    Highly recommend getting the gluten free card. I was in Japan and it helped me a lot when I used it. Also there is a traditional Japanese soy sauce that is gluten free, ask for “Tamari”.. you will really enjoy it. Unfortunately for me when I went I got sick by accidentally eating some gluten. What helped me a lot is the easy access to “onigiri” in most convienance stores. I eat that for breakfast everyday and it’s super cheap (I think $1 each). The Salmon with Mayo onigiri is not gluten free so please avoid that one. I recommend the ramen store she mentions at Tokyo station. I went there a lot too so that I can eat a full meal safely. When I needed a quick snack I ate Mochi safely too. Those are the best options.

    Thanks for the video! This is really helpful for those planning trips to Japan - I've been to several places that you listed and Soranoiro is by far one of my favourite. It makes great gluten free vege Ramen!
    Funny, I have also been to Japan 3 times, twice on 1-month trips and once as a coeliac where I worked as an ALT. Tokyo has some great gluten-free places. I found it challenging to find gluten-free places outside of there though, especially in Hitachi, Ibaraki where I lived. And sadly, this is also one of the reasons why I left Japan.
    I have a question though, did you ever have to check for MSG in packaged crisps/savoury foods? I'd often get plain/shake onigiri and SoyJoy bars at Konbini, mostly because I had read MSG in Japan is made from wheat, and I don't believe this is often labelled in the allergen section of packaged goods?

    • @howtocoeliac
      @howtocoeliac  2 роки тому +1

      Hey! that's such a coincidence, it would defo be hard to live in Japan full time, esp outside of Toyko.
      In terms of MSG, according to Coeliac UK it's gluten free - it CAN be made from wheat but the processing completely breaks down the gluten so it's safe for coeliacs.
      It's also annoying cause it stands for monosodium glutamate which looks like the word gluten but has nothing to do with it 😅
      Also apparently MSG in Japan is mostly made from fermenting the sugar extracted from sugar canes, corn or tapioca starch.
      This would have been good for me to add in the video - so thank you so much for bringing it up!

    Unfortunately the rice wine vinegar is tinted gold, that is where the wheat color has been added. At least that is what I have learned while living here for 25 years. You just have to ask at the sushi restaurant. The problem with that is some less expensive places do not know what is in the rice.

    Hello. 6 month coeliac here. I am about to travel to Japan soon. Great video. Japan seems hard. I have been to most countries in Asia, but that was before my diagnosis. I still have Japan on my bucket list. What I feel is a mystery in my research so far is the confusion regarding soy sauce. In Sweden the authorities have measured most imported soy sauces including japanese and chinese brands. Even though it says wheat on the bottles it has below 20 ppm which is below the limit to get labelled gluten free. I hear that it is cause of the process of making the soy sauce (I am not an expert on this process, yet). But it seems that in Asia soy sauce seem to be a problem for us celiacs or? I understand that we have to avoid it in case we are not sure. I hope that I can get some clarity on soy sauces in Asia somehow.

    • @TheSwede70
      @TheSwede70 2 роки тому

      @@svenja9581 Yes, if you want to be 100 % safe, and we want to be, We should avoid it. But I am not sure you read my post above in its entirety. If I find evidence that I can eat something and its safe why would I avoid it? That was the point of my post. Again, there are a number of soy sauces tested by the government here that say wheat on the list and it is still very low gluten content, below the guidelines for being marked gluten free. I eat other things labelled gluten free that contains a similar amount that some of these soy sauces. So in that case we should stop eating those also, and only stick to natural gluten free, (which many do).

However, I've been wanting to bring my coeliac girlfriend to Japan too but have been burned out by the research into gluten-free places! Great video! I love all of the tips and practical break downs. I like how you didn't sugarcoat that a lot of the dishes are not traditionally GF but provided options and advice on how to get GF versions. Plus, it was nice hearing that you had been pre-celiac/GF so that means that you have a good idea of what the cuisine is like.
    Before going gluten free I wouldn't have given it a second thought about not being able to read the language. I once spent a month in Greece and ended up in places that did not have an English or French menu (I don't know why but a of times they'd have a translation to French and I know enough French to get by). But I didn't know of any food allergies at the time so dinner was often an adventure. The idea of going to Japan (where my husband REALLY wants to go) always sounded a bit stressful since going GF. I hadn't ever looked into it so it was nice seeing your video to change my point of view. Maybe once the pandemic and travel restrictions are less prevalent, we'll plan a trip!
    Also, Jodie from Legal Nomads is great. I've known about her translation cards but haven't gone anywhere yet where I needed them. I highly recommend her GF travel facebook group! I've found great advice in the group when traveling in New York, LA, San Francisco, New Oreleans, Seattle, London, Edinburg, and Amsterdam. I've even added to the threads on my hometown. People are always quick to respond and she does a good job at emphasizing that they need to include if something is Celiac safe or not.
