    You know Emmy those oatmeal cookies can be used to make alternative meals, for example they can be eaten with either cheese spread or a spoonful of jam or honey, if you crush them they can be cooked into a type of porridge or by adding some melted butter it can used to make a base for a cheesecake or tipped into a pot of stew they will thicken it to make a meat dish that can be carried in the hand for eating on the move in an urgent relocation. The Army Catering Corps have a competition with every course that they run , where the students are split into small groups and challenged to produce the best meal they can using only the contents of the ration packs and the equipment that they would normally have in the field. The judges are usually the course instructors and senior officers, but sometimes they also invite chefs from local restaurants or celebrity chefs when possible.

    Interesting fact about Stevia. I once wondered if you could use a leaf to sweeten tea, so bought a plant, placed a couple of crushed leaves in my cup as it steeped. It was definitely sweet tasting, and not as funky tasting as the processed powder. About 30, or so, minutes after that cup of tea, my sinuses began to swell, with no obvious cause. Decided to Google Stevia plant allergies and discovered it's a member of the ragweed family. Yep, one of my identified allergens! Didn't make that mistake again!

      They're not great. Now they have a bunch of options. When I served in the Marine Corps in '96, we had limited options. The best one I had (dont think they make it anymore), was the ham slice. Alot of Marines hated it, but I thought it was good. The dessert and chocolate doesnt taste what we get in the civilian world. Theres a off taste, gritty. The freeze dried fruit was always good. The crackers have the same gritty taste. Peanut butter tasted off too. The cheese spread was pretty good

      You can buy all kinds of ration packs online, no need to go into the services, though avoid the US MREs, they're so heavily preserved that they just taste rank, my most favourite ones are lithuanian and latvian ones, their traditional cuisine style meals just taste so nice, haven't tried others cos the surge in MRE tasting videos has made them somewhat expensive... :P

    The brightly colored drink mixes in the US mre is so that if you have to use less than desirable water (in color) it doesn’t gross you out. It kind of hides the yuck. Obviously you’d boil said water, but the dyes cover up the real color of the water. My nephew was a Sgt in the army, that’s what he told me anyway.

    I'm an old vet... I've eaten American military field rations from 3 or 4 different wars. The oldest were the K-Rats, probably from the Korean conflict. They didn't leave much of an impression on me one way or the other. The C-Rats I ate were very good in my opinion. (probably Viet Nam war era) Of course there were rations that were universally hated... The ham & eggs were dubbed "Green Eggs & Ham". They were awful. But the beef stew was great, as was the pasta with beef sauce. It had shredded roast beef in the sauce. With both K-Rats & C-Rats, they came in a cardboard box & contained cans for the main entrees. They also had little can openers that you could put on your key ring. The small ones were designated P-38 & the large ones were called a P-51. If you got lucky, you got a blued steel P-38. It would never rust. The larger P-51 was made of tin plated steel & they rusted badly. The rations had the usual accessory items, the powdered beverage mixes, cookies, crackers, jam or cheese spread, salt & pepper, gum, TP, spork or spoon, etc. But what set K-Rats & C-Rats apart from MREs was the fact that they also contained cigarettes with matches. Yes... The small pack of cigs had 5 cigs in it. It could be any brand of cigs too. I've gotten Lucky Strike, L&M, Kool, Camel, Marlboro, Winston etc. (in C-Rats) I've also eaten a wide variety of MREs. The best part, in my opinion, was the tiny glass bottle of Tobasco sauce. You can kill the funky taste of anything if you put enough Tobasco sauce on it... Life in the military was often an adventure.

Which is why I hope it always remains an option to either choose sugar or sugar-free in drinks, unfortunately here in Europe they've been sneakily trying to push making stevia or other sweeteners a default and I'm not a fan.

    Here’s an authentic Bolognese recipe Emmy!
    4 large carrots
    4 large celery stalks
    1 large onion
    1 package of chopped pancetta
    1 tube of tomato paste
    1 - 28oz can of San Marzano Tomato’s
    2 cups of red wine
    1 bottle of Pasatta(strained tomato’s)
    1lb of ground beef 85%/15%
    1lb of veal
    1lb of ground pork
    1 liter of chicken broth
    Olive oil
    Salt and pepper to taste
    Sofrito: The sofrito is the base of the sauce, in a blender chop the carrot, celery, onion and pancetta until you get a very finely chopped consistency. Add this to a deep pot with olive oil and sauté this for at least 8-10 minutes and season as you go to draw out the water.
    At this stage you can prepare the meat, brown the beef to get rid of excess grease, but not necessary for the pork and veal. Once your sofrito is sautéed, add your meat into the pot and break it up and continue to sauté, continue cooking until the meat begins to cook throughly.
    Next add the tomato paste and cook it out for a few minutes to get rid of the sharp bitterness of the paste. Then add your red wine and allow the alcohol to evaporate. Then add your passata, stir, then add your one liter of chicken broth and San Marzano tomato’s.
    Lower the heat to a simmer and allow to cook uncovered for 6-7 hours until it has reduced and the meat is visible and liquid no longer covers the top. Then, set aside off heat for one hour to rest, then you can reheat or store and let it cool overnight.
    The result is a deep, savory Sunday Bolonese for the whole family. Serve with Papardelli pasta or any long ribboned pasta.

    Emmy, I’ve been watching you since your first born was a tiny baby. Thanks for being so friendly and consistent. I can always count on your videos to cheer me up. I found you by looking up Japanese candy kits, but the rations are my favorite videos.

    Actually I think you’ll find the big fruits are raisins, medium is sultana. At least that is what they are in Australia which usually follows UK

    • @Teeshy
      @Teeshy Рік тому +3

      Yeah, i came looking for this comment! =D Raisins are made from bigger grapes, Sultanas from medium sized grapes, and currants from tiny grapes (I picked grapes during school holidays growing up - you definitely see the difference in size!)

    • @MatthewBrannigan
      @MatthewBrannigan Рік тому

      For most of my life, I thought currants, or Zante currants as they are often called in the US, were actually dried currants, like black, white, or red - popular in Europe. Now I know they are just another variety of grape, common in the Greek islands, like Zakynthos, of which they are named.
