Happy to see my reset mod is still being used and appreciated. It was a fun little project I open sourced a while back. I do like Will's Console Mod and Consoles Unleashed boards though. They're a bit more refined/easier to install than the simple rectangular one I made.
What's even more interesting about the PlayStation's history is that Sony really didn't want to make it. After the falling out with Nintendo, the board pretty much washed their hands of home consoles, and for them, that was that. If I remember correctly, Ken Kutaragi worked on the prototype in secret (with support from his boss) and was eventually able to convince the board to make the product. It's definitely interesting as you don't usually think of a Japanese salaryman as "being rogue" like that as the work culture normally pushes the idea of falling in line.
That reminded me of the story of how the blue LED was invented! Another Japanese salaryman going rogue with support from his boss (well, his first boss at least). I think Veritasium did a story on this.
You will be surprised to see how many japanese salarymen go behind the top brass's back to develop a project they are passionate about. Japanese are passionate people, and don't abandon stuff easily if they are interested in it.
And this is also one of the reasons why the PS1 was build to be as cheap as possible. Even the use of CDs was more so it could play VCDs and Music CDs. You see a similar thing with the PS2 being able to play DVDs and even having a dedicated remote for that.
Whenever you're soldering flex cables, it's a good idea to put kapton tape on the parts of the cable close to the soldering points. Even if you have experience soldering ribbon cables, all it takes is one slip of the hand or leaving the iron there for too long for the ribbon to warp or break the cable. 22:55 The PS1 Slim/PSone is smaller than your version, being almost half the size of the OG PS1.
What a fantastic project, love it. The only thing I would probably add is to make the logo rotateable (maybe via a magnet?), so that if the PS is standing, the logo is in the correct orientation. And that is it for my suggestions, this thing looks like a dream!

My work has a pretty large part of customer service in it, and the stupidity of humans is simply unfathomable, so that means that Bambu support is probably busy diagnosing issues caused by undisclosed mods or 3rd party software A LOT. The main benefit of a closed system is that you have limited possibilities for issue sources, which saves a lot of time. Thinking they will control what filament can be used is laughably stupid honestly. Nobody in their right mind would ever think that's a good idea, not even Apple would be that arrogant, and that says a LOT. My guess is that Bambu is doing this temporarily, because they notice they simply can't keep up with support. Instead of investing in more support staff, they simply decided to reduce the amount of incoming support tickets this way. Also, just because Bambu turned more towards closed source doesn't mean AT ALL that they're gonna fail. Apple has the most idiotic limitations and is more securely closed up than gitmo, yet so many people absolutely love it. I am personally disgusted by Apple because of their arrogance (doesn't make their products bad though), but for my 3D printer I'm perfectly fine with having it closed source, as long as it works well. I don't need to mod my printer to have a fancy screen, if I wanted that I would've bought an X1. I don't need to mod it to be faster, it's fast enough. My printer is a tool, not a project. As long as it does its job, I'm good with that. And finally: If Bambu goes down the route of closing everything down, it's just a matter of time before they get opened up by hackers and you can mod them just as much as you'd mod an Ender machine.
I was initially disappointed by the breaking news about Bambu (even though it would have zero affect on my own personal workflow), but it seems as if they are already responding to community feedback and making changes. I'm optimistic that support for 3rd party slicers and mods will find a way to flourish despite these security updates. It's worth noting that 12v was removed from the USB power delivery spec after 1. So if the wall adapter only supports PD 2/3 then it won't output 12v, it shouldn't cause any harm and will just default down to 5v, but it's caught me out before when using those USBC triggers. Also - I'm sure you know this, but the wires you are using to go to you ESP32 controller are way WAY thicker than they need to be.
Was it removed or is it just optional? Ive found 12v support to be spotty from adapter to adapter with no real rhyme or reason to it and that's why I include the link to the one I know works whenever I mention it. And yes haha I know, but that was the only gauge i had in many different colors

Zac I hope you tackle the Sega Saturn. I know it's not as popular as a console and I think that would make it fun, as well as put eyes on it. I just bought my first one from Japan for $80 and my ODE was only $110, so $190 for a barebones entry into the world of Saturn's awesome games for fellow hobbyists would be awesome to shine a light on. Plus the saturn really benefits from a lot of mods to offset its various issues: aging power supplies, FMV capture mods, several interesting ways to go about the ODE, internal clock battery mod, etc.
Id love to do a Saturn but I am slightly worried that because it wasn't as popular of a system the viewership wouldnt be as good. I do have a soft spot in my heart for Sega though, so stay tuned.

for future reference when not sponsored, if printing PLA, use PETG as the support interface, or do it the other way around. PLA and PETG do not fully bond to eachother and cost way less than support spools. For ABS use HIPS as that is what bambu abs support is anyways.

Not really a big deal but it says something about the company. And since almost every print job passes through their servers they can limit and lock your printer down more in the future

1:40 the discoloration is not caused by oxidation otherwise it would be discolored on all sides even in the inside which is not a case. It is caused by UV light that is why only top part + sides are discolored. Majority of plastics do that over time. 9:15 you are actually removing electrolytic capacitors and placing tantalum capacitors.
Hey man, appreciate the work done. This is 5th video I am watching you doing various upgrades, but I see that soldering skills haven't gone that far. There is a flux that can be used to decrease the melting temperature and to have better soldering for the components, also there are lots of more professional soldering irons that can be used to better control the melting temperature. During the upgrade, I saw the metal overheated or underheated causing it to look like a big spot instead of a shining ball. I think it is a great time to invest in improving soldering skills and look more like a pro.
Kinda looks like your just heating up the factory unleaded solder to remove it. But you will have a much easier time with removing components if you add leaded solder and flux to what your trying to remove it will lower the melting point of the leaded solder and the flux helps protect the board and helps keep the solder from bridging.
unleaded? i would've thought most things would still be using leaded solder back in the 1990s, over a decade before unleaded became a legal requirement
i love this vid, I am/will carry out a large number of these mods to my PS1, so it was great to watch someone else's take on it. I was looking at a replacement shell mod but more like a transparent shell rather than a 3d print (Which I did not consider, but will do now). Time to check out Zac's other builds to see what else is just as impressive as this build. New Subscriber :D
Great video! There are many things that I would have personally changed, such as preventing access to the physical controller ports, due to the fact that your mod cannot coexist with a wired controller. I would have also integrated the memory card as well, so that you only have to insert the micro sd card into the console, and not a silly adapter that sticks out. Furthermore finding a solution to combine the physical storage location (the sd card) for use with both game storage and memory storage. Could be done with a custom pcb, or maybe someone already thought of that. If I was able to source the parts found on all of the mod pcbs that you used, I definitely would have designed a pcb to house every board, rather than have many. The board for the controller ports is not necessary, as its ribbon cable could just connect to such custom pcb. There were many rookie errors in this build that I noticed, such as misnaming capacitors and cutting off the breadboard pins from the esp32… Do keep up the amazing work! I love the videos!
11:58 looks like you could ditch the whole controller pcb and connect the esp32 directly to where the flat cable connects to the mainboard of the ps1. you're soldering the wires to the connector socket, aka, the "exit" from the controller pcb. if you were soldering to anywhere else, then the controller pcb would be doing some kind of interface between esp32 and ps1 board, but looks like that's not the case. so the ps1 could probably be thinner :) anyway, great video as always!!
i just wanna say I love your videos, this stuff really inspires me as a tinkerer and I wish I had the tools to do awesome projects like your videos showcase.
The only way it could be better is if you kept the CD drive and allowed it to rip the discs itself. I don't know how you feel about emulation, but if you took one of those mini puck computers and made a custom case incorporating a USB CD drive, and installed something like RetroPie, you could automate ripping discs and just use an emulator to play the games. The only reason I suggest using a CD drive is for future expansion. If you find a game at some flea market you could load it up straight away without having to rip and transfer.
Love this old tech getting revamps , do more s2 lol - Also f you can, try to make a good Rtx GPU as little as possible, because the low profile versions are so rare this days, something like a 4090 low profile lol - Other idea is a old Motorola V3 phone with a revamp to a modern andriod phone hehe
The ps1 disc drive probably works fine and it didn’t read discs due to the modchip not working correctly with some wires disconnected interfering with the license check.
There's a small issue with the short history segment at the beginning of the video: Sony also tried to pull a fast one on Nintendo. Console manufacturers' main source of income is licensing, and Sony expected to handle CD-ROM manufacturing and collect licensing fees independently, essentially stealing Nintendo's primary revenue stream. As you said, Sony didn't just want to manufacture console hardware, they wanted to seriously enter the market.
I do have to say I also can't fully call Nintendo the victims given that they went behind Sony's back instead of just saying no to the deal. I get Nintendo not wanting Sony to have so much power in liscensing fees, but there is still the fact that the deal was something Nintendo let fester until they found someone else.
I'm glad that you really like the X1 Carbon, just please do not leave a print unobserved -especially in the beginning of the print- as if the print fails it can fail catastrophically and harm the whole print head. Recently the number of failed prints, making the printer unusable before hours of melting plastic to rescue and replace the print head completely is significantly high.
Any particular reason you retained the PSX controller / memcard ports? I also wonder what the 12V line was used for in the original PSX - it may be for something you're not using anymore.
I am curious why you wouldn't start with a PSX Slim? Is it due to needing the specific motherboard or because the mods do not support it? I figure it would take off a lot more room starting so small already.
I have been dreaming of doing a fully custom ps1 since I first learned about modding retro consoles, but I have been learning how to do these kinds of things on handhelds first, built a really gorgeous IPS GBA in a brand new custom case. Some day ill get to this one, it was my childhood :D

While you didn't say that fuzzy skin, variable layer height, and ironing were original features of BambuLab, you could mention very quickly that they already exist in other slicers. A newbie would most definitely think that Bambu developed it with the way you said it. You can still be sponsored AND transparent. It's one of things I find frustrating about his otherwise super cool videos with awesome finished products. I feel like every other video has some weird niche thing he calls out incorrectly. He's big enough, talented enough, and respected enough now that he's becoming a lot of folks keying off point for these types of things. Having someone from the relevant community (PS1 mods in this case) would really give these that very final level of polish.
I love that he always adds literally everything possible to his modern counterparts, making them just the best they can be, would love to see a modern gamecube, or Wii!
@ There's usually plenty of air in an environment. I'd wager that telling people to protect their stuff from UV light will lead to less degradation in the overall ecosystem than telling them to protect their stuff against oxygen.
@Thalanox I think the key is that UV light seems to accelerate the process. My SNES sat in a box for 20 years and came out very yellowed. Not as bad as some pictures I've seen, but it had no yellowing when it went into the box. I'm guessing had I wrapped it in plastic before sticking it in the box, the yellowing would have been significantly less. This latest UA-cam comment bug (where the name disappears for no reason when replying to someone) is extremely annoying!
@@rars0n If you want to dig a bit into the chemistry of it, the term is "retrobright", and the process was first described around 2006. Last I checked, there were only two to three formal chemistry papers on it.
I loved this project. I love when people find new ways to play old games, and honestly, I love keeping the original hardware. The two things that I would not do if the project was mine is removing the reset button and adding the bluetooth controllers. I prefer the experience as a original: you have to deal with cables and also get up and “change” your game. This is what I mostly love when playing my SNES and PS2 games. Awesome job!
Too be honest, I haven't been using it that much lately because I've been working in my office a lot. When the weather was nicer and I was outside more I got more use out of it

I don't condone piracy and own literally every PS1 game released in english and I can safely say that, yes, you can fit all of them on a single SD card, but you WILL need a 1tb model since it'd be a little over 500gb

Macho Nacho has some competition as of late. Loving all the console builds over the last year. I look over at my PSOne that I bought back in the day just sitting on display. My PS1 works but I don't have the heart to kill it. I do MiSTer FPGA for PSX games and love it.
Your PETG transparent is worth doing some testing to increase the transparency, mostly try test pieces with different layer heights, temperatures and speeds can achieve almost frosted glass look sometimes.
I can't really blame Nintendo for going elsewhere. Sony expected Nintendo to hand over rights (or at least partially) to the software on the disk, not just licensing fees to use disks. Sounds to me like Nintendo thought Sony was asking too much and I'd have to agree.
didnt bambu labs just have a huge security leak? People with a Bambu lab 3d printer, be aware that a very big vulnerability can be exploited on your printer. louis rossman just released a video about it.
you must have been half asleep watching that video, its that Bambu labs has locked out all third party tools from being used on their printers in response to another brand being hacked, basically ruined any point in getting them since you cant use community made tools anymore only Bambu's sottware.
Have you ever considered using ribbon/IDE cables to wire up these boards. It might be easier to work with than individual wires. You should even be able to peel them off so you have the exact number of wires you need.

You should also mention that with PPS it was technically added back in. Since PPS allows any Voltage between 3 and 20V.
You didn’t replace capacitors with electrolytic capacitors, you replaced electrolytic capacitors with tantalum capacitors.

Depending on how you do the layers between parts, PETG can and will stick to PLA, as many videos have demonstrated.

@@RafalBorowski They are making it harder for 3rd party access and closing down their system further now they have bought a big market share through paid endorsements and marketing. Not really a big deal but it says something about the company. And since almost every print job passes through their servers they can limit and lock your printer down more in the future

1:40 the discoloration is not caused by oxidation otherwise it would be discolored on all sides even in the inside which is not a case. It is caused by UV light that is why only top part + sides are discolored. Majority of plastics do that over time.
9:15 you are actually removing electrolytic capacitors and placing tantalum capacitors.
Hey man, appreciate the work done. This is 5th video I am watching you doing various upgrades, but I see that soldering skills haven't gone that far. There is a flux that can be used to decrease the melting temperature and to have better soldering for the components, also there are lots of more professional soldering irons that can be used to better control the melting temperature. During the upgrade, I saw the metal overheated or underheated causing it to look like a big spot instead of a shining ball. I think it is a great time to invest in improving soldering skills and look more like a pro.
Kinda looks like your just heating up the factory unleaded solder to remove it. But you will have a much easier time with removing components if you add leaded solder and flux to what your trying to remove it will lower the melting point of the leaded solder and the flux helps protect the board and helps keep the solder from bridging.
unleaded? i would've thought most things would still be using leaded solder back in the 1990s, over a decade before unleaded became a legal requirement

Why did you use GTA3 b-roll for the PS1? That was a PS2 game, GTA 1 & 2 (the 2D top down games) were on the PS1.
i love this vid, I am/will carry out a large number of these mods to my PS1, so it was great to watch someone else's take on it. I was looking at a replacement shell mod but more like a transparent shell rather than a 3d print (Which I did not consider, but will do now). Time to check out Zac's other builds to see what else is just as impressive as this build. New Subscriber :D

The drive not making any noise because of the mod is W, but in a way it changes the experience. Very convenient tho!
Great video! There are many things that I would have personally changed, such as preventing access to the physical controller ports, due to the fact that your mod cannot coexist with a wired controller. I would have also integrated the memory card as well, so that you only have to insert the micro sd card into the console, and not a silly adapter that sticks out. Furthermore finding a solution to combine the physical storage location (the sd card) for use with both game storage and memory storage. Could be done with a custom pcb, or maybe someone already thought of that. If I was able to source the parts found on all of the mod pcbs that you used, I definitely would have designed a pcb to house every board, rather than have many. The board for the controller ports is not necessary, as its ribbon cable could just connect to such custom pcb. There were many rookie errors in this build that I noticed, such as misnaming capacitors and cutting off the breadboard pins from the esp32… Do keep up the amazing work! I love the videos!

there is an internal mod for blue retro on the ps1 already, far easier than the wiring, and includes port sensing

11:58 looks like you could ditch the whole controller pcb and connect the esp32 directly to where the flat cable connects to the mainboard of the ps1. you're soldering the wires to the connector socket, aka, the "exit" from the controller pcb. if you were soldering to anywhere else, then the controller pcb would be doing some kind of interface between esp32 and ps1 board, but looks like that's not the case. so the ps1 could probably be thinner :)

The only way it could be better is if you kept the CD drive and allowed it to rip the discs itself. I don't know how you feel about emulation, but if you took one of those mini puck computers and made a custom case incorporating a USB CD drive, and installed something like RetroPie, you could automate ripping discs and just use an emulator to play the games. The only reason I suggest using a CD drive is for future expansion. If you find a game at some flea market you could load it up straight away without having to rip and transfer.

I don't think so but it has more features so I think he managed to get it small enough. The PSone is a marvel indeed and the PS2 Superslim even more.

The ps1 disc drive probably works fine and it didn’t read discs due to the modchip not working correctly with some wires disconnected interfering with the license check.

There's a small issue with the short history segment at the beginning of the video: Sony also tried to pull a fast one on Nintendo. Console manufacturers' main source of income is licensing, and Sony expected to handle CD-ROM manufacturing and collect licensing fees independently, essentially stealing Nintendo's primary revenue stream. As you said, Sony didn't just want to manufacture console hardware, they wanted to seriously enter the market.
I do have to say I also can't fully call Nintendo the victims given that they went behind Sony's back instead of just saying no to the deal.
I get Nintendo not wanting Sony to have so much power in liscensing fees, but there is still the fact that the deal was something Nintendo let fester until they found someone else.

I'm glad that you really like the X1 Carbon, just please do not leave a print unobserved -especially in the beginning of the print- as if the print fails it can fail catastrophically and harm the whole print head. Recently the number of failed prints, making the printer unusable before hours of melting plastic to rescue and replace the print head completely is significantly high.
Any particular reason you retained the PSX controller / memcard ports? I also wonder what the 12V line was used for in the original PSX - it may be for something you're not using anymore.

I am curious why you wouldn't start with a PSX Slim? Is it due to needing the specific motherboard or because the mods do not support it? I figure it would take off a lot more room starting so small already.

It's one of things I find frustrating about his otherwise super cool videos with awesome finished products. I feel like every other video has some weird niche thing he calls out incorrectly.
He's big enough, talented enough, and respected enough now that he's becoming a lot of folks keying off point for these types of things. Having someone from the relevant community (PS1 mods in this case) would really give these that very final level of polish.

The yellowing of old plastic isn't from oxidation, it's from UV damage. You can un-do the yellowing.
Is the plastic weakened by the uv tho?
It's a process of oxidation caused by exposure to both UV light and air.
@ There's usually plenty of air in an environment. I'd wager that telling people to protect their stuff from UV light will lead to less degradation in the overall ecosystem than telling them to protect their stuff against oxygen.
@Thalanox I think the key is that UV light seems to accelerate the process. My SNES sat in a box for 20 years and came out very yellowed. Not as bad as some pictures I've seen, but it had no yellowing when it went into the box. I'm guessing had I wrapped it in plastic before sticking it in the box, the yellowing would have been significantly less.
This latest UA-cam comment bug (where the name disappears for no reason when replying to someone) is extremely annoying!
@@rars0n If you want to dig a bit into the chemistry of it, the term is "retrobright", and the process was first described around 2006. Last I checked, there were only two to three formal chemistry papers on it.
I loved this project. I love when people find new ways to play old games, and honestly, I love keeping the original hardware.
The two things that I would not do if the project was mine is removing the reset button and adding the bluetooth controllers.
I prefer the experience as a original: you have to deal with cables and also get up and “change” your game. This is what I mostly love when playing my SNES and PS2 games.

Great video, I've never seen such a complete mod. The only thing missing was the part about how you change games without getting up to restart the console.
I don't condone piracy and own literally every PS1 game released in english and I can safely say that, yes, you can fit all of them on a single SD card, but you WILL need a 1tb model since it'd be a little over 500gb
the people that made those games will never see a cent from buying a used copy brother.

Macho Nacho has some competition as of late. Loving all the console builds over the last year. I look over at my PSOne that I bought back in the day just sitting on display. My PS1 works but I don't have the heart to kill it. I do MiSTer FPGA for PSX games and love it.

Your PETG transparent is worth doing some testing to increase the transparency, mostly try test pieces with different layer heights, temperatures and speeds can achieve almost frosted glass look sometimes.
I can't really blame Nintendo for going elsewhere. Sony expected Nintendo to hand over rights (or at least partially) to the software on the disk, not just licensing fees to use disks. Sounds to me like Nintendo thought Sony was asking too much and I'd have to agree.

didnt bambu labs just have a huge security leak? People with a Bambu lab 3d printer, be aware that a very big vulnerability can be exploited on your printer. louis rossman just released a video about it.
you must have been half asleep watching that video, its that Bambu labs has locked out all third party tools from being used on their printers in response to another brand being hacked, basically ruined any point in getting them since you cant use community made tools anymore only Bambu's sottware.

The soldering is very poor.
Have you ever considered using ribbon/IDE cables to wire up these boards. It might be easier to work with than individual wires. You should even be able to peel them off so you have the exact number of wires you need.
IDE/PATA cables are not made for that. your thinking of Dupont Jumper cables.
