  • "Plane Talk", an AT&T film about communications & air travel, is one of the best of this type. Don't miss the KLM/VIASA CV-880 at Miami, plus B-720 undercarriage is included during the arrival. Like most Jerry Fairbanks productions, this is quite entertaining, and a really great period piece. Thanks to the Rick Prelinger Archives. Be sure to check my channel for the best in VINTAGE & RARE airliner videos!

Fun to watch. Air travel really was a different world in the 60's. In many ways so antiquated by 21st century standards, but also so much classier and more civilized than today.

Here is another big thank you for posting this classic film! All of the scenery brings back so many great memories. After joining the USAF that year I went on to meet my future wife (of now 47 years) in a little southern church at a Christmas party.

Check out the scene at 3:45 when the passenger asks if he can get on an earlier flight. If you asked that question now days, the airline person would say "Earlier flight? Huh, you're lucky you're are getting on this flight!".
Or they would say "I can get you on the 3pm flight instead of the 7:30pm one for a $200 change fee, plus the difference in fare which is $450, plus $25 per bag, plus a $10 up charge for the cramped middle seat I'm giving you, and finally, don't forget to put 25 cents into the oxygen mask above your seat or it won't fall in case of a sudden change in cabin pressure."

I live in Ottawa where there are flights to Toronto with Air Canada every hour. I once got at an airport a little early and Air Canada made an announcement that passengers booked on a later flight can get on one that was soon departing. It's a smart move for airlines as they free up later seats that they can sell. So they were able to get my checked bag on the earlier flight and then have it transferred over to my connecting flight. The flights were on time, and my baggage made it all the way to my destination.
A few years later I was in Toronto on business and I was heading back to Ottawa a little earlier than I expected. So I then requested to get on an earlier flight, but because I checked a bag they said it was impossible! My boss who was heading to Montréal, and a coworker heading to Québec City both managed to get on earlier flights because they didn't check their bags.
So I think if it suits airlines, they will request that change. But if it inconveniences them, then I am stuck with my reservation!

Or more likely the guy gets bumped from an oversold flight, gets packed in the back of another flight three hours later with a connection, then gets dragged off and tased by TSA because his briefcase slid from under the seat in front of him. All because of the dozens of people who dragged on full size luggage and stuffed the bins full to avoid the $50 fee haha

As an IT specialist of 31 years (retired 2012), I was just a kid in 1965 and what they call computers in this video just kills me. The is before the Sabre system was developed by IBM. But they had a lot fewer planes, people and flights to keep track of. So much paper and pencils and pens, yikes!

This video is more a commercial for AT&T than United or the DC-8. Most of the rhetoric is about telephone lines and switches providing data and voice communications for aviation in general, I worked for AT&T and still remember some of the equipment shown hare.

I love the little plastic pieces that the radar operator moves across the screen to follow each aircraft as it passes, And all of that paper...where is all the tons and tons of the dispatch paper that was generated by those printers being stored?
