  • Sutherland is home to over 1000 lochs, stuffed with wild brown trout. Many are unfished and miles from the nearest road, with a hard climb to get them! But those who make it have a chance at capturing the monster fish that these natural, limestone lochs produce.

Been hill loch fishing Sutherland for 35 years and you won't need waders and you won't want to be slogging over the hills in them anyway. Fish a lightish 11' rod with a Lord Ordie and Peter Ross, Kate McLaren, Invicta or Blue Zulu. All in big sizes.

Thanks for the lovely comments folks! It was a mad weekend and thankfully the trout wanted to play ball. Looking forward to doing it all over again next year!

While numerous the trout seem very small. Does an aftm7 Rod not mean you are over-gunned for such small fish or is your Shakespeare Rod very soft. I understand the bit about the wind but big rods and small fish are not a good combination. I have booked a cottage in Lairg early August 2020 and hope to do a bit of trout fishing but not sure whether it is fair to use such a powerful rod on such small fish?

      5wt is more than enough

Not sure why they're fishing so far out. The bigger ones often lie under the overhanging banks.

Hi, the reason I mention 6-7 wt rods is purely based on wind issues. You can easily fish with a 5wt but if you have no other options available then it's not possible to fish when the wind gets up without some degree of difficulty. My personal choice for general loch fishing is a 6wt. The agility is also a softer action rod in comparison to ultra modern fast actioned blanks. Hope you had a good time!

@@petem6354 Hi, we were fishing further out at this particular loch to reach the drop off without wading too far through the margins. I totally agree with your point but you need to adapt the tactics to suit the venue in question. Generally though, far too many anglers focus on distance...

Wildside - thanks for that. I actually plan to fish a very soft aftm6 rod that I bought in New Zealand 20 years ago.As it turned out with Covid I didn’t make it to Lairg. However this year I am heading for Kinbrace when I have finished the grouse counting on Speyside. I shall be there for the first week in August but have heard the fishing is usually quite poor then. Any advice. Also is the Naver estuary worth a day ticket in August.
      Thanks.
