Several years ago, here in Winston-Salem, NC, John Gorka was playing in a lower level place downtown. Had had a fine concert, time for a break. I walked past a small table (2 ladies) and saw John G. He had just started this song. One of the women seemed to be approaching her end of life, by the things I saw... I think the other woman had reached out to John Gorka, asking for this song, for her companion. He did it, performing very privately and wonderfully, from what I could hear.
When I play this, I can't get through this song without crying like a baby. The love that Margaret holds for the Dutchman breaks my heart every time. This song targets the heart directly - may we all be fortunate enough to find a Margaret in this life.
I have a "Margaret." How lucky am I? I promised myself I'd learn this song. Not sure I can. Lots of words. And if I learn them, could I ever sing the whole song through without breaking down. Not sure. Gotta try.
So sad to hear of Michael's passing...your version is WONDERFUL and a great tribute!!! I love ALL of your songs as well!!! RIP, Michael 😪 BUT THE MUSIC LIVES ON 🎶❣🎶❣🎶❣🎶❣🎶❣🎶❣🎶❣🎶

One of the finest folk songs of my lifetime. The older I get, the harder it is to not break up when singing it, I know what you mean.

There's not a Gorka song or cover that I don't love. He's a huge influence to me and my shows. Rock on Gorka!

Beautiful cover of a Beautiful song
Beautiful job John. Very meaningful as Michael prepares for a new voyage. Goodman's version of this song did the very same for me that it did for you.
What a beautiful tribute! Wait, what's that moisture in my eyes?

Nice version, I can't get through Steve Goodmans version without balling.
1:18 performance
It was actually written by Irishman > Liam Clancy...not Mike Smith
alex ellinson wrong. he wrote it 4 clancy. he talks about it in the vid.
The song was written by Michael Smith in 1968 and it was covered by Clancy.
Looks like we have a controversy. What is the truth?
@@leemcfall4344 The song was written by Michael Peter Smith. ua-cam.com/video/lGfz7clIDNw/v-deo.html
Michael Smith wrote it and sang it to Clancy who would then go on to sing it.
