I always considered FNaF 1's art style to be very realistic. To the point where I could see it being an actual run-down pizza diner with oddball animatronics. Its a vibe to a game that I have yet to see be replicated. Scott's style really is something special.

Pretty much why I didn't like Security Breach, since its art style is very cartoony and colorful. The atmosphere just felt too 'safe' for horror.

    • @peanutbutter6720
      @peanutbutter6720 Рік тому +109

@@Val17282 I think as the game progressed the pizzaplex should have gotten darker. Realistically they wouldn’t keep all those lights on 24/7 anyways. Maybe have certain areas dimly lit with only one color, something similar to one of the animatronics so they could blend in better. It would help make each area far more distinct and each could utilize a different type of horror. For example make Monty golf this really dark green and have Monty himself hide in the foliage with only his eyes lit up as white pinpricks in the darkness like a real alligator. Also have the shattered forms be more horror-like similar to Roxy’s. Monty just losing his legs didn’t really make him any scarier, just funny to look at.
Also, I know the lighting thing would mean moon has to be reworked a bit, but he kind of sucked outside of that first encounter so I don’t think it’s much of a loss if it meant the whole game could be scarier.

As a 32yo adult who is from the 90s, I have to say that Scott's style really does hit that vibe with me that feels strangely nostalgic and weirdly comforting. Like, it feels like playing a PC game on your parents' computer in the garage past bedtime, or the coolest new game your rich friend got from Toys R Us to show off at the sleepover. It feels like a time capsule without actually being from that time. The endos have a very late 80s, early 90s SciFi blockbuster feel to them.

As an artist who has followed FNaF since the first game's release, I've found quite a few things regarding how the artstyle is structured.
    1. LIGHTING. LIGHTING PLAYS A MASSIVE ROLE. However, there's more to it than simply setting a light source. Scott uses 3DS Max to model his characters and backgrounds, and as such, lighting in a 3D space works differently. Even with ambient lighting present, the default for 3D models is a pitch black space where lighting cuts out shadows *in* the space. I called this lighting method "Define by Shadows". Where light doesn't define shape, lighting, or even texture, but the absence of shadow does instead. How does this work? Imagine a pitch black room. Now imagine a light in the hallway, and now one light in the top corner of the room, and so on. You'll notice some areas aren't fully illuminated, but the shape of things like doorways and furniture are all still defined. To define lighting by the light sources is to say all visibility is defined by what is illuminated or clearly visible. To define by shadows means to use shadows or the absence of shadows, to give definition to an object whether or not it is illuminated or completely visible. Pair this will hard light definition and colored light sources, and you got FNaF's lighting style, my guy.
    2. TEXTURES. FNaF is huge about textures. EVERYTHING is textured. *EVERY DAMN THING IN THE EARLY SERIES (1-UCN) IS TEXTURED.* By adding grit and grime, coarseness and smoothness to everything; it further sells realism, despite realism not being the focus. The realism in textures is meant to give uneasy uncanny valley responses to the viewer. Giving the brain the impression that what you're looking at might be real enough to touch or have sensory registering to it, but not real enough to not feel unnatural or something that shouldn't, within reason, exist.
    3. DESIGN. Everything from the animatronics to the backgrounds is meant to break conventions. The animatronics look like pizzeria animatronics, yeah, but some of them just straight up look like mechanical monsters. Robots are always known to be clean and uniform, humanoid or militaristic or non-threatening in design. Cyberpunk films such as iRobot and Ghost in the Shell apply humanity to inhuman objects such as robots, thus making the machine more like man. FNaF does the exact opposite, with each murder victim once being human and now possessing a grotesque and monstrous mechanical abomination. Effectively taking humanity away from a human, and making man more like machine. Defined, not by what is gained, but by what is lost. The unnatural way the animatronics stand, move, and behave are all reminiscent of this fact. Progressively, the series moves from focusing on the pizzeria aspect of the series' aesthetic to moreso dealing with the character William Afton's past sins and the mechanical monsters born from it. All of these things are reflected in the design *as they should.*
In conclusion, Scott's artstyle is a heavily defined one that not many people know how to replicate because it's so specifically *unique.* And as such, it should come as a push to other developers to continue being creative and not falling into worn out standards.

Being from a time where I still watched stuff like VHS and went to places like Chuck E. Cheese's, even if from the late 90's and all throughout the 2000's, FNAF hit that mark with it's nostalgic art style. It also obviously matches how Animatronics were creepy, but also kept the charm that made them more endearing to those not originally super scared of them as a kid, like me.

In regards to your warehouse-of-mannequins analogy: I've said it before in reference to why the VHS scene is so popular. FNaF 1 benefits because of the aspects that make you feel like you're in a haunted environment due to the things exempt from the animatronics. The hallucinations, the changing scenery on the walls, the sudden shorts of the cameras clearly intentionally covering their tracks. It makes it feel not just like you're in a room, being hunted by massive robots, but like you're locked in with forces you can't fully comprehend or even observe, unknowing of just why they're like this or what they stand to gain from it. And you can't leave, because they clearly have control of the location and they almost certainly won't let you. The animatronics are just vessels to attack you, rather than the culprits themselves. And, as well, they aren't always attacking, despite being otherwise hostile - Chica and Bonnie sporadically travel around, wandering the building; while Foxy and Freddy keep to themselves most of the time, rarely moving from their spots either hidden behind the curtains or wholly dormant on stage, respectively. They're not fully bent on killing you, or if they are, it takes a lot more effort than had they just been robots with extra programming to do so. That is why FNaF 1 feels so much like a horror environment, and why everything since has been a bit of a downhill, whether it was focusing on characters rather than environment in 2 and 3, or science rather than paranormal activity in SL and since.
Also. Help Wanted. I could write a book on my thoughts of Help Wanted (and it would be 40% my expansions on the gameplay and 30% repeating the other 30%). You can tell the game was rushed by the models, by some parts of the gameplay (hard mode P&S, Funtime Freddy's level, etc), and by there not being full animations for a lot of things, but the models definitely show it the worst. That said, I think the reason they do is because of two things: Firstly, Help Wanted's gameplay style obviously lends a lot of leeway towards cutting out entirely things which didn't pan out during development or weren't finished; and secondly, many of the animations can be believably passed off as deliberately not lining up, particularly when covered by a light going out or a camera breaking. The models, though... they don't get that same leeway. I think the classics and the Toys were the first modeled, as while some aspects show that they weren't exactly the most skillful ones between texture and color and shape, they do have good quality regardless. Later on, the more complex ones such as Springtrap and the Funtimes got shafted completely, and I have to say that a lot of the solid surfaces on the animatronics really show their polygon counts plainly as too low. That applies to the Toys to a lesser degree, but mainly the Funtimes - and also Nightmarionne, with the mask. Conversely, the Nightmares and Withered (the latter of which were added later and so not a time crunch) look absolutely amazing, and you can tell that they got more experienced as they went. Still, a pass back over the first few models with what they learned would've been nice, although the textures on nearly everyone look a bit off to some small degree. Also, the classics look like they're hard plastic or something rather than plush, which I've never liked (and those buttons on Chica should fold her whole face up not open her beak).

FNAF 1's art style really reminds me of my time touring Aaron Fechter's warehouse. For those unfamiliar, he invented the current style of pizza place animatronics that we know today, including many whose internal mechanisms (endoskeletons to most fnaf fans) currently used in places like Chuck E. Cheese. I toured his warehouse where he housed all his animatronics. The place was dark and gritty, with huge animatronics literally all over the place. Some were kept in very nice shape, while others had rotted away since the 80s and showed massive holes (the ones who had latex masks had started to melt as well). Others were just empty robots with no costumes. It was full of 70s-80s style technology and art, and idk- the whole vibe of FNAF 1 really captures that in a way. His warehouse is like an animatronic time capsule, and I got to see some fantastic things there. FNAF 1 always brings me back to those happy memories, because of the darkness, the run-down condition, the 80s style robots, the vintage feel of it all. I think Scott did an amazing job at capturing the feeling that he was aiming for.

8:50 I can't seem to find any pictures of it on google images, but I have seen stains like that. It was in a decrepit wooden bathroom in an outdoor area. The wood seemed unprotected and old, in an area that got lots of rain and high humidity, so I assume it's some kind of mold or mildew, growing in that way because of the way the water permeated the wood, the grain of the wood, or both.
So not entirely unrealistic, though I'd be thoroughly grossed out to find those kinds of stains in the drywall of a pizzeria 😭

Why Scott's Era is darker and depends more on a grity old texture, it was bound to change at some point when we started getting into games set in modern time that's not underground facilities or horror attractions.
Especially for a place so recent, Security Breach is realistic design.
Older games were mostly set when Freddie's wasn't as big or popular and most running it were working in mostly old buildings.
But the pizza plex is new and actually has plenty costumers throughout the day in the building.
I think the plex design would be how the original Circus Baby's would've looked a bit like prior to them being reduce to a rental
Bright, clean, crisp animotronics with some creepy aspects.
I love the glamrock designs, they're fun and why not completely spooky they're huge compared to the player and start to break apart making them even spookier.

But the environments really sell the scare factor for me. The black streaks along the walls, the loose hanging wires on the walls and ceilings. It's not that it looks abandoned, but that its cheap and under low maintenance.
