  • After modifying our Virtual Boy for RGB AV out, I played through Virtual Boy Wario Land and enjoyed the unique, albeit difficult to control platformer. It was very quirky and weird just like Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3. 🍖
We installed the Furrtek Virtual Tap mod. More information is here: furrtek.free.fr...

Oh dang, switching to that original Game Boy color palette is really smart. I played this in black and white and I wish I'd done this instead. And I agree the controls do feel a bit backwards. Thanks for posting

I was actually lucky enough to grow up with a Virtual Boy (my mom got it dirt cheap on clearance at a Blockbuster) and I really do love this game, even though it's easily the weakest Wario Land title.
It's also an actual crime that not this nor any Virtual Boy titles have seen any kind of rerelease at all! I mean, the 3DS was practically begging for it

I saved up money as a kid and bought one these. I only had a few games. Mario tennis, Teleroboxer (came with the system but was definitely fun) and this game. Wario Land was the entire reason I got the Virtualboy. All the reasons you gave for disliking the game was why I loved it. It was hard. You had to think and you had to plan. This was no simple A to B Super Mario level. There were stakes at play and I loved it. With each play through, I learned and got better. This wasn’t just a game to beat. This was a game about struggling to the end and learning how to do it better. Also, the final boss probably would have been easier to defeat on the actual visor. The final boss is located between the foreground and the background which is displayed better on the original hardware. At the end of the day, I love this game. Wario Land VB was Nintendo's attempting to push the 3D depth to its limits but I feel like they dragged it out and made it the star of the show instead of balancing gameplay mechanics and level design. I don't feel like the game is too long because it does allow saving, but I do see the flaws. Still a worthwhile game in the small VB library. I originally owned WLVB for the Virtual Boy back in the day and I never completed the game, I would love to on original hardware if I could just get a VGA out VB with swap able palettes and both screens displayed. The Virtual Boy failed because it wasn't a social system, and Nintendo should have provided TV output and it would have sold reasonable well if they went that route.

She didn't RUN which affected her ability to play it efficiently and skillfully (imagine playing a super mario game and not running?? yeah.. same thing). @@hungrygoriya I looked around a bit and holy crap! I didn't know it cost that much to get your hands on a copy these days! I think I bought my copy out of the value bin at Best Buy in the 90's for something like $5 or $10! 😂😂
Well, spoiler: its inferno level hot garbage wrapped up nicely in grey plastic. I played it for like 30 minutes in total. I think i used it as a coaster on my coffee table for a couple years. I kinda regret that now... 😂

Out of curiosity, what VB games do you have? I SHOULD (hopefully... maybe...) be able to find mine in my storage room if you'd like to do a review on something I have but you don't... If you wouldn't mind sending them back to me afterwards. I still have my VB in it's original box. I SHOULD (hopefully... maybe...) have the cartridges in there.

@@thetinpin Ohhh nooooo! I hope it's still in relatively good shape overall! But nice that you got it for a good price back in the day.

@@thetinpin I have Wario Land, Mario Clash, Teleroboxer, Golf, Mario Tennis, Galactic Pinball, 3D Tetris, and three Japanese games: V Tetris, the Bomberman puzzle game whose name escapes me, and Vertical Force.
That's a very kind offer, but I think the way things are right now with shipping being ridiculously slow and expensive (I'm in Canada), it might not be worth sending things off this way. I do appreciate the sentiment though!

Nice video, where did you mod your virtual boy? Would be possible to give me the contact information of that person ? Thank you.

We ordered a Furrtek Virtual Tap mod and my boyfriend installed it for me. Furrtek has since stopped producing the kit, but if you go to the link in the description, they've listed some other suppliers that are producing it now.

Why pronounce it Merio but not Werio? lol. I think they should be pronounced the same since it's only a letter difference

I don't see you running a lot in this review. It may be why you died a lot. It's like a Mario game... You need to run to have momentum.
Also, the final boss is the worst part of this game.

Running in a Mario game? Hah!
But yes, I did realize that after the fact. They mapped run to the shoulder buttons which was not at all intuitive, and I had almost completely forgotten existed.
