      I'm personally a big satin guy, absolutely abhor any type of poly, nitro, or really anything that would be considered a glossy neck. Visually I'd say the glossy look is definitely better, but from a playability standpoint it's such a night-and-day difference that a glossy neck is borderline a dealbreaker for me. I'd wager that the vast majority of people prefer a more "bare" satin type finish when it comes to playability, always been curious why anybody would like the way a new gloss feels to play

      I'm with you but I hear SO MANY people call poly glossy necks "Sticky," I don't feel that way at all. Plus, the answer to those people is, "Here is some 0000 Steel wool, Rub the back of the neck a hundred times." Which also reminds me of a joke that I will not repeat here.
      The only thing I don't like about a poly neck is that it doesn't get that eventual worn look like a nitro-finished neck, but they always look new. Even my 1984 MIJ Squier Stratocaster's neck still looks great and it was my only guitar when I was a gigging musician from 1986 - 1993.

  • @gringogreen4719

    Not angry, more not pleased that Fender basically made a Squier, slapped a Fender logo on it and sold it for 3x4 times what it would be if it had another logo on it.
    I mean, its not the first time this has happened as you had Chinese made Fenders back about a decade or so ago. You also have Squier runs made all over the world including the US. So its on brand for Fender.
    This actually brings up the same dilemma that I have for Epiphone vs Gibson debate. Would I rather have a top of the line Epiphone or a bottom of the line Gibson? I have yet to pull the trigger on a new "bottom of the line Gibson.' I would rather have the Squier Classic Vibe vs a Indonesian made Fender.
    That said I buy used guitars so that I get the most bang for my buck and I can use the difference to upgrade the Squier to taste. That's how I vote with my money.
    Now, if you pick up a Fender Standard guitar and it is your jam, buy it. If you have a connection that a Squier, another Fender, or another brand does not give you, buy the guitar you vibe with. I would suggest putting your hands on one of these rather than just buying one without trying it. This goes for any guitar brand. 😉👍✨

      @John-Laird 5 днів тому +2

      Most likely. If I understand it correctly, Fender contracts out the construction of most, if not all, of their overseas made guitars. Meaning that your 2014 Chinese Squier was likely built by and entirely different manufacturer than the new Indonesian Squiers. And different manufacturers might prefer slightly different components or manufacturing methods.

    I played a CV Tele back when they were still Chinese made and it was the best guitar I never bought. Looking at this footage, it seems like the best one is a combo of them. The real comparison would be the new standard vs. a new affinity tele, as they look more similar and have similar specs - poplar body, ceramic pickups, non-tinted neck. Out of these two, though, I'd get the CV.

      It will eventually lead to one of the following issues:
      Start bubbling and becoming unsightly.
      The adhesive will dry out, making removal difficult and leaving residue.
      Someone with OCD will notice you left the plastic on and feel compelled to remove it themselves.
      Otherwise your call.

    Love the channel Landon! Old guy here with two excellent e. guitars - USA made including '94 Strat and 2012 G&L ASAT, so I have a pretty good idea what the US standard is. Anyway, bought a the exact CV used on Kijiji a number of years ago for $360CDN.
    TLDR: Buy a CV and spend an afternoon replacing the electronics and sand the neck and you will have an amazing and amazingly inexpensive Telecaster.
    Excellent guitar from the first day but, of course, I wanted to upgrade it. From StewMac I purchased a deluxe Telecaster upgrade kit. It was about $50 CDN at the time and replace all electronics, EXCEPT the pickups, with American made stuff. CTS pots, push back wiring, Switchcraft jack, treble bleed and CRL Switch. UA-cam helped me learn how to solder, FYI - not the prettiest but it was a 1st attempt. Also replaced the bridge with a Wilkinson compensated bridge - between that and the original tuners it intonates well and stays in tune very well. IMHO that simple upgrade sounded much better to my ears and it still had the stock pickups. (FYI - others on the UA-cam have suggested that there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that upgrading all the parts of the signal chain would make any difference to the sound. I hear what I hear. LOL)
    I found there was too much finish on the neck as I really liked the super plain neck on the ASAT. Went to Home Depot, Luthiery (paint) Department" and purchased a couple brown 3M furniture stripping pads. Took a ton of the finish off with the brown pad, I mean I really went to town as the poly was thick, so it now looks AND feels like it has thousands of hours of play on it. I filed the fret ends and "rolled" the fingerboard.
    This guitar is and has been my #1 for about 7 years now. Neck feels fantastic and it sounds great. Of course, I have a couple pickups just begging to be modded in but maybe not yet.

  • @Cbcan

    I recently got a CV Tele. I started at the store with a MIM. The satin finish on the neck is nice. But I really never feel like my hand sticks on the gloss finish. Beyond that both guitars are similar. Low end parts, tuners, pickup, bridge. But they both sound good. So if you are set on a satin neck get the MIM (again I go the CV). Why would you pay extra for the Standard is beyond me.

What determines thier quality is thier quality, not thier size. It's true that a lot of cheap manufacturers have used low quality mini-pots and I guess that's where this idea comes from. The big brands have been getting increasingly more cocky with time. There is only so much you can improve until modern manufacturing can catch up and cut the price, yet the "good" guitars from big names aren't getting cheaper.
    The way to go now is to buy the "secondary" brands like Squier or even cut yourself off from that completely and buy something like a Harley Benton and just upgrade the parts you want in the future, get new pickups, upgrade the pots etc. People like Leo Fender gave us our beloved electric guitars, but these days companies like Fender are exploiting their name to reap profits for guitars that can be easily made a lot cheaper with modern manufacturing. And their budget options are not even hiding the fact they are spitting in our faces.

  • @barbmelle3136
    @barbmelle3136 5 днів тому

    From Leo: The Alpha brand parts are bigger, but they are not really better. A bag of them retails for maybe $1.70 each. The small pots are maybe 9 cents less. The Higher grade of Bourns or CTS pots would be a couple bucks more,. I would think for $200 more the fender would use the premium parts. Pick them up, play them and buy what makes you happy. I just do not see the value added for the higher price. If they both had a Fender decal, which would you buy?

  • @_Yep_Yep_

    I think that the issues with the guitar community and the Chinese Fender Standard guitars would be cured by a price point adjustment right now or intermittently throughout the year during normal "blowout" sales periods (ie January MAP exclusion period, Black Friday, Back to School sales, etc). Seems like Fender missed the "Value Proposition," where a buyer has to ask himself is it worth it while comparing the guitar to other options, by fifty-ish bucks? To the best of my ability to ascertain; the Standard has a dumpy PCbus knife switch and it is either a three of a four piece body. With respect to the wood, keep in mind these are painted guitars and that the tonewood argument is simply bullshit, so who cares as long as it isnt particleboard? Regarding the switch; i think the target demographic wont notice the tactile feel or actually play the guitar so much that they wear out the switch..because these are likely first time buyers and new players who just want in the door with a basic flagship-branded Fender guitar. I do think the switch is a legit-ish gripe, but missing the pricepoint was the real rage inducing mistake that has really bit Fender squarely in the asshole.
    Fender Corporate doesnt run their pre-production roll outs with me (shocker) so the whole Fender Standard introduction caught me by surprise. I would have expected them to follow suit with PRS and make overseas guitars of high quality and low price that come suuuper close to the American made units in spec. They clearly missed the bus by an RCH or two (depending on hair length and thickness), but boy howdy talk about pissing everyone off. Unrelatedly, im not even certain Fender can pivot off this with a price reduction if our moron president slaps tariffs on import guitars. The same moron who just got rich(er) selling Chibsons with his face on them, mind you.

    I have to say, that is the prettiest Fender standard I've seen so far. Other reviewers show them with multi colored bodies, etc. IMHO. If you want a Fender, on a tight budget, save, look on Reverb, and get a player. Nothing wrong with players. If you sound like s**t. Blame yourself. Don't blame your gear.

    List prices for CV just went up $30 CDN in the last 2 days. Glad I bought my Jag, Tele, Thinline, Starcaster and JM before this increase. So far they haven't increased the Standard from the 859 CDN. Even though the CV price went up, the only possible reason I would consider a standard would be if I really wanted that Nashville routing of the body, or the HSH that they have in the strat body. Will wait and see if the Standard goes on sale for the holidays, maybe if they were only $75 more than a CV rather than 240 it might be an OK compromise. Looks like this year I'd be better off saving for a Godin made in Canada.

I mean, PRS makes truly Fine Quality instruments in Indonesia with their fine SE series and for not much more of an asking price. Even Fender's overpriced Player series models, and beyond THAT even, aren't consistently up to par in QC reliability.
