  • It's always a good practice to check the oil in the front forks. Even better is changing it completely. It's a slightly modified 1999 Honda Transalp XL600V.

    People actually think that is necessary to take off forks for oilchanges,and this is lazy half assing.
    However there is plenty of factory service manuals of older bikes especially consumer bikes like Suzuki katana for example. They show in the manual exactly the way he showed it here.
    Unbolt the screws and caps, drain, rescrew ,replace oil, pump to fill cavities, retighten. Done.
    Its common for cheaper more rugged and less performance oriented bikes to have easier and cheaper maintenance.
    Altho deep cleaning reaps its own benefits it requires more tools and skill,also time. Where this way you would actually be more keen on doing the job sooner and more consistently which can only result in smoother ride experience overall.

    Thanks for your video very interesting an clear, good work.
    A question for you, ¿do you notice a clear improvement in the bike dynamics?. For example whith your front brake blocked, if you push strongly against ground, ¿does it a "doing, doing" movement up and down two or three times, or recuperates cleanly?. It's what happens with my XL650V but I don't know if changing forks oil is enough or I must add some preload adjustable caps, or may be replacing the springs. Perhaps all together. ¿Do you have an idea, or a friend of you?. Thank you very much.

    • @0xsergy
      @0xsergy 5 років тому +1

      that sounds like a lack of damping, maybe your forks need a rebuild? if the rubber orings are done then i don't imagine they're doing much. when car shocks do that it's time for a replacement.. That's the thing with the oils, if you don't replace them the rubber goes bad so you have to replace them ontime or extra rebuilds. lots of people neglect fork oil from what I read online.

      joking😂😂 you're fantastic
      Do you know the main role of the springs?
      The function of the springs return the shock absorber ( damper) to the top position and make a flexible motion, especially in bumpy and an unpaved roads
      So how are them motives in the air pressure plus oil
      There is air in last 25 mm that you already mentioned, so you should dispose it to prevent makes pressure on an oil seal.

    • @DonnDIY

      Nope. The best way is to read the maintenance manual developed by the engineers of the bike and act accordingly.

    • @Gio-en5kv
      @Gio-en5kv 6 років тому

      sure, but A) some people dont have it. B) if you dont take the forks out and wash them and drain them there ll always be some left behind so the amount stated on the manual can fit.

    • @DonnDIY
      @DonnDIY  6 років тому +4

      @@Gio-en5kv Once again - the same amount will be in there even if you don't wash the forks - you measure it from the top anyway so all of the old oil left behind will flow to the bottom and will be among the measured volume. But the correct way always includes washing the forks and then pouring the new oil in according to the specs, otherwise you'll contaminate the new oil with the debris and grit left behind in the old oil. Service manuals are available online, too. If you want your bike to be in perfect order owning a proper service manual is definitely recommended.
