    I know its late here, but I've been reflecting on this song a bit. And I still love it, but is it just me or does the song itself sound a whole lot like Default's Wasting My Time? I remember thinking that it sounded familiar, and thought maybe I had heard this when I was younger and shrugged it off. But I heard Default on the radio today, and now I can't shake it.

    This video absolutely, just broke me. You might have noticed through watching this and other videos, I have a tattoo running down my arm, that reads Choose Life. I got it because at the time, I felt like I needed a reminder. Something I see when I look at myself, that no matter what other choices I make, to continue to choose life, and living. And this video, just brought back all of that, all at once. I wasn't even sure if I wanted to post the reaction, but here it is.

      I could see you were beginning to struggle holding back and then I saw the whole tattoo on your arm. I am glad you reacted to the video. I wasn’t sure if perhaps you knew someone or if it may have been for yourself. I’m glad you shared with us about your struggles. You are not alone. There is no more stigma regarding mental health, and that seems to be the only positive element from the pandemic in that even people that didn’t have prior mental health issues wound up having anxieties and other issues due to it. I have my own struggles even prior to this darned COVID crud. We’re here for you, and anyone else that needs to know they’re not alone. As far as the song goes,, Billy does have a really soothing voice and Austin’s voice blended beautifully with his. That bass really was very present throughout. Adam held down a very tasteful beat with his percussion, and the rest were amazing, as well!

    Billy Gilman was about 11 or 12 when he originally did this song in 2000, around the time after Columbine tragedy. Its the 20th anniversary of the song. He was on Team Adam on the Voice. He still performs and does Quarantunes on Facebook. So glad he is back. This song is much needed right now. He started his career young as a country artist.

    I remember Billy Gilman as a child star with an exceptionally high tenor. Twenty years later he still has it. I also remember the original of this song and he has done a very good cover of the original and as usual, Home Free is holding back and giving the original singer the room to shine. Thanks Dan for reacting so sensitively to this one.

  • @addisonmcdorman7929

    Billy Gilman was a huge child recording star and released this song, One Voice, when he was 12 years old. It was also on his first album. The song became a hit and was played often on country music radio.
    He was on The voice four or five seasons ago. He would have been 26 or 27 not 15.
    And please you never have to apologize for being moved buy a song. Music moves most of us. I'm sorry to hear that this particular one somehow hit close to home for you.

  • @miamidolphinsfan
    @miamidolphinsfan 3 роки тому +18

    Raw emotion brother, glad you showed us that. Nothing wrong with showing that. Home Free & Billy hit another home run with this. Many bands wouldn't touch this, but Home Free knew there are people who need to hear this & need to use those helplines. This cuts close to home for me too. I have a cousin that committed suicide 2 years before I was born. It caused such a rift in the family, that there are 1st cousins that have never ever talked to each other. It split the family and its still split 63 years later.

    • @DanFromHali
      @DanFromHali  3 роки тому +3

      I'm glad they did. People need that now. I'm sorry to hear about your cousin, Kevil. I can see that causing a rift. Especially when 63+ years ago, there wasn't just a stigma around it, people thought it was a sign of weakness, or selfishness, instead of having a conversation about why it happened. It can bring people together.

      Debbi, that's something I learned a long time ago. Growing up in a small town, with a father from a smaller town, I was always told to not cry, and told to hold it back, called 'em crocodile tears. He's grown since then, into one of the best men I know. But him telling me not to cry, pushed me to show my feelings more. I know... such a rebel. But I always wear my heart on my sleeve. Sadness, pain, love, guilt, anger... I can't hide it, and don't want to. Thanks for watching, and for the comment Debbi!

    It’s ok to cry. I’ve been crying to every reactor for this song. It’s beautifully done and Billy has a beautiful voice. I tried to read your arm tattoo but I just couldn’t make it out so thank you for telling us it says choose life. So true! This song is so important especially during these tough times in the pandemic and especially for kids. There is always hope and God is here for us. We all get depressed and life is stressful but there are so many blessings too. Home Free can be silly and yet they can be so good and tackle the tough topics. We can get through this and we’ll be the better for it. Stay strong and pray. Bless you.

    • @DanFromHali
      @DanFromHali  3 роки тому +1

      Its really tough, but I'm glad they did this because it is so important. And yeah, you're welcome. When I first started getting tattoo's I wanted my ink to match my personality, and what I enjoyed. So it was all geeky stuff. Then, I had a hard time with life one year. I moved to a new city for my now ex-girlfriend, knew next to nobody... I left my girlfriend, her father was head of my department at work and had me laid off, I was going back to school to be a Millwright, working 3 jobs just to pay the bills (Including working at a bar, where I was basically fighting all the time). I walked out of my apartment one day, and I didn't know if I wanted to come back, or wanted anything. I sat down on a bench in front of my building, thinking about how some of my friends that I lost due to this may have felt this way. I thought about their family, my family, my friends back home, even my ex... and how she would think it was all her fault. I thought about my jobs, school, the future, what I wanted... if anything in life.
      Then I got up, and went to walk to school, and the funniest thing happened. A guy walked out of a building with a big white bandage over his harm. I looked up and seen this bright red shop, with a red devil design on the sign that read: Utility Tattoo. And I knew what I wanted to do. I walked in, asked about a consultation. So I sat in with this guy, Andy. I tell him what I want, that I still wanted it to be geeky, but be a serious message. We bounced the ideas off of each other. And by the end of it, I had an appointment to come in the next day, and get a new tattoo.
      My thoughts that day were more of despair and reflection, and shouldering all of the pain, and dark thoughts I ever had, and fending them off. I don't think I was in real danger that day. But sitting down with Andy, and just having a conversation about the art, completely made my day. Just one little connection. One little honest conversation about something so small.
      And now that moment is with me forever as a reminder to make those connections, have those little honest conversations... no matter how small.

    Nice respectful reaction on a song where silence is probably the best reaction. I checked out Default's "Wasting My Time" and agree that "One Voice" sounds a lot like it though it is actually the other way around. Billy Gilman's recording of this song came out on 20 Jun 2000, more than a year earlier than "Wasting My Time" which came out 25 Sep 2001.

Never took the step to try suicide because i was never pushed beyond what the people that i trusted could shore me up. But the thoughts of how to do it.... Those horrible thought were with me for a long time. The bullying started in preschool and stopped around ninth grade.

    My own experience the last couple years, every time I felt down, people who knew I was normally a strong person, just shook it off, "Get over yourself, Lana." "You have to be strong, Lana" "You are pushing ppl away because you're so down."
    I found out one thing, Dan, people kill themselves when they have no one left to listen.
    If friends and family would only realize that. How close so many of us come to ending it all. Thank you for sharing a bit of yourself. It is important.
    Oh, and I'm okay. Dug deep inside me and found the strength to get through this w/ the help of God.

    I can not listen to this song and not cry, As a person who deals with Depression and Anxiety on a daily basis this song really hits home. I hope if someone is feeling like they don't belong. or is getting bullied or needs someone to talk to that they find that person, if you are the person who someone comes to please listen to them you might just save a life. Suicide, depression, anxiety are real and we all need someone to listen to us and try and understand what it is we need. Thanks to Homefree and Billy Gilman for this fantastic and emotional song. Dan sorry for whatever happened I know its hard to talk about but showing emotion is our release valve, God Bless you.

    I think I prefer Billy Gilman's original 2000 version. It came out not long after the Columbine High School shooting massacre in 1999.Billy Gilman was about 12 years-old at the when he did the original recording back in 2000. I think it resonated more with me because the song was released shortly after Columbine and I had watched the funerals of some of the victims ( one of them open casket) on tv.This is still a beautiful updated rendition of the song.

I've seen this well over 20 times now and I still feel like I've been kicked in the chest, my heart breaks every time he pulls that gun out of the desk and then the tears follow when he's safe in Mama's arms. Mental health is a huge concern and should be treated like any other health concern. We think nothing of people taking meds for high blood pressure, getting treatment for cancer, or a cast on a broken leg. The mind is just another body part that needs care whether it's counseling, meds, or a combination. If you are not ok, that's ok, but reach out! Your life matters and you are worthy of love. ❤

      It's Canada enough! And yeah, exactly it Mike! When this all first it, and the bar I called home for years closed down... I didn't know what to do. We were lucky enough that our government started giving us $2000 a month (Paying for that in taxes right now, but hey, it was something). That was $2000 for rent, and groceries. I didn't need gas, or cab money, or money to go out and see a movie, or have a drink, or whatever... Halifax was completely shut down for the most part. So I invested in a cheap tower that I upgraded, a couple monitores, a fair amount of lighting, two cameras, a decent mic, desk, headset, stream deck, the whole 9. My plan was to get my communication, and friendship digitally... including sharing my thoughts and experiences through video.
      This kind of outlet has been a saving grace for me, and now that things have eased up a little, and I'm working again (Though a different job)... I'm still trying to do this, on a different platform, and its helping a lot.
      COVID-19 is a pain in the butt. I hate dealing with it. but with all the BS it's given me, I've gotten a couple new communities out of it, I've started doing this, I've met my girlfriend through this pandemic... who is my anchor, and it forced me to leave a job where I was literally getting paid to fight almost every night, and found myself something with an office and air conditioner.
      So silver linings in everything, Mike.

    I had noticed your tattoo before and almost mentioned it previously as it has the same vibe as my email address. I am so glad I chose life and have spent the last 20ish years taking every opportunity as a youth leader/ mentor and any other opportunity that just arises fighting for life for others too. Reminding them they are worthy, loved, needed and anything opposite they tell themselves, or what other people might tell them (I was bullied) are lies. At the very least, if they are in my life, then I love them, so “nobody loves you and no one will miss you” just can’t be a truth. This video has made teary a few times already. Powerful. Especially if you’ve walked through it.
    I’m so glad you are choosing life, Dan. It’s precious and we have already been blessed by the fact that you did.

    • @DanFromHali
      @DanFromHali  3 роки тому

      Thank you for sharing all of that Melissa. Life as a kid for me was tough. The school I went to was super tiny, but it always felt like either you were the bully or bullied. There was no rising above. There was just succumbing to the torment, fighting back, or making sure nobody ever wanted to torment you. It wasn't until getting to high school, when I started feeling like I was able to be more well adjusted, and learning that not everybody was the same, and not every day was a fight. People need to know that there is an end to it, and sometimes they can't find that on their own.
