Great video. That course looks amazing. Especially the weaverton cliffs. I don't think I've ever done an ultra that was both pavement and trails. This ultra made my list of ones to try.
Nice job showing the course with the good and the bad. I can't wait to get there next year. Congratulations on another finish and second best. I hope to run enough ultras to prepare me for the elevation but i know I can finish 50 miles but I want it to be there for my first. Thanks for the nice video John..
Great video. I actually appears in 2 of the shots with my brother. My first ultra. Already thinking about going back next year and fixing everything I did wrong. Great race.
@@motivationtheoryrunning I live in the Midwest. Anything more than 100 feet is good elevation gain 😂. I hope to one-day live closer to some mountains.
Lol and I’m jealous of the people who have eight and 10,000 foot mountains, I think the highest one we have here in Virginia is a little less than 5000
Congratulations! I can’t imagine filming myself during a 50 miler. It’s challenging enough to run, let alone document. Thanks for taking us along. PS - I did the MD AT from PenMar to Harpers Ferry last year and came down Weverton by headlamp in the dark. Yikes I was just ready to be done by that point so I wasn’t thinking about how dangerous it was. Haha
The switchbacks at night😳!! Thank you, It’s hard mostly because many times I don’t feel like filming, but I am have being filming running trails for over 6 years doing this channel so I am used to it…the low points are hard to film lol. If you watch my last Belmonte 50 miler film, the was a Bear to film. Glad we don’t do weaverton in the dark!🤣
After I finished watching your Yeti video, here I am watching your JFK 50 video again since you did add the link at the end. I probably will be watching it a few more times to get used to what the course is and what to expect when I get there next month. Keep making these kind of videos John. They are informative and inspirational. Especially for those of us that are working to do these races for the first time.
the video time you captured on the AT wasn't the worst of the rocky terrain you ran through. that trail was nasty! I called it Godzillas back! plates of stone sticking out like death stones.
Yeah, I chose not to film during the worst parts obviously for safety reasons… I’ve run it three times and I’ve seen some pretty bad Injuries up there so it’s smart to have all of your attention going towards making sure your feet go in the right spot and if you do fall, you need both hands available to brace your fall.
Congratulations!! What a perfect end to the year! What a cool varied course, and tons of support and encouragement along the way. You didn't seem to hit any real lows, amazing for a 50 miler! Was that mental grit or judicious editing? 😆 I was cringing watching you guys run over the leaf litter. So beautiful, so deadly!
Hehe hey!!! Thanks! Never hit any real lows, some tiredness, but no real super bonk, I attribute that to being on top of my hydration and nutrition for once…lol. But it was like my last 50k solo MCM run a couple weeks ago, just executed that plan again and it worked very well.
Great job John, looks like some technical terrain there. I think I rolled my ankle 3 times just watching you. I hope to get back to running more soon, I've been battling some small injuries pretty much all year.
Yeah is really technical and just plain hard to run fast on, many people went down hard and were injured having to be removed from the course…EMTs were busy.
Great job! Really enjoyed this video seeing the terrain of this course. The JFK 50 Miler is going on my bucket list. Also it got me excited for my upcoming 50K in January.
Hi; new subscriber & UA-camr here; nice to see fellow gray-haired guys out there!🧑🏻🦳 I'm 53 and training for JFK. I've fin 20 marathons but, want a new challenge. It's hard to get training time in. I'm a busy hospitalist PA in Washington, DC. I train on the C&O canal and Rock Creek Park. This is great footage; so inspiring! 😃👍👋👨🏾⚕️🏞️🏃🏾♂️
Hi John, I am running this for the first time this year. The course description says that at mile 2.5 you get on the AT but it seems you are on paved trail for a while around mile 6. Is mile 2.5 to weaverton not all AT? If not what is that paved trail portion? Thanks.
You are seeing that right, starts on the road, goes to trail a bit, then back on some blacktop park type roads up to the top, then you trickle onto the AT and roll with that until the cliffs. It’s almost all climb that first 6. I always just keep it slow and steady going up.
In this race, it was the try to average 13:30s after getting off the Appalachian Trail. And the formality of the times really fell apart so I was just making sure I was running for at least one minute for every mile. Sometimes that would be running for an actual minute sometimes that would be doing 4 run to the tree up ahead type thing… but always keeping an eye on my average pace, making sure I was trying to stick to 1330. I just did the same in the Yeti 100 both times to great success… I practice power hiking also a lot and can get my “walking” part down to sub 15:00 which helps a lot. When I run, I put my Garmin watch on the screen that shows me the current mile I am on, the average pace overall, and the current pace for that mile I’m in …makes it really easy.
Would you recommend using both road and trail shoes in this race depending on the section of course you are on? Seems like you would need a pair of each.
If you have someone to meet you at Weaverton cliffs you can switch from trail to any other shoe, I have done that, I have worn road shoes the entire way and I have worn trail shoes the entire way..Speedgoat 4s…
At the beginning, basically the 6 mile climb up was run the flatter parts power hike the steeper hills, The AT was the same..the C&O was 27 miles of trying to just maintain 13 min miles, which turned into me just running to a tree ahead, power hiking for 5 min, running for a min or so....off and on for 5.5 hours lol. The 8 miles of road is the same, with taking advantage of the rolling hills, running down them.
One year I ran the Appalachian Trail part and trail shoes and switched at Weaverton cliffs but the other two years I just wore my Hoka trail shoes the entire time…
Time on feet. Similar to training for a marathon, but with some b2b long runs mixed in to get you accustomed running on very tired, sore legs. I have a lot of content about preparing for ultras. This race is a great first 50, after the first 15 on the AT it is mostly flat.
It’s not bad…actually welcome because it helps with keeping a little bit warmer. It’s always freezing or below….it spreads out quickly because it’s a couple miles up hill on a road and then like another 4 to the top of the mountain

Very welcome! I read about JFK years before I ever ran it, I remember that feeling! You
Will do great!
Awesome!! Glad to see you uploading!
2 times today💪💪
Great video recap! I did JFK last year and had staggered starts. Nice to see everyone starting again at same time.
It was a great day! Congratulations on the finishing last year!💪

I like that the climbing is almost all roads💪💪
What a magical race. This year was my first and I will definitely be back next year.
It is a great race, congratulations on the Finnish Chuck !💪💪
That was awesome! Well done. Appreciate you doing that so much!

Thanks! It’s good times!
Good job ! Awesome! Footage
Thank you!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Amazing video and great run!

Great video! Thank you for filming it. I was wondering about the "rocks " . Looks ok if you take your time :-) What was your run/walk ratio?
really enjoyed this! Hope to do this sometime.
Awesome, glad you did! Welcome to the MTR community, JFK is a great race, you got this!
Thanks for a well-produced video of a great event. Are you running it this year? I just signed up - it will be my second time.
Thank you! No, not this year, just finished the Yeti 100 Miler so I am still in recovery…probably could get it in but …it’s not cheap😂😂
Love the video, you did great!
I know it’s 13 hour race but do you have timed stations along the way?
Thank you, There are cutoff at each aid station they are listed on the JFK website.
And the leaves are camouflage 🤨
That make it BERY hard to see the rocks and roots!
Beautiful, aromatic ankle turners!!

If you have run a marathon, you can do a 50 K but you can also do a 50 miler you’re just gonna go slower

I'm far more interested in hearing what you're saying than that annoying music. Good video otherwise, I guess.
