    Thank you, Gregory. What was particularly helpful to me was thinking of Benny's lick -- and Jimmy's parallel/analogous one -- as a common 'shape', ie a melodic phrase that in its essential works over many changes/keys/tunes. I much appreciate your expertise.

      I believe the numbers are representing the scale degrees.
      For example a C major scale=
      1-C
      2-D
      3-E
      4-F
      5-G
      6-A
      7-B
