Asterix for Sega Master System - Review | hungrygoriya

  • Asterix is a PAL exclusive platformer and one of three games based on the iconic French comic series released for the Sega Master System. The game is very good with a few rough patches but was overall a very pleasant experience. I also loved a lot of unique aspects about it like being able to play as either Asterix or Obelix and the changes that my choice had on level layout and difficulty. It was a very different experience! 🍖
    The introductory animation and outro text were created and designed by Saad Azim.

      I'm only slightly familiar with the Asterix series having grown up in Canada, and knowing how popular it is with French-speaking folks, I'm pretty shocked that these games didn't make it here.
      I hope you get to try this one out sometime. It's definitely a solid platformer apart from the levels that'll make you want to tear out all your hair. I'm curious to see what the other Asterix games are like too! Thanks for stopping by!

      @@hungrygoriya A good reason is that it would be absolutely impossible to translate. A lot of the humour is carried by the words. Just the name of the characters would be a problem, and very often there is a joke associated to the name. It's a general problem with comedy.

    • @hungrygoriya
      @hungrygoriya  3 роки тому +1

      @@migueldias8546 Yeah, I can understand a little bit of the humour being lost in translation, but just as a game on its own, it's good even without the potential limitations with language.

      This is one of the best and most honest reviews of the game I've ever seen.
      I remember a friend lending me the game after I'd watched the Asterix Versus Caesar movie, and was stunned to see how the climax from that movie made it into this games final curscene. that was a truly nice touch.
      The music in the game is gorgeous too. I agree that the music in stage 6 is pretty bad, but apart from that, most of the soundtrack is amazing, especially stage 4-1.
      For me, my only gripe with the game is the limited number of bosses. Asterix and Obelix have travelled to many places, so enemies from those places could have been added to this game to give each closing act a bigger challenge. stage 6 is a pirate ship, but the pirates who feature regularly featured in the book do NOT appear here. they could have done something with that.
      The game also needed a final boss.
      As for your review, it's a shame you didn't mention the Dogmatic bonus game, but I guess you got to leave something out to surprise new players who might try this game based on the review.
      If I wasn't already a fan of the game and had never played it before, this review would have convinced me to try it out.

      That part was the absolute worst. After you figure out what to do there it's not too bad but the learning curve for me was a steep one. You can press forward or back to speed up or slow down the platform, but it keeps going up and down at the same pace. It wasn't something I would've thought to do. And for that spring, I must see. That said I really wish I had got to experience Asterix when I was a child so I could have some nostalgic connection to him instead of being a johnny-come-lately.

    Great review! After finally beating this one last night I can confirm that level 6-3 is the hardest of the game. I spent nearly a full hour on this level alone in the playthrough and somehow managed to open the door without actually collecting the key (I broke the jar but didn't grab it before jumping back on the platform). I really liked this one though! The multiple paths for exploring and also the level changes between characters were a neat mechanic. The games unique uses of items when interacting with the environment (red potions in water create platforms / red potion in the cannons shoot you out) were really cool features that I felt gave this game a little more uniqueness.
    Regarding the sequels, I did play a little of the third game in the series (Game Gear port) and I think you may like it. I haven't beaten it yet but there are a lot of similar gameplay styles and also some added abilities :)

    5:53- I lost so many lives before I figured out you could slow down the platform instead of only jumping round the spikes while riding it! That and the Hard Dogmatix bonus level were the most anxiety inducing parts of the game!

    • @hungrygoriya
      @hungrygoriya  4 роки тому +1

      I had no idea you could slow down or speed up the platform either for a little while. I was streaming the game and someone was kind enough to tell me. Thank goodness!
      I never got into a single bonus level that whole playthrough :( It was my first time playing and I was awful and kept dying. I don't think I ever got enough bones.

    • @becca545
      @becca545 4 роки тому

      @@hungrygoriya I do remember grinding for bones in the earlier levels- going back to a couple of respawning enemies that dropped items after punching them. Because I knew I needed lots of lives for the ship and Egypt levels. Continues put you at the start of the level, but there were some points you really didn't want to redo if you could help it.
      The Dogmatix stages were all pretty tricky- popping coloured bubbles for points. Certian colours needed more than one jump to pop, and the screen was constantly moving right so there was no room for mistakes. The harder the level, the higher the bubbles got.
      I was then and still am a massive Asterix fan, so this was my favourite game for a long time. And graphically and gameplay wise- even compared with the 16 bit fare around then- this holds up far better than the Megadrive and the Snes Asterix games. The best has to be the Konami Arcade one- but that never got a port :(

      @@becca545 Oh there were definitely a few parts where I wanted to bang my head against the wall because they were so frustrating! Grinding for bones probably would've been a fantastic idea... when I replay it, I'll probably try that.

    • @becca545
      @becca545 4 роки тому

      @@hungrygoriya That's interesting- I only know Great Rescue as a Megadrive/Genesis game. From what I remember it wasn't great I'm sorry to say- at least the Megadrive version- the master system might be better. It was a time when SMS games would be very different from their Megadrive equivalents. Like this one it was a platformer, but it looked like it was made by completely different people.
      However there is a sequel to this original Asterix game- "Asterix and the Secret Mission". It has a similar graphical style- a few cute extra animations- and includes new power ups- including the actual magic potion for Asterix so he can punch through walls instead of blowing them up! I'd still say the original was the better game overall, if frustratingly harder at times, but Secret Mission is definitely worth a look. It was available for Game Gear as well.
      I remember playing the nintendo renditions of Asterix- particularly the Snes ("Asterix" and "Asterix and Obelix"- I just realised there were two, but they were both pretty similar-the main difference was with latter you could play as Obelix) and Game Boy versions but they felt a bit to much like generic platformers (the Snes one felt a bit like Bubsy?) and didn't have the charm of the master system two.
      The Konami Arcade version was an actual beat em up a la Streets of Rage or Final Fight with graphics, scenarios and fighting moves straight out of the comics! If Konami actually bothered to port it to a system, it would have been the best incarnation hands down.
      There are other games after that, but they were after my time as a regular gamer -Power of the Gods for the Megadrive, and Paf By Toutatis and XXL for the Game Boy Advance.
      But definitely get Secret Mission if you can and if its not too expensive!
