    This is very true, I learn that same kind of diaphragmatic breathing years ago when I was learning to sing and also some years before that when I learnt to play the harmonica. Martial arts are really involved in everything. Excellent video

    My exam didn't go well, I was eager to practice karate (doing karate alone is the best way to practice it for me) Thank God I did karate today, I am relaxing now even after an exam not going well, after listening to the recitation of my religion's holy book (It is important for me) and after practising karate I finally laid my stress to rest. BTW, LOVE YOUR CONTENT.

    I needed this!
    I try but I often seem to have a problem with proper breathing>.<
    My sensei told me it was a little harder for women but I don't know if it's true.
    Nevertheless, I'm working on it.

    Yes this is very important and pushing down while doing your breathing this way will also help you with power because it helps you push your body down through the earth (imagery) and as you have said before your power partly anyway will come from low.

    Average person usually doesn't do this even when not under stress, which actually elevates their stress levels. It's best to make this a common practice and overwrite the shallow breathing altogether. Whether running, fighting, sitting or relaxing, belly breathing is better.

    First of all thank you very much for all your videos. I really use them and introduce them to my students. Even the smallest of 4 year. Never to early to do it right. I have just a question Sensei. You explain us that in Karate the breathing has to come from the lower part of the diaphragma but will this not expand your core muscles and make the muscle of your back weaker? I use to practice also Pilates and the teacher always tell us to pull the stomach and breath with the chest. Thank you in advance for your time. And thanks again for your videos.

    • @KARATEbyJesse
      @KARATEbyJesse  7 років тому +1

      andrea de maria Good question! In pilates you strive to expand and elongate your spine. Although they share some similarities, it's not the same biomechanical principle in this case.

    To achieve diaphragm breathing I suggest taking a deep breath (inhale)and then holding ones breath (stop exhale) in doing kata and try to keep that through the whole kata and at the same time using the hara (abdomens) contraction in doing the techniques...in that way you will be compelled to use diaphragm breathing to finish the kata ...Oss.

    I don't if you would ever read my comment, but I am struggling to find the right breathing technique while performing karate. I find myself out of breath even if I do it slowly (it is not a healthy condition 'cause it occurs only when I practice karate, never with other sport). I do think that trying to exhale properly, I tend to stay in a tension state with my body, and that cuts the time for inhalation. I hope you could give advices/exercises to do in order to help me improve. Oss!

    I’m not 100% sold on this.
    To breathe in to your belly will relax the diaphragm and expand the core muscles, whereas to breathe in to your lungs your rib cage will expand meaning the diaphragm does too. I do agree you shouldn’t breath with your shoulders but would be inclined to look to make the rib cage expand horizontally and up.
    Thoughts?

    im sorry Jesse san but i disagree with you on that one. You can breath through your chest and keep calm at the same time. Breathing through your belly creates a week point. If you get hit in the gut while inhaling like that, 99% you re gonna get KO'ed.

    • @joelvis65
      @joelvis65 7 років тому +3

      sardanapalos try breathing out when you get hit in the gut, that helps you withstand the bro while feeling minimum pain.

    • @kolasni13
      @kolasni13 7 років тому

      that goes without saying man..im talking about the situation you get hit while INhaling..it will hurt either way but when you re inhaling with you chest it shouldn't hurt so much as your gut stays somewhat tight..

      It's not that Jesse is wrong, it's that his video WAY oversimplified "karate" breathing. There are MANY ways to breath in karate, depending on your goal.
      One core principle of Okinawan karate is shizentai, or natural breathing. When we are physically threatened, we naturally do a shallow breath in the upper chest. This natural constriction allows us to move our internal organs away from the unprotected lower abdomen, and closer to rib cage and protected areas. Belly breathing is important for certain types of karate training, but it is not really best for combat. Truthfully, this subject is far to big for this type of video.

    • @skylercooper1283
      @skylercooper1283 6 років тому

      Cory
      This type of breathing is called Buddha breath, and yes, it is old. However, it's purpose is to cultivate feelings of peacefulness, not aggression. Hence the name "Buddha's breath." This type of breathing is important to train, but NOT a breath to train for combat.
      There is more under heaven and earth than dreamt of... in any of our philosophies. Keep training.
