True. idk what the P4P rankings were at the start of 1980, but there's a chance that Leonard was #1 after he beat Benitez while Duran was arguably the best boxer of the 1970s along w/ Carlos Monzon and Ali and could be #1 if he wasn't #2 in the P4P ranks. To hold the bout where Leonard won the Gold medal in the 1976 Olympics was also icing on the cake. I'm sure it was a magnanimous spectacle even though I wasn't even alive yet.

Leonard was his generations Canelo....don't care how good he was, it's hard to appreciate a fighters performance when they have a reputation for winning gift decisions or benefiting from "bad" refs. Just a bigger fan of the sport than the fighters I guess.

Yes, the masterful way Toney slowly, methodically broke Jirov down was a masterclass on smart, effective-but-not-flashy boxing. I remember watching it and thinking even though Toney was behind in the beginning, the work he was putting in was gonna pay dividends, and that ended up being exactly what happened.

One of my top 50 is Salvador Sanchez vs Wilfredo Gomez. While the fight itself was pretty one sided in Sanchez favor, the historical significance of the fight can't be overlooked. Gomez at the time was 32-0-1 with all 32 victories by KO. He KO'd one of Mexico's all time greats in Carlos Zarate as a part of his 32 KO streak. He was easily the best Jr. Flyweight and decided to come up in weight to Flyweight to challenge Sanchez.
Sanchez was 40-1-1 and easily considered the best Flyweight, beating notable fighters such as Felix Trinidad Sr., Danny "Little Red" López and Juan Laporte.
Each fighter was far and away the best in their respective weight classes, but more importantly, to this day, this was probably the most significant fight in the Mexico vs Puerto Rico boxing rivalry.

    Another brilliant effort, Rummy!
However, I strongly disagree with this 'Top 50 must watch boxing fights' list. So many of the fights are from heavyweight. I understand that the heavyweight division is marquee in prizefighting, but there are so many great fights from other divisions. This is clearly the list of 'must watch fights of the boxers we love'.
How on earth are Mike Tyson's boxing fights 'must watch'? His fights tell one out of the two stories - 'beat a low profile, out of shape or aging fighter' or 'get beaten by someone'.
Look how many fights are missing from this list. And how many of the fights are from the 70s onwards.
Willie Pep vs Sandy Saddler (multiple fights)
Tony Zale vs Rocky Graziano (multiple fights)
Jake LaMotta vs Sugar Ray Robinson (one fight is mentioned, but there were more)
Gene Tunney vs Harry Greb (multiple fights, especially the one where Greb won)
    Josh Warrington vs Carl Frampton
Julio Cesar Chavez vs Pernell Whittaker
    Archie Moore vs Joey Maxim
    Ezzard Charles vs Archie Moore
Barbados Joe Walcott vs Tommy West
GGG vs Canelo Alvarez (first fight)
Floyd Mayweather vs Jose Louis Castillo
    Benny Leonard vs Lew Tendler
And so many which I cannot recall.
Even if heavyweight is considered, there were so many fights better than that Tyson vs Berbick damp squib.
    Tommy Burns vs Jack Johnson
Joe Louis vs Billy Conn (First fight)
Joe Louis vs Jersey Joe Walcott (First fight)
Jersey Joe Walcott vs Ezzard Charles (multiple fights)
Sonny Liston vs Cleveland Williams (two fights)
Rocky Marciano vs Roland La Straza (First fight)
    Larry Holmes vs Tim Witherspoon
    Chris Byrd vs Andrew Golota
Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder (first fight)

Whilst I appreciate the sentiment behind some of this post, it's worth pointing out the following:
      1. This is not a list of the greatest fights in boxing history, simply a list of fights that are considered 'must watch' for boxing fans - so it takes into consideration more than whether the fight was a great one of not e.g. you call Tyson-Berbick a damp squib but there's no doubting its significance ('We have a new era in boxing!' as Barry Tompkins said)
      2. The list is made up of fights where complete or near complete footage exists and is readily available. Hard to be a must watch fight if you can't watch it so as much as Greb-Walker is a fight all true boxing fans would love to see, it can hardly be a must watch fight when no known footage exists.
      3. Yes, the list is heavily weighted towards the heavyweights, but it also includes some fights on there that you won't often see mentioned on lists of the greatest fights ever (Gasper Ortega v Benny Paret, Jung Koo Chang v Tastuo Tokashi) so it does a pretty good job I think of capturing the breadth of the sport.
There are some fights that I'd have liked to see on there myself - Basilio-DeMarco 2 for example is one that I think every boxing fan should see and encapsulates everything I love about the sport in one fight but there were 38 lists and it would have needed to be included on a fair few of them to have made the top 50. I included it on mine (and only one of my 25 was a heavyweight fight btw) but not enough people considered it enough of a must watch to make the cut. It doesn't stop anyone seeking it out and watching it, though. Hopefully they will after feasting on these 50 fights!

U r spot on, i totally 100% agree with your much better and more sensible list of fights, they fumbled this list, a great fight is when both fighters give and take not 1 sided beat downs like tyson spinks or foreman frazier and im glad u listed mayweather vs castillo but another one that their list missed is mayweather vs maidana 1

Makes me nostalgic for the time when boxing actually had fights of consequence. That's probably the best thing about the UFC, they make the fights that people want to watch.

Howdy. Unfortunately, both fights end in tragedy, but Eubank v Watson l & ll, Benn v McClennan are classics. Josh Warrington v Carl Framton, another incredible bout that is well worth taking a look at.
      Enjoy.
      Peace from GB.

The fact that smoken Joe went 1-1 in the top two fights in. Boxing history should inform the world how great he was.
AND subconsciously perhaps Rummy’s masterpiece in the last seconds had Joe nailing Ali with two beautiful shots
