  • This last installment of the Gel Printing and Mixed Media series is quite a long one. As I got into the recording of the clips, I realised that this could have been a series of it's own!
    Painting techniques I demonstrate in this video include Glazing, Negative Painting, Direct Painting and Indirect Painting.
    The colours that I use depend on the colours of the gel printed tissues. In this case, I used Titanium White, Indian Yellow, Quin Gold, Transparent Red Iron Oxide, Dioxazine Purple, Ultramarine Blue, Sap Green, Burnt Umber and Paynes Grey. These are mostly Golden Heavy Bodied acrylics rather than the Golden Open, which I use for gel printing. I don't need the extra drying time for these techniques.
    If you have any questions please leave a comment! Thanks for watching!

    If you ever want to have your tissue paper smooth when adhering to any surface first mist (with water) both sides of the tissue paper just before gluing onto surface. This technique will work with any paper as it allows the paper fibers to expand before adhering therefore no wrinkles. Hope that helps .

      I just tried that but my Art Spectra tissue isn't strong enough. At some point I want to try Carnival's Wet Strength tissue. From what I have seen on UA-cam, it would create some new possibilities. Honestly, though, I rather like the slight wrinkles that I get. They create some interesting texture when I glaze.

      @@KitBellArtist it is a delicate process and I have seen other artist use plastic sheets to support the tissue so it is less likely to tear. I would love to find a retailer in Australia that sells the Carnival's Wet Strength tissue at a reasonable price. I agree wrinkles make for an interest surface.

    Kit, you’re an excellent teacher and so generous with your time and talent. It was so interesting to learn abt your process, it’s fascinating. I was also intrigued with your “opaque” 3 step series prints. They, like all your others, are so special and inviting. Thank you for letting us watch as you create your beautiful artwork.

    Delighted to have just stumbled across your channel, Kit! I love your friendly and helpful demeanor, how you explain your thought processes so well, all your amazing techniques, your in-depth knowledge of different media, and so much more. I am teaching my first mixed media class to 16 arts & crafts society members in one week ... eeeek! But watching you helped confirm to myself to just relax, be myself, be helpful, share what I know, enjoy the process... and all will be well.😊 With mixed media, there's just no shortage of things to try. Right?!
    Thanks so much...that is one really beautiful piece you're creating!!

I have worked a lot with ecoprints, but I always found it difficult to add paint to them without it looking out of place, that's why it fascinated me how you enhanced your piece by carefully glazing

      I use artist quality canvas that is already primed. I use cradled panel for smaller works. Once complete, I apply a coat of Golden Isolation Coat and then a Satin varnish with UV protection.

    This is great, so detailed. Are you using watercolour?

    • @KitBellArtist
      @KitBellArtist  2 місяці тому +1

      i am using Golden Open Acrylics for the printing on tissue part and regular Golden heavy bodied acrylic for the painting part. For the glazing, i mix the acrylic with medium to make it transparent which looks like watercolour.

    Do you do anything to prepare your canvas before you start with the collage?

    • @KitBellArtist
      @KitBellArtist  2 місяці тому +1

      I use an artist quality, primed canvas. I don't add anything before collaging my layers. For smaller work, I use a cradled panel but I find them too heavy once you get up to 20x20. Once I am done with a piece, I apply Goldens Isolation Coat and then a satin varnish with UV protection.

    Was the large botanical all one piece? How did you apply it?

    • @KitBellArtist
      @KitBellArtist  2 місяці тому +1

      Very carefully ha ha! It was all one piece. I usually start at the top and apply matte medium to the canvas in a strip a few inches wide. Then I line it up and put it down. I then apply matte medium over the tissue along that strip. Then I lift the tissue, apply medium to the next strip, put it down and put medium over it. I just work my way down the canvas. There will be wrinkles but to me that is part of the aesthetic.
