I live in Florida and I really didn't know that people thought we were so weird until recently.

When I was younger I lived in Florida. We didn't have a fence, but we had a large lake near the golf course. Every so often our backyard would be alligator island. After a year or so someone who just moved into the neighborhood called the "alligator hunters" (yes it was a name on their van) and they caught the gators and send them to Gatorland (so they said).
Another event is were these old guys in the neighborhood would run after teens with their shotguns for returning their dog or even looking at their house.
Another event is where a random man would run through the neighbors yards butt naked.
Another event is where a homeless man in the neighborhood threaten some boys with a [dull] butter knife.
The day I wasn't bothered by these events, was the day I knew...
I was immune to Florida.

Lol it's a pretty common threat in some areas. A lot of lakes, dunes etc have gators. The lake in front of my neighborhood did at one point && the lake on this path I walk has gator warnings signs up
Pretty much any sizable body of fresh water will have a gator in it. If you have a pool, you always do a quick check before going in that there aren't any alligators in it.

I used to work at a tourist destination in North Carolina, and I met a lot of Floridians. I engaged in small talk with many of them and asked about their state's reputation. Their comments tended to fit into one of three theories:
1. Florida is weird because of all the retired people who come there to live (and their adult children who depend on Mom and Dad for money/a place to live).
2. Florida isn't any weirder than any other state; Florida news media just reports on more of the weird stuff that happens.
3. Florida's just that weird.

So, I live in Florida, and I once was driving I275 and was making frustrated gestures at the car driving like an ass in front of me when the rear passenger window rolls down and a massive teddy bear head pokes out and turns to stare at me (mind you, we're going like 70mph). And I was like. Wtf. This wasn't a big stuffed teddy bear, it was someone in the back seat who decided to put on a giant teddy head they had lying around and made me start cracking me up bc why have that? And why decide to just lean out the window at high speeds and move around and stare at the other cars?
Also, Florida traffic logic: car just sitting on the side of the road, maybe small fender bender? Everyone needs to slow down, stop, and stare, backing up traffic. Car on the side of the road with emergency vehicles and 10ft flames coming out of the engine? Nothing to bother about, just passing on right by at full speed, not even a bit of traffic backup.
