mom set him up to die for some reason. The poem was about striving for greatness, while accepting your flaws.
He sinned uneaten pie? That's the best kind of pie! It means you have pie to eat!
Or to reenact American Pie

When you can see it, yeah
If you are blind maybe
Beautiful, it is.
You not seen a lot of beautiful movies then, i guess.
It was not beautiful at all in my opinion.
I started to take a drink right at the (if my wife gives you a handy) line and I almost spit it out. Bravo cinema sins, great line.
Missed a good one at the 18.43 mark: The guy sitting next to the tree with arrows sticking out of him - Arrow sound and "Message for you sir" from Holy Grail.
Whole lot of nothing happening in this movie,I thought they would have made it shorter as the story it's based on isn't even as long as the Hobbit.
Considering they turned the Hobbit into a trilogy, this might be a bad comparison.
Honestly I preferred the original tale, it showed Gawain actually have development and it had a clear ending.
I enjoyed the ambiguous ending actually. The poem is superior in other ways but I thought the final 20 minutes of the movie were amazing
Absolutely
Considering how many Arthurian tales varied wildly in their "endings" (and details) depending on the given version, I thought it was appropriate that this film ended on a slightly ambiguous note. We American audiences hate an unclear ending (e.g. the literary ending for The Shawshank Redemption), even when telling that last little bit is unnecessary given the message of the story. I think that this was one of those, just my opinion of course :-)
but here gavain has development and you have to be stupid to not realise that

Go ahead and plot his arc, then.
"Lady being a virgin is what keeps my five finger strong"
Best line in this video and it caught me totally by surprised.Actually made me laugh out loud
The shot of the tree falling around 7:30 (and the war-ravaged countryside with brigands operating out in the open shortly thereafter) are representative of the slow death and disintegration of the once rich and powerful kingdom of Camelot.
A kingdom which is now dying along with its King and Queen, many years after the nonsense with Guinevere and Lancelot, in which the Queen has been forgiven but Lancelot still has not returned from his quest for the Grail.
‘It’s a Christmas movie, you’ll love it’ is genuinely how my partner sold this to me. It’s not a Christmas movie, but I did love it.
Medieval times made me straight up laugh my ass off..thank you
This is one of the funniest Sins videos I have watched in a while. Great job CinemaSins team!
Headphones disconnect from the phone mid meeting and all I hear is “lady, being a virgin IS what keeps my fingers strong” 😂💀
My cousins and I watched this together and walked away like, "Did we all take a trip together? Did someone roofie our popcorn?"
“Movies that are dumbed down brain candy = enjoyable
Movies with substance that focus on mature themes = boring”
This basically sums up the entire comments section :/
The fantastic mr fox outtake killed me 😂😂😂
But “he is risen” is an Easter thing, isn’t it? This is Christmas.
me and freind went to see this movie. I knew very little of this tale but super confused i think half way through. My friend who a big fan of the Arthurian tales, was like they took a lot creative liberty with this.
There is a delicious irony in any fan of Arthurian tales perceiving that any given adaptation is taking many liberties, given that the entire canon is nothing but adaptations of long-developing stories that each brought their own details to the telling.
If you check out what the filmmakers have said about their intent with this, they knowingly set out to tell the story with many vague elements, in keeping with many of the tellings of old. This actually nailed the heart of the ancient literary approaches - we're just not used to seeing that done on film!
@Brandocious Fair enough. My suggestion is to ponder whether any movie is completely garbage if it does some things very well, and I think you like most can speak to it being a visual masterpiece. If you personally found those visuals wasted on what felt like an incoherent or weak or whatever plot, who's to argue with that opinion, right? Nobody can ever be wrong to not personally enjoy a film!
@@steelygreye9187 I personally loved the film and have enjoyed it multiple times already. I also know that slower, contemplative, character driven films tend to not appeal to many moviegoers, and there's nothing wrong with that.
The Transformers movies made oodles of money from appealing to countless people, and I personally find them to be unwatchable (due to lousy characters meshed with incoherent visual spectacle, again in my opinion). I went on the Transformers ride at Universal in Florida and found it just as incoherent and unfun, whereas the Spider-Man ride (which was the same type of ride) was a blast thanks to coherent action.
To each his own. Just because someone doesn't care for this type of film doesn't mean it's unwatchable. How many people find Shakespeare to be intolerable these days (my wife doesn't care for his works), and yet it's beloved by countless folks. But I return to my original point: the intent of the filmmakers was to represent the essence of the medieval tale in film form, and I think they nailed it. Whether that result appeals to any given single person is up to that person's individual preferences.
@@steelygreye9187 Again, I found the characters engaging in this film and did not struggle to follow what was happening. There is some intentional ambiguity, but that doesn't make it difficult to follow. And even if it did, that isn't necessarily a bad thing...The Lighthouse is ambiguous to a fault and at times very difficult to follow, because the film is loaded with allegory and unreliable narrators. It's an amazing film for what it seeks to be. I won't fault anyone for feeling that isn't his or her cup of tea - I expect it, really - but I will sneer at anyone who tries to denounce it outright. Amazing to some, not at all worth it to others, in between for still more. Don't fault a film for going down the non-beaten path, especially when such films offer amazing cinematography and other visuals to go with their "different" story approach.
You can always count on A24 to traumatize the shit out of you.
I saw one of their films which had an.... ending? That one was way less traumatic.
Whoa, a -1 sin count to start the video is bloody rare. Has a film's logos ever got a sin removed before?!
Yes, but not for the logos per say, actually, more for the short intros, logos etc. that lead into the movie in question. A few films CS have already done in the past already had sins removed for short opening logos, honestly. Lol
Only one I could think of is the Trolls 2 video, even though it might be a joke (it was true that the movie starts with no logo so idk)
When I saw this movie in theaters, I left speechless. Took me the whole night to digest it.
The only thing I was digesting was why I wasted my time and money to be blue balled by beautifully pointless scenes
much like it takes the whole night to digest an entire box of kitty litter. you really shouldn't have eaten it in the first place.
no bc me too it sent me silent all night
Did not expect this to be on cinemasins but here we are
I like how Jeremy basically gave up and said "No, I'm not bothering to sin the 'Gawain is King' ending in full. I'm just gonna mention it in passing and wash my hands of it."
Important clarification: the film's chosen pronunciation of Gawain is "gow-an", as in "cow". The "r" thrown in by King Arthur is just the actor's accent, which the director kept in because he liked it. This matters (to me at least!) because the "Gawain" we virtually always hear spoken as it looks is generally agreed by scholars to be 50/50 that pronunciation or the alternative "Gowan", historically; neither is fully right or wrong, but you don't hear the latter very often. And that matters to me because my father's name was Gowan, and we always half-joking talked about how everyone said the knight's name wrong, and then this film came out and chose the "correct" pronunciation and I had tears in my eyes every time I heard it and...thanks movie, you got me all blubbery again!
Gwalchmai called and wants to know what's crackin'
Your dad was named after the former Klingon high chancellor?
This has got to be the first ever sin removed for duration of opening logos.

I don't think so, at least there are others that have commenced with negative sins.

Beautiful movie, stunning directing and I absolutely LOVE Dev but goddamn was it a slog to get through. The reviews were hyping it up like it was the second coming of Jesus on film and I honestly think there's a good movie in there if you cut out about 45 minutes. I ended up just being annoyed for most of the movie that every time he would get back on track to the search and I thought the movie would pick up some steam he'd stop suddenly and I'd have to wait out the endless shots of scenery and travelling that while aesthetically pleasing just made for bizarre pacing. I couldn't wait for it to end honestly.
I agree with most of what you said, however I find something that bored me so outstandingly, has NO direction to call it good directing, and no, seeing the same ol' slog over and over, isn't beautiful.
One fundamental problem I had here though, whence talking about the boring journey. I just about went out of my mind when he arrives to the stiff dude, and can't stand he's going to sit there and do nothing (but earlier movie should had prepared me for the notion, that when you think things can't get worse, and make less sense, it will), but then I "think" I figured that terribly exciting part out, so the question is, why did he wait a day? The answer is, because he got there a day too quickly. Okay, fine, but get this. He started the journey by horse, not knowing his horse would be stolen, so he ends up walking most of the way.
If I understand correctly, he wasn't entirely sure where he was going, but maybe just a general feel. Even so, he has to be timely here, so maybe he left a day or two early, to allow for some screwing around time in case of...... well, anyway. Let's say he left early enough to get there, when he did, Christmas Eve. How did he get there on time, even early for crying out loud, when he lost his horse for so much of the journey? This movie was made to torture people, and the illogic of what I described, just shows the dedication to torture the audience further when he finally gets there. It's like stealing a kid's candy and then throwing it to somebody else, who in turn throws it to somebody else, in a game of keepaway. I liked Wonder Woman more than this tripe (and that's LOW). The very end was sort of cute, but it sure the hell wasn't worth all the torture.
I'm actually a bit surprised I didn't walk out, but I thought the end might make it worth it, and it didn't, of course.
You have missed the meanings of the poem that the movie represents. The poem has been a mystery for centuries; it comes from folk tales and myths set down in the Middle Ages. It has many interpretations. English majors everywhere have studied it’s confusing elements; it’s about finding honor in oneself rather than having it bestowed by others. Dev Patel is very good in this.
This was trash
12:02 we interrupt the green knight to bring you David Lowery's Attack On Titan.
I saw and loved _The Green Knight_ movie when it came out. I concur that Ralph Ineson has an outstanding voice; James Earl Jones level.
Considering referencing _The Witch_ / _The VVitch,_ I was surprised you didn't mention (didn't notice?), that, as with Ralph Ineson, Katie Dickie, his wife from that film, was also in this film.
Also surprised you don't double-dip with the "one year hence" line in the audio outtakes, also using the Jeffrey Combs _Re-Animator_ line, "Who's going to listen to a talking head; get a job at a sideshow..." 😉

+10 sins for CinemaSins not washing their hands
I went into the theater with high expectations... I left with a headache. Not sure if it was just the one I was in, but the volume control was all over the damned place and at times physically painful to my ears...
Visually the movie was good, I quite liked a lot of the imagery but the 'plot' was a chaotic mess of... well... nonsense. How things kept seemingly appearing when there was no reason why they might, things like the scene of his death in the woods... The giants... All in all, I'd rather have not spent the time nor money to see it, as it smacked of art for the same of art, and not a story told to entertain, enlighten, or in the most common of legends, to tell a story with a message. The only lesson that I think it imparted was 'reap what you sow'.
If you liked it, I'm happy to hear... and I wonder if one of us is crazy.
The movie adapted the speech and story style of the classic story to a T. I wished they took liberties to make the film more digestible rather than having long shots of obvious symbolism over and over (track shot of Gawain's skeleton for example )
The best explanation of how I felt while watching that movie
That "the kings speech " slander shan't go unpunished
