I’m actually in the 1% of something now! I can totally understand why most players haven’t messed with the cargo links, it doesn’t really impact your game that much unless you want to put a lot of time in
That and they are barely worth using because they’re bad, as any factory game player would be able to tell you upon a few seconds of consideration. Without any way to limit levels of particular items being stored, each link can only reliably transfer one type of resource, one way. For how limited they are per outpost, the idea of building out an even mildly comprehensive set of outposts to generate all the basic items is just…not worth the effort. It’s half-assed and they could have done so much better by spending ten hours playing Factorio or Satisfactory.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! It was incredibly helpful and I now have several outposts spanning different planets thanks to this. It was short, sweet, and super easy to follow. Having the shopping list was a nice touch; made getting started very fast since I already had most of what I needed. 300+ hours in the game and I finally learned how to make an outpost.
Bessel III-B is a much better place for your first outpost. You can get Iron, Nickle, Aluminum, and Cobalt all in the same outpost. Vash Cowaii has a video explaining how to find the right spot and what you will need to get started. You can also find Helium 3 on Bessel III-A. Aside from that this video has some good advice.
Great basic explanation of cargo links in general. That said, the particular moon you selected, with minimal effort you can find a location with Iron, Aluminum, and Helium all together for the first outpost, removing the need for the second outpost just for aluminum. If you do that, you basically make this single outpost your main to branch out to the rest of the galaxy (using inter-system cargo links). You need helium for fuel at every outpost where you intend to use cargo, which you can ship out from this first base.
That’s a fair point. I probably should’ve spent a couple extra minutes showing this but also wanted to demonstrate that it doesn’t really matter especially while you’re getting the hang of outposts. But totally agree with you and appreciate the call out :) thanks for watching!
Would base building be better if you could just drop your resources into the transfer container and have them auto- sort into individual storage containers?
I am almost complete my first mod, I just have to finish the organic resources and I will have a set of unique storage containers, next step will be testing it.
Wow, that’s awesome that this made you want to try again. I hope it helps and enjoy giving it another go! If you run into any issues, feel free to drop a comment and I’ll try to help. Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you for this straight forward explanation. I currently am on NG3+ already and still haven't build an outpost as it looked to complicated. You make it easy to understand though and I am going to give this a shot
This video was amazing. Ive been getting back into Starfield and cant find much content like how yours is. Its amazing and a very well put together video. I wish you success and hope you continue posting
I think regarding cargo links that Bethesda should consider adding major population centers as both cargo destinations to gain experience and credits, as it is setup now, but also add them as sources to link to for buying large quantities of a resource. It makes sense, for example, to be able to create a trade link with Mars for iron instead of having to buy in small quantities or mine all of it yourself. That would make these links trade links also. It would be a nice addition.
Liked and subbed. I haven’t built my first outpost yet so this will definitely help me. Wouldn’t mind seeing videos on crafting weapon mods. I haven’t really played this game since launch but I’m looking forward to the upcoming expansion.

i was looking for this kind of video cos I'm a loot goblin and hoarded way too much resources, so much so that my inventory, my companion's, and one of my crew member's are all filled with resources. Turns out, i am screwed unless i have the outpost engineering skill to build a better storage for them. so i guess the only way is putting the outpost building on the shelf for now. Anyway, your vid is still really helpful in understanding the way it all works, definitely intrigued and looking forward to being able to develop my outposts further. for now, infinite storage case in lodge, here i come !!!🤣🤣🤣
So happy to hear it’s helpful! Outpost Engineering is a great skill for outpost building for sure. Also a very easy one to level if you have a lot of excess resources so shouldn’t be too long to unlock all the way to Rank 4 :) thanks so much for watching!
The vanilla transfer container has a storage limit so can’t be used as a reliable central hub. Eventually resources will jam at uneven ratios due to inconsistencies in production rates, or if you take different items out of them in different amounts. It’s just not fit for purpose unless you get a mod that gives it infinite storage. The proper solution would be to allow for limits on how much of each resource/item can be stored.
I'm just about to set up my first ever outpost, still not sure why I'm doing it yet. LOL following the guide as I build. but started on "Tau Ceti".... I’m so glad you’re enjoying building your first outpost! Building the complex parts is probably most useful to use towards your research computer tasks and then selling for $ where it makes sense. I could be wrong but I don’t believe there’s an official way in game to see your outputs. Once your resource line is set up though, you can sleep for as many hours as you want and that will speed up all the resource collecting and you will find you quickly max out your storage containers! If you want to move ship inventory to your base, open your transfer container and you should be able to pull from your ship! Hope that all helps and noted on the advanced guide, I will start trying to put this together :) Thank you so much for watching!
