When people moan it being cold in there house/workplace thay have absolutely no idea what cold is, or how cold outside in winter can be, Plus people looking right through you in that judgemental mindset. I came from money on my dads side but I made some poor choices in the late 90,s/early 2000s. With drugs. If you have been there only you will completely agree, I give money to homeless people regularly.... and have comments like they will spend it on one thing! But if they can get a good night's kip I never ever judge.

Paignton used to be one of those special holiday places back in the 60’s. You have to remember the people living there and visiting had grown up before WW1 and the great depression 1930. They had a different sense of themselves. Perhaps a product of physical hard times more than emotional ones. There was definitely a sense of place and behaviour. A connection with history. This, regrettably has all been so diluted. There’s little social decorum and cohesion.
I see this everywhere I visit. Such a shame and the young people don’t have a clue to what has been lost.
Your cheap room at £60 a night made me smile. I remember a pint of mild at 1 shilling and eight pence. A weeks rent at £3 . This was ‘69, not that long ago.
I do enjoy your outings. Most enlightening. 👍

That homeless lady is so lovely. Its shocking how our gov and councils prioritise people who come across the channel in boats and give them Hotels to stay in and 3 meals a day and spending money. Last year after years in private rental i had to find a new place after a no fault eviction My adult son and I viewed lots of places but were not accepted for any so we simply ran out of time. Luckily for us we were able to stay with family members and sleep on a mattress on the living room floor for a few months. Luckily a nice landlord has now accepted us for a lovely little house. We are now happy again. Hope this lady finds a place.

Those of us who have lived and worked in the area of Torbay have knowledge of what it's really like. I've cleaned that destroyed car park that you filmed. I've been attacked too many times to be able to count, and I was elated when I finally escaped the place. I was parked up in paignton a few weeks ago. Right behind you there's a car park by the bmx and skate park. While working on my van a motorbike raced through followed by a police car. The bike sped up the park track, an officer jumped out the car and pursued on foot, a helicopter in the sky above. The rider hit the gravel, lost control and came off. Fun times.

      @ouroborosirvington 9 місяців тому

@@robh8814 nar this lad was fine just slid off the bike at low speed, he was walked back to the police car and taken away, probably to the hospital for a check over. Besides, young youtes are always dying having accidents in stolen vehicles, it's been going on for as long as I can remember and should be a precautionary tale as to the importance of getting a licence. That said, I was driving for a few years before getting my licence and at one point had 18 points on my licence/even though I didn't have one. I would like to point out I never went joy riding and only used my cars to commute to work. I had an Austin metro 1.3 automatic and then a Renault fuego. I was pulled over a few times but never had the vehicles seized and remember driving to torquay magistrates, parking in the car park, going and getting said points, coming out and getting back in my car and driving away. They were different times I guess. I was 21 by the time I finally got my licence.

Unfortunately, for a town that relies on tourism for their livelyhood, drag racing, biker gatherings and a pleasant nightly stroll along the front, just don't jive together. I haven't been to Paington for many years, but when I did, I don't remember fearing I was going to be confronted by a group of angry young men. I think it's just sad. I'm not blaming the young people who are involved, they seemed respectful enough. But there's that uneasy feeling one gets when coming in contact with a group like this. I think , in so many ways, they're just bored. I'm from Birmingham and I feel much safer going out at night there than I would going out in Paignton after dark. This was an eye opener. Thanks for sharing Wendall.

Centre of Paignton at night or Centre of London at Night.. I cant stand London but London is much safer & where I live in London is safer than that.. Paignton is a "Retirement Community" . People of a certain age dont want to have to put up with that at time of night & life. Also where they were doing that , there use to be a big Cinema. Been to Paignton in the 2000's. U would never get me going back. If I did it would be for the day & out of there once the Sun goes down.

Hello Wendall. I still have a British passport. Your videos continue to be fascinating insights about UK today. A word of warning. If you ever visit the Palace of Westminster in search of gangs of feral yobs you will be kipping the night on the street yourself. You definitely will not find what you consider to be a reasonably priced (£60 per night!) hotel. And get there well before nightfall, before the feral yobs drift off to their tax-payer funded London apartments, incensed after their tax-payer funded liquid lunches and a whole day of shouting and squabbling. All on a miserable £91,346 per year (as of next week).

Considering his later comment of "She's dead" & how he was speaking then the Guy might have the mental torture of loosing his wife 13 yrs ago & being left on his own.. Generally Women live longer than blokes & its a well known fact that Women can "survive" or "cope" better on their own. He stopped, talked to her, offered her some money & she didnt have to ask..
Now granted a better way would be to say I" cant bend down, can you take it off me"..
What surprised me is she's been on the street for 8 months & said she had been working since she was 13 yrs old. Doesn't she have any kids or friends close by that she could stay with. Even sleeping on an Airbed in the Living room or "sofa surfing" is better than being homeless.
Its really sad that there isnt anyone that can help her out like that..
If any one of my friends were ever in that situation then Id let them stay as long as they needed to get sorted & I know it would returned.

We’ve lost a lot of shops and the council promised to build a shopping centre where our dolphin square got knocked down. They just left rubble, there are lovely parts to Weston. The parks are kept very well maintained and going out the country side to places like Bleadon, the levels where you went to Glastonbury are beautiful. I miss Paignton also, I was born and raised in Paignton, back in the 70s, 80s and 90s. I loved walking to the harbour, then round the corner from there Fairy Cove, Goodrington and Broadsands beach, Elberry cove, the list goes on, it's so magical. Not forgetting the Zoo, Clennon Valley woods, Occombe Valley woods.
Can't believe there's people that winge about living there, with so much more to explore than just the town centre.
Would love to move back to Devon.

The man at 8:26 mentions an important factor for the decline of local shops, which many people don‘t see. There’s always the idea of „the customer is always right“. The thing is, customers often underestimate their own powers when they act in groups to make a choice, which in the case of online shopping led to the demise of local stores first, and then of whole streets second. Sure, it‘s more comfortable to shop online, but then you shouldn‘t complain about all the local shops closing down, because that‘s the effect. As for homelessness: the rise of homelessness coupled with more empty buildings is probably the big contradiction of our time. Some people in the comments section blame local governments, but how can the councils act when their budget has been cut drastically by the national government over the past 14 years?

seems to me wendall only gets back to those who think drag strip is ok. he does not go to qed or foxholes early hours on his own. he should go to turlin moor and bourne estate in poole early hours too. when did they get permission to have a drag strip there anyway and does any one ever see if cars or bikes legal or test them to see if they are drunk or under the influence. letting this behaviour carry on is condoning it and i do feel vehicles confiscated to start with. drag racing at legal venues only. not public areas.

It had started off with a 100 bikes doing a ride-out in Honour of Conor (with the Police helping by stopping the traffic at the site of the crash). It ended where you were. One of the young lads you spoke to was giving Conor CPR as he passed away. His death was witnessed by several people there that night. Feral? No. Sometimes loud? Yes. Approachable? Absolutely!

They have been allowed to slip downwards , filling up with people who have been given a home or hotel room but there are no jobs or infrastructure to maintain them . Seaside towns are also renowned to have a very transient population which does not help I have found most of the local people to be friendly but wouldn’t live there .
