This video is certainly a powerful argument for the lug sail, although it looks to me that they are not pointing higher than a close reach, still quite a way from being close hauled

Sailing in the company of other sailboats always seems to magnify the enjoyment of sailing.

David, thanks for the comment. In comparing Phoenix III with Periwinkle there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, the volume (and therefore weight, cost, and difficulty to manoeuvre on land) go up according to the CUBE of the linear dimension. So, boats get big fast! Secondly, Periwinkle was designed to be sailed fast, by a crew who had some experience. The forward sections are quite fine and the entry sharp - the aft sections are wide and flat for a boat of her style. When sailing in heavier conditions, the crew weight needs to be moved aft, and the boat needs to be sailed on an even-keel in order to perform.
The amidships mast location works very well using the 104 sq.ft. Balance lug main, but as you can see from the video, the same sail can be left in the forward mast partner, and be used as a standing lug. If you can send me an email to r.lillistone@gmail.com I'll give you more information and some sail-plan drawings. Ross Lillistone

Hi Ross, nicely done! I am very much on the fence between Periwinkle and PIII. The Periwinkle is growing on me fast, given that I'd like to keep open more social sailing and will not likely row solo except in a dead calm or while mooring perhaps. Have you ever drawn a nicely sized balanced lug for Perwinkle with multiple reef points. I see myself as using such a rig in the amidships position. Many thanks for all you do! Is Perwinkle still beach-able by one reasonably fit person? Best, David
