I Finished My Red Wool Vintage Style Winter Coat!

- I am so happy with how my new winter coat came out! I used McCalls 8123 by @AngelaClaytonCostumery to make my new vintage-style coat out of red wool from my fabric stash, and it is so absolutely cozy and nice, even if I do look like I stepped out of a Hallmark movie.
This is the pattern I used: somethingdelig...

For covered buttons with such thick fabric, I'd go old school and sew the fabric around a button, and skip the dritz kit
That’s brilliant!! And much much easier than the dritz kit!
I definitely thought about that, but I didn't have any the right size anyway.
@@LadyRebeccaFashions could you have used the domed part of the kit only?
@@petapendlebury9024 I feel like that would feel really weird/sharp on the back.
@@LadyRebeccaFashions ah - I wasn't sure if it had grippy teeth on that bit - I've never used the Dritz ones. Definitly not good! I bought a stack load of wooden button blanks (no holes) in various sizes that a medieval re-enactor seller does here in the UK so I can do old style covered buttons with those. Mine are flat but you can get domed ones. I had heard that they used to use pennies back in the day but I would think those would be kind of heavy! Victorian British pennies were about 25mm across I think so not a bad size for a coat!
I solved the big-hood-blowing-off-or-slipping-forward issue on one of mine by sewing a drawstring, on a separate piece of matching fabric) into the lining (before the lining was put into the hood, so no stitches showed through to the outside.
That way if the wind was up or it was important that the hood fit snug, I could tighten the drawstring around my face and the hood stayed big with just the lining piece cinched in to keep it in place... The rest of the time, I loosed the drawstring and had both the lining and the hood at the original large proportions.
I like dthe bigger puff on the other sleeve heaad - it looked nicely 1890s
I've seen coats with the drawstring in the hood, but only in sportier/more modern applications, and tbh, I always thinks it looks weird drawn up.
I also seen hoods that are longer have a decorative thing in back of the hood from the neck and up a bit that they can kinda pull to make it a bit shorter or not fall farward or something. Could not really tell what she did with it and was a long time agi but saw a woman that had that and did adjust it so it didn't blow to far farward. Think it maybe was a thing tha looked nice that could attach to neck and that shortern the hood
You could wear a snood or something like that under the hood if you’re expecting a cold day.
That's a really smart idea!
That coat screams Christmas! It turned out beautifully and looks great on you. 💖
Thank you!
Trust me, not all coats are bag lined. I hate bag lining. It never lays right and lets the coat shift all over the place. That's a nice colour for you. Wear it in good health!
The trick is not to attach the lining to the hem, just let it swing free. Also what I do is increase the back width by 2 inches and pleat that up at the centre back neck for about 3 inches. That way the lining never pulls on the outer fabric. You tack it to the coat fabric at the under arms. The coats I usually made were inter lined with thinusate because I live in a much colder fabric so the lining had to be a bag lining.
I made a coat and flatlined it and still ended up with my lining showing around all edges, I ended up having to do a decorative top stitch an inch or so from the edges to keep it on the inside!
dora is such a cute cat! does she also like to help by sitting in the center of whatever you're working on?
Oh definitely! And thanks!
I can’t believe how simply curving the buttons improved the fit dramatically without altering the line for the front of the coat! That was inspired thinking. I love your coat: be proud!
I appreciate the time you took explaining how you used your prior blue coat to improve 5he red one.
I love these hoods and put them on loads of coats. I've found that putting a thin boning in the front and folding over the front 2 ish inches stops it from sinking, and I've never had issues with them blowing off eithersince it gives weight to the front. I've been using hood patterns like this for at least 15 years, and no problems so far! oh, you've just mentioned folding the front in. but I add the extra to the patternand don't just cold in what I have. I love Dora so much!! one of these days I'm going to be able to record my cats reaction to seeing her on screen and I'm going to send itnto you. She loves seeing Dora, and always looks behind my tablet for her.
Aww, I'd love to see your kitty's reaction! 😁
Loved the Dora footage
Realy like that coat...the style looks very chic on you...and that colour💖💗...i realy need to make myself a new coat im very inspired by yours🤩
Thanks! You should definitely make yourself one!
One thing to think about regarding the lovely hood....if you thread florist wire or craft wire through the front of it, you can mould the shape to frame your face and to take the weight from your hair a little.
Haha, the kitty interlude was a-Dora-ble!! I wish my Un-Bun was so tolerant of shenanigans, but he just steals all my tools and digs up my fabric.
You do look like you stepped out of a hallmark movie but in the best way possible!
This came out so cute and I’m glad the buttons worked out they look great!
Gorgeous! Love it with the hood.
I don't know how accurate the color is in the video, but I LOVE that orangey-red color! What a fun setting for your reveal photo shoot!
As you were recalling which way to overlap, I caught myself moving my arms like I was closing a jacket and murmuring “women are always right.” 😆
Your trials and tribulations ring so true! I used plastic buttons instead of self-cover (because heavy velvet and cover buttons don't mix!) Also did the button-holes by hand, instead of by machine, because less stress!
Linings are a beast... and they drop!
Finished coat looks amazing, and I love the pleating in the back of the skirt.
Gorgeous coat, and such a lovely cheerful colour when it's cold and gloomy! I love the pleats in the back, they make it so swishy!
I watch your videos so much that I asked Santa for a sewing machine for Christmas! I’ll make a coat one day and I’m so exited about it! Thanks for posting so often!
That's so awesome! Enjoy your new machine!
This turned out so beautifully!! I’m so tempted to try!! ❤
Right???
Oh me three!!
Thanks! You totally should!
I love all the sleeve puff 😍 but I would add puff sleeves to everything
You can make fabric covered buttons without a kit. You get a button of the size you want and cut a circle of fabric a little over twice as big as the button. You put the button in the middle of the fabric (maybe with a little bit of batting for padding, to disguise any ridges or pattern on the button), sew around the edge of the fabric, and then pull it tight. Then you do a few more stitches to secure everything, and voila.
You made a very pretty coat! Many many years ago I used to sew a lot of my clothes (think High School, late 60's). I loved working with nice wool!
“I won at thread chicken” 😂😂
Totally relate! 😁XXX
The coat looks so flattering on you and I love the "swish" when you twirled!
The coat is gorgeous. You did an amazing job. If it was me, and this is only a nit pic. So take it with the grain of salt as I don't have your amazing skills. I'd have made the coat a quarter inch longer than your usual dress length. Please don't take that as a criticism. You did an amazing job, and I wish I had your skills.
I know it's not as functional, but I like the look of my skirts peeking out (hence why this length).
@@LadyRebeccaFashions Then you do you. 😁 And as I said the coat looks great.
Hi Lady Rebecca, just wanted to say that I think Dora is the cutest cat ever!!! She has the most beautiful coloring!!!
I love the Dora cameo and I love this coat so very much. Might be my favorite make of yours now.
So in love with this jacket. Have you ever covered a regular button with cloth. Just run a gather stich around your cut circle then sew the back up. Leave your thread tails long and you can sew them onto the garment with them.
I don't think I've ever done it before, though I thought about doing it with this one. But I didn't have the right size buttons anyway.
The coat is beautiful, fabulous twirl factor! ❤
I love your coat. Our household calls our mallet, “the friendly persuader”
I have a wonderful coat with an oversized hood, it's the only coat I've ever had where I feel nice in it and not just a beached whale. I've found the hood being deeper useful for keeping rain off my glasses and I simply hold the front of the hood in place, if it's windy, to keep it in place. I love the look of it way too much to want to change it and holding it is a small price to pay.
Gorgeous coat!!! OMGOODNESS!….when you were doing the spins, I was literally waiting for you to do a high kick!! Hahahaha. All this missing is a white furry muff to carry all your stuff in so you don’t have a purse and also to keep your hands warm!!… yes, I’ve always wanted one of those! 😊 I really enjoy watching your videos!
I actually have a white furry muff already, and I thought of bringing it with me, but then wound up forgetting it. And thank you!
I like your brooch!
I actually like the pretty black buttons but the covered buttons give the coat a more shall we say, regal look. Hopefully you will be able to find another project for the pretty black buttons.
Lovely Christmas coat! Santa will be wanting the next dance!
So pretty! The trick with the waist buttons is really nifty.
Dora's "Mom, really?" expression was kind of hilarious.
I love it, and I want one. The color is divine, Rebecca! The lights were so pretty; I love driving around looking at all the holiday lights. Promise to finish the hem on that gorgeous coat.
xoxo's Sandie🎄
It's already finished! And thanks!
@@LadyRebeccaFashions You are fast! It's a beautiful coat.
Perfect color, flattering fit, stylish silhouette… just a perfect result!
Turned out so well. I especially love the fit and how it is longer in back.
I think the longer hem in the back looks good.
I wish I waited to make this pattern for myself . I made it last winter. I made it much longer , which I love. I HATE the sleeves I didn'tbother lining them. . I love your version of the sleeves so much better. Makes me want to rip my sleeves off and redo if not redo the whole coat. I love your version so much better. You pointed out all my fit issues and what I want to change. Thank you
Thank you! If it would make you much happier, then the sleeves are definitely worth redoing!
The coat is gorgeous, love the happy red colour and the Christmas fair looks awesome too!! Just a small thing, bag lining refers to a cheap, quick and modern industrial way of lining. It's never used in "proper" tailoring, and older garments usually have a full, separate lining installed with tailoring methods. As your sewing is on a quite advanced level I guess you would like to use proper terminology too, so hope you find this helpful. On a side note, I do think you should try out proper lining methods on a project like this in the future, for a tailor it's usually a very satisfying part of a project.
I love the coat. I feel your pain with the button holes. The test button hole always works and then the actual button holes always decide to go wonky!
I dunno if anyone else gets excited just watching something coming together but I really do 😅. The buttons definitely sound like they were…unpleasant…to make. Maybe for the covered buttons doing it the way where they’re stuffed with cloth and sewn on could have been easier…and hopefully doesn’t require a mallet lol
I 've made a couple of coats, during my learning curve. I love doing them, but yours is so much nicer. I have a pattern for a women s house coat, 1920s pattern. I made it as a beige coat, not too heavy fabric, just what I had in my stash. I love it.
Great job on the coat. If you want it a bit more fitted at the waist but still flexible, you could use a belt that was just across the back made of the same fabric. That would also hide the problem stitches.
If you decide to hem it, fold the fronts inside the facing and slip stitch the bottom closed just for the red section. Don't attach the lining to the hem except at the seams
I really love the front side panels and the back pleating! You look absolutely lovely 💕
A beautiful coat!! It just suits you so well! ❤️🎄
Thanks!
Love the coat. It’s beautiful.
One saying I tell my students about buttons that seems to help them is women are always right and men are just left over! I know not pc as it could be
You are so adorable. Loved the skipping through that light tunnel. :)
The coat looks beautiful!
Better to let the lining hang free and not be completely attached to the bottom hem. It allows it to drop on its own and you can re-hem the lining part if you need to.
If you ever need cloth covered buttons again, come up to Pacific Fabrics in SODO; we make buttons all the time for folks and while they're a little more expensive than the maker kits from Dritz, we do all the work for you. You just bring the fabric, pay, and hang out while they're made (unless we're slammed, and then we arrange a pick up time with you)
Oh interesting. I didn't realize PacFab covered buttons for people.
I love the poof! It really adds balance to the look of the coat.
I like the way you dress. We are the same size in clothes, yours are great! Thank you for your videos.
I wonder if you could use a hair comb and attach it to the inside of the hood... That way if it is particularly blustery, then you could put the comb into your hair to 'pin' it to your hair... Just a thought.
My hair is so fine that I wouldn't want to risk pulling it out!
Love this coat, and it looks fabulous on u! Red was the perfect color choice.
I got the same pattern with intention of making myself a shorter version. Now that I see how wonderful it can look, I will be making mine very soon. Thanks for sharing 🥰
Thank you! Good luck on your coat!
Beautiful. I like that the back is a tad longer, very stylish.
Gasp!!! It’s beautiful!
Dora 😂❤❤❤
Thank you!
Lovely coat! I would have turned the lining and sewn that to the sleeve cuff keeping the bulkier fabric flat. Also if you haven't done the hem yet I would put the front outer fabric and front facing right sides together, sew them together, trim/grade and turn and press - gives a neater finish. You can then finish the rest of the hem in the usual way and I agree, leave the lining free. You will have to free the lining a little bit where it meets the front facing if you do as suggested above though. I have a cobalt blue coat on my list for next year. 💙 ❤
Gorgeous coat and a great vlog. I’m in Northern Ireland and I wish we had Joann’s, I’m so envious when vloggers say they just had to run to Joann’s! X
Do you not have any local fabric stores?
When I saw this coat on your Instagram I was excited. This coat looks beautiful and a good fit as well. Xx
Thank you!
Totally love the coat! 💖
Thanks!
Congrats on your preservation & talents to complete your coat! Love how the hood fits so well. Great modeling! 😊
Thank you!
It's so cute and you are cute in it! I love the movement. I had a couple wonderful vintage heavy wool coats when I moved to Seattle from the midwest 30 some odd years ago but they proved too heavy and warm for all but the coldest Seattle days. This wool you have looks like the perfect weight to be warm but not hot.
Yeah, I've realized that this one is an "under 40° coat" whereas my blue one is a little lighter. And thank you!
It is gorgeous. Well done. You have inspired me to get my winter coat started.
Thanks! You can do it!
IT LOOKS FABULOUS!!!! Something about that shade of red reminds me of 1940. GORGEOUS! (🤭and so lady-like!)
Thank you!
I love the coat!!! It looks so good on you, I’m thinking of trying to make one….maybe….we’ll see. 😆
Thank you! You totally should!
Your coat came out AWESOME!! 🤩😍🤩 It looks great on you!! 😊 Happy Holidays, Lady Rebecca!!
Thank you! Happy holidays to you too!
@@LadyRebeccaFashions You're welcome! Thanks! 🙂
I have this pattern and have been wanting to make this for myself as well. It looks amazing, you did a fantastic job on it and I love the color on you.
Thank you! You should totally make yourself a fabulous coat!
Beautiful coat, and I'm loving the hood!
Awwww Dora 😻
More like stepped out of a fairy tale! I love the festive red riding hood flavor to it. The flair of the skirt is so beautiful. I think the poofier sleeves are nicer but i always adore poofy sleeves. The hood is so cute when you have it up!
Thank you!
What a fun swishy coat! Well done!
The coat is stunning! I love the look of your hood. I’m definitely saving this for future reference. For my dream coat. Though I’m going to have to use a heavier wool we get much colder here than the west coast.
Thank you! This is definitely a toasty coat (warmer than my blue). Even without a sweater underneath, I've reserved this for my "under 40° coat."
@@LadyRebeccaFashions where I live now it doesn’t usually get too cold. It’s surprising if we hit 0 f. But my daughter lives north it regularly gets below -40 (which is the same in Celsius and Fahrenheit). So I have to have different coats for different winters.
Wow! I would be thrilled to have a coat like that! You really excel at modeling your creations. I never miss anything you post. I totally vibe with the details of your process and your style! Thank you.
Aww, thanks so much!
I love this! Especially the hood.
I love your coat! Both of them actually. I wish I had the skills to make one.
Oh and the coat came out beautiful!!!!!!
Thanks!
I actually really like the look of the buttons like that when they are unbuttoned for some reason, even though it wasn't the original plan, it looks really interesting. I imagine this would look really cute with a matching belt too!
I love this coat, it's made me want to have a go! Looks really lovely on you!
Happy Holidays! Love your coat and Dora cameo.
Thank you! Happy holidays to you too!
This is my dream coat!!
excellent job on the coat! you're so talented!
Thank you!
It's SO beautiful!!!
What a beautiful coat. And you look great in it! Recently I saw an interview with "Couture Expert Kenneth D. King". He confessed to not being able to get a good result with bag lining, so he avoided it. I'm not saying you're better than him, but.....
Super cute coat!
It's gorgeous!
Your coat looks so cute! Love it :)
Thanks! Great job, so festive!
Thank you so much for your support! ❤️
Very lovely ☺ I guess this is also my reminder to finally tackle a coat myself. Putting this off since last winter... Well, maybe I could start with undoing the awful and always charging me and giving me sparkes polyester lining (I hope you get what I mean) in one of my bought coats and exchange that with a nicer cotton material 🤔
Geez, are the instructions on this pattern ever messed up! I found your video when I was searching for people who had sewn this and what they did when they had the same problems. Crazy! But, I turned in toward my own sewing knowledge, threw away the instructions, and did it my way!
What's this not the dress before so good
