    This system looks like it would be useless against drones with encrypted spread-spectrum radio remote control

    • @schweizerd6303
      @schweizerd6303 4 роки тому +11

      Yes it would be so easy to defeat with encryption even something like 56bit DES would do. The drones that can be intercepted likely just work using a simple bit code with some simple modulation like BFSK / ASK / OOK similar to garage door openers that can be cracked in seconds, or vulnerable to a replay attack.

      @@schweizerd6303 he also said including a spread spectrum so he is correct most drones use 2.4 or 5-5.8 GHz even the presenter said that if the drone has not been registered then it might not detect the model and might not be able to hack it but yes you can jam any drone signal.

    • @schweizerd6303
      @schweizerd6303 4 роки тому +5

      @@letsgetto1millwithoutvids He is correct, what I meant was the interceptor has to actively communicate with the drone to command it. That means it must know the protocols used everything from the timing to the framing and bit patterns. If it is encrypted then even if they know the protocol it would be useless since they do not know the key. That is why they need to know the model, every model speaks a different protocol. You are correct in that you can jam any drone signal encrypted or not, but that is not the same as intercepting. Jamming is more like a DDOS Attack, where you drown out the signal so that no transmission can get through to the drone, but you would not be able to tell the drone to do certain specific things. To jam spread spectrum all you have to do is output RF in the entire range of frequencies to jam all the channels it hops over. The drone owner will lose control, but the person doing the jamming cannot tell the drone to come to them. Hope this makes sense.

    • @letsgetto1millwithoutvids

      @@schweizerd6303 yes I know this but as you said it must know the protocols but there are people why have built their own drones with raspberry pi and Arduino and off market hardware that won't be hackable as you said because it won't know the protocols so it won't do every drone but I am saying at the same time the easiest attack would be to just jam the drone, and while taking the drone down by jamming does require a very focused point you can easily jam the camera signal with a small battery operated portable jammer. You could use the hack RF one portapack or even build one yourself for under $20 using a 555 timer and and a 2.4 / 5 - 5.8 GHz transmitter. This would only work on the camera feed as the signal would not be focussed enough unless you build one with huge antennas but would defeat the purpose of being portable.

  • @potato2941

    I'm "assuming" the connection between the drone and the remote is unencrypted that is why they can "hack" the drone. However over time people are just going to wise up and "encrypt" the communication between the drone and the remote. This "solution" is going to be only good for a short while.

      My self built drone is already immune to this as it falls back on 3G when the main signal is jammed or interrupted. I could give it waypoints and commands over the internet and it would complete the mission regardless. Jamming the entire usable spectrum is almost impossible.

    Listen up! No one owns the airspace, but the FAA, period! States, counties and local municipalities may have their own drone rules and regulations, but they CANNOT go against federal rules and regulations regarding drone usage. Rule of thumb: Know Before You Fly! In my state of Texas, the state has pretty much taken over laying out the rules and regulations of where and when you can fly your drone. It's fairly straight forward to understand. Above all, be responsible! Register your UAS (if it falls under the requirements to do so!). Don't fly over people. Don't fly from a moving vehicle. Don't fly near an airport without proper and appropriate clearance from ATC. Don't fly near any type of ongoing emergency (fires of any type, disaster areas, police emergencies, etc.). Don't fly over sporting events or venues. Don't fly anywhere near a prison. Don't fly around oil, natural gas, or any other type of energy production equipment or facility. Don't fly under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Don't fly near other aircraft that may potentially be in your vicinity. Stay below 400 feet and within visual line of sight of your drone at ALL TIMES. Do your research, and Know Before You Fly!

    So are you saying that this thing will steal my drone or are you saying that it's not okay to fly an airliner over your home. The big question is who regulates Air Space. Before you buy this system you need to research these questions. Even if a drone is invading your privacy, it doesn't give you the right to steal the drone. The drone pilot may get a citation for some city ordinance violation but you could go to jail for theft of property. Call the police to see whether a violation is actually taking place or not. Air space is a tricky subject. It's more about safety than it is voyeurism. Another good place to start is the FAA. Know the rules. Drones are not allowed to fly over people or put lives in danger. So your complaint should be in the form of a concern for safety. Also, you would really be in trouble if I had been granted permission from the FAA to fly in the area and you stole my drone. Again you cant steal my drone just because it makes you uneasy. Also, you do have an expectation of privacy but you have no idea if my camera is on or I'm just flying over your house on my way to film something in the public domain. My camera may be off. Never assume. Again, if you take control of my drone its the same thing as stealing my property. Don't think that I wont call the police on you and when they give it back to me, I will demand that they do their job and arrest you for stealing my drone. This video is also a CNBC Fake News piece. It's not worth the risk of getting yourself into legal trouble because you saw it on the FAKE NEWS.
