I thought for a minute Seth Rogan was there
I remember selling my Avengers #1 when I was a kid. A friend of a friend collected comics, and I sold it to him for a dollar. I recall thinking I had really made a good deal off of my 12 cent investment.
RIP
@1D 1R A C U 1L A 209 !! 20/20 what
Rufus66 Does no one say hindsight is 20/20 anymore?
Hindsight. Meaning looking back after all the facts and information have been presented. 20/20. Meaning perfect vision (i.e. sight). Meaning it’s easy to see what you should have done when the outcome is known.
@@Rufus066 It means Hindsight would give you PERFECT VISION to do things perfectly.
I like the stories behind all these antiques, they are so fascinating! I love that he tells his story with a huge smile on his face. 😃
I love how this covers childhood, motherhood and adulthood in 3 minutes.
A mom that doesn't throw away valuable things that they deem "worthless"? They exist?
Olivier Armand my dad’s mom burned all his baseball cards when she cleaned out the attic a few years after he left home. He is almost 75 and still tells that story.
@@kimberlymason7080 he must of had some really good cards if he collected them as a child considering his age (no offense)
My original Star Wars toys from 1977 can relate.
Yes they do exist, you haven't met my mom haven't you????!!!
Yeah, there's plenty of hoarders out there don't worry
I just gotta hold onto those Pokémon cards for another 100 years
are you rich now?
Sealed booster packs from 1999 have exploded like crazy since covid hit. I bought a sealed Scyther Jungle booster pack at the Boston Fan Expo 2019 for $35, and my friend talked me out of buying a 2nd one. Good luck getting one for under $200 anymore. Good luck getting a base booster for under $500. They were like $100-$150 each just a few years ago.
@@Hogda 😂😂😂😂 I was gonna ask the same thing. He can’t answer right now, he’s busy on his yacht
Contact me, I will buy them.
A sealed gen 10 mint Raichu is worth like 2k on eBay now.
what a great reaction
H
It is fake
He totally expected more money for them!
Not sure why I heard 450 thousand to 500 thousand dollars for the first appraisal. That explains his anti-climatic reaction.
that's some definite super villain laughter at the end
I worked with a guy back in 87. He was a great friend. Really a awesome buddy. He LOVED the Avengers and the X-Men. He had issues #1 to #50. All of them were in amazing shape. Even #1-10 were incredible for their age. Now he also had #51-60 and quite a few more, and his goal was to have the first 150 issues. He gets them, ALWAYS uses rubber gloves and preserves them in a airtight bag. He reads them once. Then stores them. I had so many issues growing up. Back then I had 12 cent comics, 10 cent comics. I remember I traded a kid a bunch of magazines we found in a fort. He gave me a bunch of comics. 10 cent Superman, Action Comics, etc. I can only imagine what they are worth now. (Banging head on door yelling STUPID STUPID STUPID!)! I'm NOT saying I had any #1 issues, but honestly I have no clue what I had. Actually that's probably best.

I thought it was hilarious
The freaking cackling at the end 😂😂😂
I bought an almost-complete set of Nancy Drews from a flea market in the 80s for $25. They were printed in the 40s, hard, blue covers. I stored them in a storage house my Dad had built. When I left home after high school, my parents got rid of a lot of stuff and the NDs were among them!!! I can only imagine, now, how much they would be worth!!!

This guy was born to be on Antiques Roadshow
I would love to get ahold of him and give him an offer but those comics are even more valuable now and are probably sold a long time ago
We should now be in the golden age of comics 'barn finds'.
Kirby did the plots of the stories and art, not to mention kirby created these characters himself

That's it I'm quitting my job so i can canvass the country in search of yard sales!
My parents say that my great grandparent did this for almost 3 years, found absolutely nothing of major value, then died. So.... probably not a good idea.
so 3years later did you make lots of money? Lol
He said "my mom is not going to believe this!..." I would tell him, mom isn't going to believe the story of me suspiciously losing them on the way home lol
3:06 that shared laugh gets me!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
$4000-$6000.... suddenly his mind flashes when he casually tosses it around causing damage. I don’t wanna touch it now!! 🤣🤣

the appraisal of the avengers 1 is way off. Even today (more than 4 years after this was posted), in that condition (about a 3.5) it would get about $2000.
Let me guess -- you're a dealer.
Just found a sold Ebay listing for a 3.5 for $3750.00.
1st thing you should have done is get bags & boards for those books! The way you have them displayed here can only allow the possibility of causing them more damage than the wear you've already noted! Of course, this was about 6 years ago, making my comments a bit too late!
Get them officially graded ma dude.
Strange how things turn out. Our family was stationed at Homestead AFB, Fla. around '61-'62 and of course, I had a newspaper route. With some spending money available, bought comics I liked, in this case, Superman/Batman and of course, that new comic book publisher, Marvel Comics. I had ALL their issues from the beginning, though ended up mainly buying Spiderman. All were stored in a cardboard box and of course, read. Then we moved from Fla. to Calif. and I must of had a couple of hundred comics. Mom said give 'em away, they're not worth anything. I did......sigh.
The appraiser's name is James Supp. I'd be more than surprised if when he was in high school (or thereabouts), his friend's didn't greet him with "S'upp, Supp?!"
In 1969 we moved from Cleveland to DC, in the closet we had 2 footlockers fulls of comics and baseball cards ...
My Dad said "I'm not paying to move that junk"
I feel your pain..... I wont get into all the stuff I used to have. A little F**KER a friend of a friend stole 5 cards that were over $2,000. A Wayne Gretzky Rookie 79-80 Topps. A 1975 George Brett Rookie and Robin Yount Rookie Topps. A 1981 Joe Montana Rookie Topps. To cap it off TWO M.Jordan cards. One a Coca-Cola North Carolina's Finest card AND a 87 Fleer Jordan.
And my Mom gave my OT Star Wars figures to my nephew, and their dog ate half of their heads. So I KNOW THE PAIN OF THIS and it SUCKS!!
You could tell he was totally thinking he was about to say $350-400,000.
There was a pregnant pause there. Brutal.
In the 50s and 60s i use to play in the schoolyard with other kids.We played many baseball card games..Flipsies and tossies..I flipped and tossed Micky Mantle rookie cards..Willie Mays Cards Roger Maris cards .The year of the home run race with Mantle and Maris.!961..And many others...I often wonder how much money they would be worth today.
What a good mom lol i just sold my Pokémon and yugioh collections for $4,000 that my mom kept for 15+years. Sad part is We prolly still lost money from all the packs she and I bought 😭😂
PBS gets a like for this guy's reaction and wanting to share it with his Momma!

Clean and press them, improve the condition and then send to CGC.
It seems the parents of the past are whats making comics so valuable today. No telling what my mom threw away. Still love her though
Yes and no... For Golden Age comics Hitler is the big reason. Spot on for Silver/modern though.
My mom hated me having anything to do with my comics. She thought they were evil.... so I bought even more....that was in 1990. I’m still collecting....
My grandpa sold my uncle's cases of baseball cards at a swap meet for 20 bucks in the 80's. He had multiples of every team, many of them signed from every year, every player from the start of the league, and the preceding teams in plastic cases. Afterwards, my dad priced a few of them, and at the time the most valuable one was over $600,000.
And I almost won the lottery yesterday
Typical woman. They have no concept of value.
I still buy comics from time to time. I have a deadpool number 1 that was in a multi pack. Its over $100..
I know this guy! He’s a fantastic person (obviously).
"This" guy, because there's only one guy in the video.
Had so many original comic books as a kid my father used to bring from Paris. In 1980s .. something like that... but then America invaded... lost it all. Thanks for the democracy 👊🏼
My late dad once told me he owned the first issues of the Superman (Action Comics) and Batman comic books he aquired in the 1940s but his mother didn’t realized they would be worth tons money some day and throw them out while my dad was away as teenager. Batman #1 has sold for as much as $2,220,000 and even a poor but complete edition is worth at least $10,000 and a copy of 'Action Comics' No. 1 (where Superman debuted) has sold for as high as $3.21 million. I don’t know what condition my dad kept his comics in but just thinking what they could have been worth, even in less then pristine condition makes me 😔.
It is exactly because thousands of mothers did the same thing that the books are worth so much today.
He had me at another box 😯 too bad we don't get to find out what was in there.....
"My mom's not going to believe this!"
*looks behind him*
"Hey mom! You're not going to believe this!"
I bought X-Men Giant Sized # 1 for a dollar a few years back at a rummage sale. It's graded and sealed. I also bought 12 other old X-men and Hulk comics from the same wife. I bet her husband is still mad at her.
I bought my copy of Avengers #1 for $1000. at auction....I grade it at around 4.5...no tears...complete....but I'm no expert...I thought it was a good deal!!...I'll have it graded someday....
He needs to send that in to CGC to get them graded. The year is 2022 and that Avengers 1 comic in that condition is probably worth $10K+ graded
I thought he was going to say $450-500 thousand 🤣🤣
is there a website where I could see all the old and new comics.... and read them...
readcomiconline.to
What a great find and I live in Washington too.
As a kid, I played with very old comics because I had no idea of the value of them. Old comics like this and original Archie ones. Then my dad threw them out cause they were just junk to him (they were his as a kid and he is 80 now). I wish I understood back then the value of those and other things I broke, like old tea cups from the 1800s. I also wish my Dad understood their value as well. He could have stopped my dumbass from wrecking so much valuable stuff!
I think he was excited about their value.... LOL.
How much is this recording of Antique Roadshow worth when it aired before the Ant-Man movie? Or the second one? Or the 2 Avengers movies after Age of Ultron? Or Captain America 3, Doctor Strange, GotG 2, Spider-Man, Thor 3, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, or Spider-Man 2?
My mom sold two binders full of holifoil Pokémon cards I began collecting in the 90s for $10 at a family garage sale.
I will never forgive her for it.
It's painful IRONY that mother's get revenge on their kids by either selling or giving their prized toys, comics, or baseball cars away. In their eyes they are useless pieces of garbage. One lady found her son's Hot Wheels. There were 5 of them still in the package, like brand new. She figured he never opened them because he didn't like them so she sold them in a box of cars for $2.00 marked assorted toys. One of them has been shown on Hot Wheels Channels and it's value is SICK!! I'll bet this guy and his mom arent the best of friends. They showed this on a Crazy but true segment a while back. Now that car could get you a brand new REAL CAR.
My stepmom threw my binder of foils and rares away.
What were in the binders?
Doesn’t matter if u didn’t have Charrizard it’s worthless and had to be in excellent condition graded
I had a step daughter who collected hundreds of these cards, I didn't even know what they really where and just throwed them out because I thought they was just kids crap, really kicking myself about that now
Why would you not tack on the "bonus footage" to the UA-cam cut?
These are only 2 of his comic books! I wish they would have shown the entire collection here.
He thought they were worth more 😂
The appraiser has a Seth Rogen laugh at 3:07
He talks like a valley girl.
Totally
I’m sooo sure
@@dave3138 Oh, you know him?
@@dave3138 In one short sentence you identify yourself as a homophobe and a racist. I bet you're fun to spend time with.
Homophobia would mean im scared of gays, hence the "phobia" but no, im not scared, LMFAO . As for racist, i have Native American and PR in me. Also , my GF is black and Mexican. So, care to make more assumptions, oracle ?
Well he was definitely expecting more
I have a huge collection of X-Men and Amazing Spider-Man comics that I can't get rid of. You think it would be easy to sell, but it isn't. Big collections don't sell on ebay, so to actually make any money, I would need to spend hundreds of hours categorizing, photographing, describing, listing, packing, and shipping each individual book. So they sit in my closet.
I remember selling my Avengers #2 when I was in high school for 15.00 , man I wish I still owed it today
I still have my issue number 1 Simpson's comics hopefully there worth something one day
Maybe you can get $25.
Bet you could trade some poor sap for some Alf pogs, or possibly their soul.
There from bongo comics
I had all the Marvel's in the early to late 60s. Every first edition of every character. But they were just comics then... and I was just a kid. What did I know?
I hope he keeps them
I'm surprised the first edition wasn't worth more... I have a collectors edition of Akira which is worth £2000, and that was printed in the 80's.
Quality and rarity matters. Anyways, this episode was half a decade ago so it probably doubled in that time. Is your Akira copy Japanese or English?
@@realtalk6195 Hi Real talk... Mine is English without a dust cover.
I already reading The Avengers(1963) issue #1 and already watching Hulk(1966) episode 8.
I honestly thought it would be worth way more than that
They were worth way more in the early 90s.
@@groowanderer that is not true, they are worth more now.
@@EricCKeys I'm out of touch with comic collecting, I'll admit. But when i was collecting in the 90s comics were worth a lot of money. I've got several highly collectible ones, very early spider man, xmen, etc. That were worth hundreds when I was young. Just as a quick example I have the first appearance of gambit and as a kid it was worth 280 bucks. At that point it was only a few years old. I looked it up the other day and I'd be lucky to get 60 for it.
You know that when he said the first price of $450-$500 he thought 450-500,000 😂 😂 You can tell that he was underwhelmed lol
Great reaction.
1963 is the year I was born. It would be cool to have a comic from that year. That is one reason the price is high, because Boomers like me have disposable income 😀
2:47 .... his mom kept these comics .... guess what my mom threw away .... :-(
I wonder if he took those on Pawn Stars what the Expert would value those at, and then what offer they would give him? lol
That number 1 and 2 would be worth 100% more just from having a pga grade
Very true. I have a Rickey Henderson 1980 Topps rookie card PSA 9. I wont get into what I used to have. Not really. The #1 he shows in VG- condition, CGC graded (a 4.5) is selling for around $2,000 right now. CGC i helpful if you are selling stuff on ebay though and you don't want to get into a potential conflict with you and a buyer over the grade of the comic when you sell it to them though. comics.gocollect.com/guide/view/124346
All tore up like that? Wow
"Mom.. you did good"
Imagine having avengers 1 no bag or board. Just massive balls
Couple months ago I bouth an old LIFE magazine for three dollars at a thrift shop. Great condition, looked kinda new. A few days after I looked up how much it sells for on eBay. The particular issue I have sells for $450. That's insane.
"You are kiddinggggg meeeeeeeeeeeeee" lol his Mommy is probably there telling him when to go to the potty.
Get it graded and price will go up.
There is an episode where Jack Kirby’s granddaughter appears with some sketches concept art that her Grandfather worked for Both Marvel And DC Comics My Uncle who is Brazilian he mentioned that most of the newer younger people college students are Brazilian and Working for Both Marvel and DC this was after Stan Lee passed away we were on vacation
Brazil is particularly known for their much more adult oriented Animation style
He wanted that avengers two to be worth way more lmao
He was hoping the guy would have said a million
This guy was on Pawn Stars with the same Comics. What do they do passing around the networks or what?
Here in 2022 wondering what the market price is of these now after all the successful franchises...
Wow I Wanted One.
The guy who brought the comics was right when he said "No Way". No way is Avengers 1 going to auction ungraded in this condition (3.5-4.0 at best) for $4000-$6000. First of all any one who gives you a price that ranges 30% from low to high is just winging it. 2nd AR likes to let`s say have the appraiser WOW the viewers cause why else are they watching.. Look on ebay now you can find graded 4.0 signed by Stan Lee for less than $3500. If someone gave you 4 grand for Avengers 1 ungraded in the presented condition you`d take the money and haul ars.
I remember watching an episode of MASH where Radar was laying in bed (cot) reading an Avengers comic book....before it was published.
thats right...that episode was filmed in '72. but in the show it was '52
@@aaronrichards2842 And the comic was published in 62.
this guys like YES! JACKPOT! hahahahaha
Yea right. 2k for that Avengers 1. The man and estimate is high.
??? What???? We're you getting 2 grand. #2 was estimated at 450 bucks and #1 was 4 to 6 thousand. and by the way this show was late 2014, which means the estimation will be different than 2020..
@@maninthebox-dz9yo I was looking at GPA. 2300 is roughly around the 12 month average. It really comes down to the grade and then the presentation of that grade. Some 4.5s look like 6.0s You just never know. Has a recession hit? You'll probably get less for it. So many things to factor in. But the guys estimate is/was high. For 2014 an Avengers 1 in that 4.0 range was around 1700 so it was even more off.
Rick: let me give you 400. I have to get them graded, find an auction, find a frame, pay Chum...im taking all the risk here.
lol...tell ya what...give me 200$ to take them off your hands.
Pee-wee Herman laugh at 3:09🤣
Watch his reaction closely...
He is NOT happy. He was thinking that these specific Comics were going to be worth A LOT more than what he was just quoted. People almost never take into account the condition of the Comic. What does it look like? Are there creases all over the pages? Are the Colors fading? Are the Staples still in tact, and does the Comic hold together well?
I honestly think this guy was hoping to hear "... valued at around $100k to 200k..."
And when he heard the actual amount, he was devastated!
Dude was happy, go be an internet sleuth somewhere else.
What a lovely man!
Worth a lot more money now
Those have probably doubled in price since then.
1963 is really not that long ago. There copies of these in attics everywhere. All the kids bought comics in the 60s. They all did not get THROWN out. Keep looking and asking about comics'; especially people who had kids and ARE still living in their house form the 60s.
If this guest is as much of a comic collector as he says he is, then he should've already known the value of the selected comics for this appraisal. Overstreet and eBay anyone?
