Hope you change your mind about the Fuel card and find a way to report direct to the store ownership at a corporate level. Letting criminals get away with these actions only motivates them to do more. Be safe, and thanks for putting out great content, and strong opinions. Keep up the good work.

Dan, I have installed the Point of Sale for two of the largest national Truck stop service centers and can confirm, that those systems they use, (when you scan, the card at the pump) the people inside the store (staff) can see the entire card number, pin and code), it is displayed on the screen inside. (basically, it is an Older system, technology, and does NOT encrypt the data. In my opinion, if a employee is crooked, it is as simple as taking a photo of the screen and emailing to a friend or associate, who then uses the info to pump free gas at another gas station. If they are more sophisticated, it only takes 60 seconds, using a USB card reader, (to transfer YOUR card info to a blank card), and then walk into any retail location, and use that card to make purchases (basically cloning or copying your card, to a blank card). If anything you should report this the retail outlet. Another possible trick, if you have control, is to change the PIN every-time, you load the card with cash. That way if someone stole the card and old pin, they have a worthless CARD #, (As they will NOT have the correct PIN).

Safe travels, Dan. Just a thought on your fuel card, look into second level verification. Before you can use your card, you need to use a PIN number that is sent to your cell phone. New PIN number for each transaction. No PIN, no transaction. Thanks for the video! Happy Holidays

I was leased to Landstar from 2001 to 2013, and used we used the Comdata card. I was never hacked, but lost the card in a ATM in Mexico once, just did not spit the card back out! I just canceled the card, and they sent me a new one! I know this was a long time ago, but just relating the type of card Landstar used. Our card worked the same way, like a debit card. and you told them how much to load on the card for every load. I never kept a excess amount on the fuel card. The rest of my money was set up to direct deposit!

A card without the Visa/MC logo dedicated just for fueling and requires 2 factor auth or at least your pin or drivers license number seems like it would be safer. I’ve been using Comdata thru Landstar for a little over 5 years without any problems. Card doesn’t work without a drivers license number and doesn’t work like a debit/credit card (at least to my knowledge it doesn’t). I’m going to start keeping a lower balance like you suggested just in case though. Stay safe out there.

My EFS card has “option” to not allow cash advance.
To buy fuel, you have to have the card, truck number, employee number, and odometer reading. The thief would need to know all this information… easiest guess is Mercer. Someone at Mercer has this information.

I don't know about ta or loves but pilot you can connect your card to your account. Then you type in your mileage etc on the app and it gives you a code to type on the screen at the pump. That would avoid even pulling the card out. Maybe you could get one of those fancy wallets that block the tap to pay scanner things.

I don't know why EFS doesn't have a lock/unlock feature on their cards so when you use it you can unlock your card and when you're not using it you can lock your card to prevent unauthorized transactions like that...this is usually done through an app on your phone just like you receive text notifications about charges on your card. I use that feature on my bank card, to prevent issues like that.
Keep up the good work and stay safe out there. 😎👍

    • @chriskahlson
      @chriskahlson 2 роки тому +2

The cards can be manually activated and deactivated by the cardholder using the online app, if not you need to urge Mercer to change to a debit card provider that has that feature. The same card app that let you turn on the notifications should have an activate and deactivate setting. If and when an unauthorized charge ever occurs, right click on the unauthorized charge and report it while it’s in “pending” status and it will never be processed to “paid” status, once it goes to paid stays claims will be much more difficult to recover unauthorized funds. Mercer should be using a debit card provider where the cardholder has total access and control over the card.

I had just purchased some gasoline for my Honda generator to run my window air conditioner. Then someone tried to purchase sixty dollars of something (without the card) and the card was disabled by the bank issuing the card. It had to have been the cashier inside the store that was attempting to use the card. I had pre paid inside the store for the gasoline I purchased. It's the store cashier workers who are doing the theft.

Dan, Speaking of APPS, please use the fuel apps, i.e. Pilot/Flying J, Loves, and so on. You can list EFS as the payment method on the fuel apps. You never have to swipe your cards, just your phone. Very safe when fueling. When inside at the counter, use another method or a separate card for the incidentals and small stuff. Hope you recover the losses. Cheers.

I use the app. Store your card information in the app. Enter the start code from the app

DAN I feel you. Not a driver but I have been hacked 4 or 5 times. It is a darn hassle to file a police report spend time on the phone ( usually an hour or two) so you cancel the card and it takes 10 days to get a new one. I just have my wife shut the card off until I'm in line or ONline to make a purchase. Then shut it off again right away. It's all a hassle. Bit everytime I leave it on damned if I don't get hit again. This next time I'm goung with another bank. Your right I think it's industry wide. I don't think it's just commercial drivers I think it's everyone everywhere. Pray you and Bayly get home for a while seems like you have been banging the drum hard for several months. God bless and protect you and "ALL OUR BACKBONE OF OUR NATION" GOD BLESS YOU ALL. AS A VET I FEEL DRIVERS SHOULD HAVE THE SAME RESPECT. Your videos are really the only ones any more I look forward to watching. Recently had a 1,570 mile trip up north and back...lol kept looking for your truck.

TRUCKER DAN LOOK INTO GETTING A RFID BLOCKING WALLET. BAD GUYS can read your card if unprotected with an RFID reader! ALL TRUCKERS should look into an RFID WALLET to stop RFID readers. GOOD LUCK and thanks, truckers for your hard work keeping AMERICA running. Reminds me, when you were talking you had someone in front and behind you while using your card, it could have been one of the people around you with an RFID reader.

My EFS card does not have that RFID chip. I would think Dan's EFS card doesn't have it neither. Most truck stops like TA or Love's have not implemented chip readers.

      Maybe skimmers on the pump?

I’d try an RFID Wallet too. If it happens thereafter, then it seems like a skimmer would be to blame.

Also. If you have the ability to login to the EFS account online, change your password every time that happens as a further check and balance, since you mentioned you’re already on the lookout for the skimmers.
