So when I decided to leave the oil and gas industry and venture off on my own trying to spread this ancient knowledge of horsemanship to the world, starting in my area in the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi, the third equestrian facility that I approached with my services was going to be a turning point for me.
My goal was to show them my skills and strike up a deal where I could work with a few of their horses. The approach was to secure a demo, free of charge, where everybody could watch me work with ANY of their problem horses.
They gave me that opportunity however surprised me when they brought out this young unbroken, wild Arabian mare. They told me she was extremely explosive and had had some major difficulties when trying to show her at Arabian beauty shows. She was just too wold and too strong, they said.
So I decided that I would start the process with her and see how I far I got. I was very happy to see that by the end of the 2 hrs of working with her, she was calm, respectful, trusting and allowed me to get on her back, walk, trot and canter, change directions, slow down, speed up, go left and right. She had her first ride.
After the demo ended, the owners told me to think big, and showed me a spare plot of land on their facilities. They said that they would happily give me this land and help me construct a facility specifically for working with troubled horses, or young horses, and also to teach people these skills. Skills that I believe are essential if you are going to be involved with horses in any way, shape, or form.
The total investment from their end was around $100,000!!!!!!! After only a couple of hours of work! Wow! a dream that had come true quicker than I expected.
Anyway, here are the steps that I took to make sure she had a successful first ride.
Step 1: Establish respect. Roundpenning. Get her to move in the direction I ask, left or right, make sure I can control the way in which she changed direction (into me rather than away from me), get this changes to be consistent, and then get her to stop and face me. She eventually respected me and had enough trust to follow me around at will with her head lowered.
    Step 2: Establish trust
I desensitized her to my whip, plastic bags, tarps, and also exposed her to the lasso around her flank until she no longer felt the need to fight it and was happy to stand still.
    Step 3: Saddling
Since I had already desensitized her to many things, the saddle was no big deal. Threw it on, let her wear it as I did some basic lunging with her.
    Step 4: Mounting
Now that she was totally calm, it was time to desensitize her to myself! gradually building it up until I could confidently put my foot in the stirrup and hop onto her back with any need for restraining her.
    Step 5: Sack of Potatoes
I asked an assistant to Roundpen the horse while I was on her back. The goal is for the rider to stay out of her way and get her comfortable at round penning with a new feeling on her back. It didn't take long for me to get comfortable on her.
    Step 6: Start riding
At this stage I felt that I had built up the lessons for the mare in a logical manner and the results were obvious. She was respectful, willing and trusting. She was in the perfect state of mind to learn, and for me to take over and just start riding. Remember, on loose reins and if you do pull, use one rein at a time. Its safer for you, and easy for the horse to understand.
Step 7: Get off and check
Dismount and walk away and see if she was more connected to me or less connected to me after the ride. If it was a negative experience then she would be less likely to follow, if it was a positive experience she would want to be stuck to my side. She stuck to my side. I also got back on her a couple of time to make sure that there were no gaps in her trust. She let me mount her as if she was the an old school horse.
Hope you guys found this interesting and thanks for all the new followers.
    More posts coming next month.

I honestly prefer your method over Clinton Anderson's because you're waaay less aggressive. I think you've done a great job, but personally i would have been sweeter with the plastic bags on the stick. Horses are curious animals they like to explore their surroundings and to learn new things about it. I would have let her sniff the bag, get her interested on it and aware of its presence, give her a little bit more time and then desensitize her with it. It maybe is a slower methot, but at least it's way less stressful for the horse and the result is the same.

Agree on what you said about the plastic bag. Give 'em time! It's not necessary to do it in one go or even day!

Excellent work I hope you making money. It's good to see you are using a fiador. So many people in western US are letting the heel knot rest on the chin which counter productive. You're doing everything correct I hope you are still in business.

I see a resemblance with Clinton Anderson's way of working :) Including the halter and saddle. Great job though..!

Elite Horsemanship hi Amru, Ill be in the UAE for a few days next week together with my wife, before we head back home to The Netherlands. I’m a fan of your techniques and the way you apply & teach them. We would love to drop by your facility, just to say hi. Would that be OK? Best, Marijn
