  • The grandeur of two iconic railway structures on the London-Brighton Main Line where we'll be exploring the magnificent wonders of Clayton Tunnel and the Ouse Valley Viaduct.
Photographing trains entering Clayton Tunnel, stretching an impressive 1 mile 499 yards (2,066 meters), is a sight to behold. Its unique turreted and castellated north portal, complete with a charming single-storey cottage on top, sets it apart from other tunnels.
Next up, I'll photograph trains over the stunning Ouse Valley Railway Viaduct, also known as the Balcombe Viaduct. As we marvel at this engineering wonder, we'll be treated to breathtaking views of the River Ouse valley in picturesque Sussex. Built by the London & Brighton Railway company in 1839, this viaduct is an actual work of art. Its ornate design has earned it the well-deserved title of "probably the most elegant viaduct in Britain."
Join me on this railway photography journey as we photograph trains and capture the grandeur and historical significance of these two iconic railway structures, from the trains entering the fascinating Clayton Tunnel to the trains running over the architectural brilliance of the Ouse Valley Viaduct.

Many thanks, Chris, I've driven down to Brighton many times, and this was the first time to take the diversion and visit the Viaduct, yes, I was lucky with those horses.

Thanks Mark, yes, we certainly don't build things like that viaduct anymore, it is incredible both scale and architecturally.

Another great video Andrew, with some great photos. The horses made great foreground interest at the viaduct, I always enjoy travelling over it. You did well at Clayton too, not much room for pedestrians and the road is rather busy isn't it. Keep up the good work!

Many thanks, the viaduct is stunning, I can see why its such a popular location to visit, Clayton is a bit tight composition wise, especially with the foliage.

Good morning Andrew you could have called in for a brew whilst on your expedition. The viaduct is also one of the busiest so is always worth a visit and useful walk. Nice video.

Many thanks, Peter, a busy spot with both people visiting (I was surprised considering it was a weekday) and the amount of trains (considering it was a strike day).

Some great pictures - a drone would have been perfect for the Viaduct pictures just to get that extra elevation and get the tracks on view 😀

    • @AndrewShenton
      @AndrewShenton  8 місяців тому

A drone would be good, although there's a sign on the path towards the viaduct saying 'No Drones' who enforces that I've no idea.

Some superb photographs. Too bad the train photobombed your pictures of the horses, but it did work out rather well in the end! The Balcombe Viaduct is majestic and your use of the telephoto lens really highlights its beauty and scale. Great work again, Andrew. Cheers, Ian

Andrew, I love the southeastern 377, it’s been my favourite train for years! I’m so happy you have done a video on them, got to love the Gatwick express & the Thameslink 700’s. ☺️☺️

Some incredible photos Andrew! I’ve just discovered your channel and I love it!
I want to get my own camera and lens as I love rail photography, but although I know about cameras I don’t know much about lenses, may I ask what lenses do you use / what do you recommend?
    A brilliant video!

Many thanks, camera gear is so difficult, all depends upon what you want and budget, in my experience a great lens is better than a good camera. I use Canon L series lenses and i've been very impressed over the general kit lens. You can get some great camera and lens gear 2nd hand on some of the photography exchange sites MPB springs to mind. If i was starting again, id get a second hand gear dated from a few years ago.

I’ve gone with a Nikon D700 (got it a few weeks ago) and it’s brilliant, such sharp and crisp photos! I can also use it with my Dad and Great-Uncle’s lenses!

Great work (as always Andrew) some fantastic images of the Viaduct. I remember walking to that location from Balcombe station, worn out when I got there! The compression of the arches underneath is amazing though. Keep up the great work Andrew, I’m off the Knaresbrough next week, inspired by some of your images. Fantastic work 😊
