      I've found that the usual issue with battery operated power tools is the use of leaded solder causing the wires to disconnect from the heat of using them for long periods without allowing them to rest.
      From my 30 years of experience,
      IF you want your battery powered tools (and the batteries) to last longer, 5 minute burts with 5 minute rest periods is the best way to use them.
      It allows the wiring and batteries to cool and prevents overwhelming the solder, and will extend the life of the batteries because the lithium cells are not designed to discharge at such a high rate for long periods.

    Dean Doherty is the goto channel for tool repairs - a mine of information. He explains why some tools are not economical to repair due to parts cost and what some of the pitfalls are. Some brands are better than others on spares availability. He likes Makita tools. I would now not buy used unknown tooks - about the save risk as an Ebay Playsatation!!

    Makita WAS good 40 years ago. They are still one of the best, but not as good as back in the 80's. I have a cordless drill from them that is 46 years old and one of its original batteries was mostly usable until 2019. The other thing I like about them, is that they sell brushless motor and ESC set for failing units. But I use it daily because in low gear setting, it CAN still break my arm if the bit is stuck. I got this for free from my ex boss, and I refurbished its batteries, they use Li-Ion batteries now, as it is 7.2V, and the conversion was easy, as well as the modification of the charger. I also like HILTI and Milwaukee, and Hikoki(formerly Hitachi) tools, because they are very reliable and durable,I just can't afford it.

    Excellent video as always ,new power tools can be expensive so the used fix it up repair is better. Also a great investment .Personally i stick with corded tools . The switch with a latch is commonly refered to as an interlock ,some devices may have several interlock triggers in series to be pressed before the item operates. You should wear a white jacket with Cod3r embroidered on it. Doctor

  • @JamesWSleight
    @JamesWSleight 2 місяці тому

    A lot of people lie saying that the item they're selling has a much simpler fault just to sell the thing more quickly. I had to learn and convince myself that I cannot trust what the seller says; I have to ask what the _symptoms_ are, confirm the symptoms and try to review the possibilities _myself in my head_ before buying. It doesn't turn on at all? It can be ANYTHING. It turns on, but acting weird? That narrows the diagnostic a little bit... I didn't even suspect that these things would have a controller so even if I end up unable to fix it, at least I take it as if I paid to learn something. Then next time I'll have better chances thanks to it, whether to repair or to avoid the same mistake.

    Usually you can pop the resin in hot water to soften it. We chuck them in an open kettle in work (no lid). Then dig the soft resin out after.

    £35 for a used one (plus the spare parts) and you don't even know if you were able to fix it or not... Then you need a battery and a charger too. You could have bought a new one for around £160. Maybe not a well-known brand, but if you are only going to use it a few times it will be enough.

    • @TheCod3r
      @TheCod3r  2 місяці тому

      It's more about content for me, but Makita is a very good brand. I can buy a battery and charger for around £60 so I'm still technically winning lol

    Firstly, I would have removed the blade. Then checked the brushes. Unfortunate that it was the control module.
    Brushes are very easily changed, when they are defective they don't have much tension pressing them onto the rotor.
    I have mainly dewalt brushless battery tools but prefer Makita angle grinders on mains power.
    I have repaired/maintain a lot of power tools at work.

    The "controller " is only there to protect the battery from over-discharge and isn't strictly necessary.
    ALL 18 TO 24 VOLT power TOOLS ARE actually MADE FROM 24 VOLT DC PARTS / MOTORS.
    I have a few tools with batteries that aren't sold anymore and I have simply connected a pair of leads *using 8awg and larger to keep from melting them* to the contacts and use a pair of car batteries wired in series to supply the 24VDC.
    They are Still working better than when they were new after years of using them like that
    *if you are going to do this REMEMBER to USE YOUR BRAIN and DON'T OVERSTRESS your TOOL, ALLOW IT TO COOL down when the leads get warm or if you have used it for more than about 5 minutes without turning it off.
