  • I think the Tim Holtz Tonic Rotary Media Trimmer is incredible. It works perfectly. I have been using it for a few weeks and it cuts straight, it cuts through chipboard like it's paper, and it cuts even the thinnist of pieces of paper or chipboard. It's really amazing. I will have more to say about this but since I used this to cut all of the thin pieces of chipboard for the book nook in my last tutorial, I really wanted to take just 5 minutes to show you how well it works!

I tried to cut what you cut and the cutter moved all over my desk. It is so light that I had to find a way to anchor it down in order to cut. I found it almost useless. It cut it, but I literally had to hold it down with my elbows.

      Hi Hope,
I’m sorry to hear you had trouble with the cutter. You should only need to apply pressure to the plastic piece that holds the paper or chipboard in place, then a small amount of pressure to push the rotary blade.
Since this is just a short video to share what I like about it, I recommend watching Tim’s actual demo of the cutter as it might help you figure out what is wrong.

My chipboard is graphix med weight .055- not .050 chipboard. I am wondering if it will cut it. I get mine off amazon as well.

Mine just snags the paper and tears it regardless of the pressure - not a good buy😢

Hi Ruth, it’s probably the way you are using it. It takes a little bit of practice. It’s not the amount of pressure you use because it isn’t cutting against a mat like most rotary cutters.
Put your fingers on both sides of the cutter and as you push the blade up or down, make sure it is cutting against the side of the metal edge. If it isn’t cutting against the metal edge it has nothing to cut against and it will just tear the paper.
This was just a quick demo showing how I love the way it cuts chipboard, and not a full demo. So I do recommend that you watch Tim’s actual demo and explanations on his UA-cam channel.
When I demoed it in person with scrapbookers and showed them to make sure the rotary blade is cutting toward the edge and not just pushing straight down, they were all really pleased with it.
      Don’t give up! 🙂
