Hey everyone! Say hello to Rachel Watts, another new voice in our 3 Minute Review team! Her previous experience was the Reviews Editor over at Rock Paper Shotgun, so you'll be seeing more of her around The Escapist via 3MR soon!
This game was /incredible/. I was sure Armored Core 6 would be my game of the year, but it's BRC for me now. I absolutely tore through this game. The story, the skating, the graffiti, and oh my god the music.
If you don't like the combat, a good way to make it not as bad is to use launchers on the cops to end it quickly. Attack into Jump into Spray takes them out right away, usually in groups, instead of spamming attacks at them until they go down. Attack into Jump when on foot also acts as a high jump to get to some areas a normal jump won't.
Yeah the combat can be pretty interesting if you keep that in mind for the regular cops and adopt more hit and run tactics while skating around. Still not it's strong suit but the combat is alright for what it is and still feels a little more satisfying and impactful to dance/trick fight the cops instead of just spraying them like in JSR(F). Other than the handful of mandatory fights you can avoid combat for the most part if you want, which is nice.
Unironically my favorite game to come out this August. There's certainly massive, sprawling titles filled to the brim with high-quality graphics and content, but there's something charming about BRC's simple and straightforward presentation (coupled with the best soundtrack of any game this year) that made it such an easy game to just pick up and play, that I actually went out of my way to 100% it's achievements. Worth every hour and dime and I hope Team Reptile is keeping an eye on the mod scene to see what cool stuff people have been coming up with for future content.
After playing: it’s just legit fun. Finding a “heaven spot” is just as rewarding to get to as it is to bomb. The soundtrack is definitely the best thing I’ve heard in the past 10 years. This is legit fun to play and the core gameplay loop surprises me by not getting old, despite me expecting it too. The movement feels less like tony hawk, and more like mirrors edge. It’s easy to pick up, but rewards mastery. If this was just another jet set radio clone, it’s the best jet set clone in existence. This should be on every switch owned by someone older than 12.
you’d think that they would have called the city “neo-amsterdam” instead? as for the cyberpunk esthetic, it’s nice to see a sunshine version rather than an always rainy blade runner backdrop; it’s a nice touch. and lastly, this game isn’t simply “inspired” by JSR, it might have well be its spawn. still looks and sounds fun
One thing I love about old school skating/bmx games wasn’t the tricks but rather the lines you can make from combos. BRCF shines in that aspect and I hope Team Reptile’s next game makes this one feel like a tech demo cuz everything is already THERE
Yeah my thoughts exactly. It has great level design that allows you to do a single continuous combo throughout most of the levels. There's only two transitions in the game that don't allow you to do that I think. One is in Pyramid Island when getting to the middle section with all the sky rails and the other is the section in Mataan with the statue at the end of the river that spits you out at the elephant head part. I would love to see how they improve if they do a sequel to this.
Nice review, and welcome to the Escapist team! I freakin' loved this game! I took my time and finished the story in 12 hours, and i'm certainly gonna go back and try and unlock more characters and 100% each borough. My only gripe was that it felt a bit dry presentation-wise, with some pretty static story cutscenes and a dissapointingly dull opening 5-10 minutes, but i guess that could have been a time / budget thing. Love everything else about it though! The ability to skate, BMX or rollerblade around adds variety, the maps are huge and intricate, the controls improve upon JSR and even JSRF, and the sound and visuals are outstanding. Well done Team Reptile!
Played the entire game as soon as it released for switch, and holy crap its so nostalgic to JSRF. So glad they pulled this off yet put their own spin on it. Will definitely go in my book of one of those timeless games
@@therodmons2 Correct, the reason why is that this game is meant to be an homage to JSRF. For further context, the creative team of Bomb Rush got consent from Sega to create the game and even got assistance from the developers and the lead music composer who created JSRF.
Finally picked this up and really stoked to check it out. Will be big nostalgia vibes as I was working at SEGA when Jet Set Radio Future dropped on Xbox, and tested the hell out of that one. It was so much fun to test too!
Funny how this released around the same time as Sea of Stars, another indie game that wears its inspirations on its sleeve and also had music done by a composer from said games that inspired it. Of those 2 though, I'm more interested in this one.
Jesus Christ dude chill, the game was just released a week ago.. You already have a good Jet Set Radio successor.. Team Reptile might be doing a few expansions.
a great review from rachel very happy to hear her voice I am sure she will be a fine addition to the team and as a person who remembers jet set radio fondly I am happy to know this game exists I will be supporting it!
Not sure if this game is for me or not. I played a bit of Jet Set Radio Future a friend had, and I thought the grinding was kind of silly. The challenge in THPS is really what draws me in. The soundtrack might be enough to get me in though. Good review, welcome!
JSR on Dreamcast was one of my favourite game and i spent hours playing it and I kinda want give this one a shot it looks Ike they've captured the vibe from original game
glad this review didn't just pass this off as "just more jsr" like a lot of reviews of this game I've seen. if you see dion talk about the game you'll really see that yes it's definitely meant to be a celebration of that kind of street culture. also worth mentioning the rest of the artists on the OST
I love cyberfunk and jet set radio because they're a cyberpunk future thats not actually grim, terrible and depressing. In cyberpunk 2077 theres some pretty grim missions and its overall a world I wouldn't want to live in. In cyberfunk however the worst crimes are graffiti and everythings upbeat and funky.
Six months from now, this game is gonna blow the FUCK up in a manner similar to Friday Night Fuckface, and Naganuma's gonna be slamdunking e-girl poon left and right, mark my words
Six months later on the dot, and the modding community has figured out how to add entire new levels - mostly from JSR and Sonic. Dozens of players hang out in each level’s online multiplayer, having score battles and races, or just dancing to the ost. I’d say you nailed it :D
They copied off of so many locations in the JSRF game. But the funniest part is that the game looks graphically less impressive than Jet Set Radio Future that came out in 2002. Imagine that? Sounds like a Spiritual failure than sucessor to me.
Played an hour of this crappy game tonight. Cannot beat the time mission to win over some team. Awful controls, awful trick system. Indie games are the problem.

She has a very pleasing voice, a great fit for these!
Excellent reviewer! Glad to see a new addition
Welcome! Can't wait to see and hear more 3MR!
Hello Rachel :D
Will she be joining the weekend streams?
Okay, the line about the MTV music video is compelling. Recapturing that energy, if only for a moment, is something I haven't seen in a while...
I I was caught of guard because that's my perfect recipe, like slim shady Vs Nate Dogg a track about the club

i hear it’s like JSRF on steroids . can’t wait ! i’m buying it tonight !
This review passed the vibe check
🎯💯
It's a masterpiece and keeping the genre alive

Dig the review and the style Rachel ☺️ Welcome and thanks for playing 🙏 Cheers! 🍻
I _adore_ both the Lethal League games so glad to hear Team Reptile have kept up the quality with Cyberfunk!
fr, team reptile only take W's when making games
When she mentions that old late night MTV vibe I’m sure she’s referring to Aeon Flux, good times.

Basically my exact thoughts, you can feel the love they put into this game

It's great to give Hideki Naganuma the shoutout he deserves, but he only did 3-ish tracks in the game, there's countless composers at playhere! =)

Jet set radio future of this generation. Even some levels looked ripped from the original game.
It’s such an insanely fun game when you really vibe with it. If you get it you get it if you don’t you weren’t supposed to.

When I saw it, I was like this looks just like .......jsrf ..played on xbox

@@TheUnknownGoat1 yep, I'm getting this....
That's a wonderful review, oozing personality! So happy Rachel has joined the team:)
I'm legitimately excited. It would be cool to just detatch and play this on a day off and remember the early 2000s.
sounds like the perfect off day.... ain't nothing like those days
Finally picked this up and really stoked to check it out. Will be big nostalgia vibes as I was working at SEGA when Jet Set Radio Future dropped on Xbox, and tested the hell out of that one. It was so much fun to test too!
Actually really solid review. Nice to see people acknowledge this as more than a JSR throwback

Best OST of the year is a bold claim for the year that both Pizza Tower and Hi-Fi Rush came out.
Best year for OSTs then
Hi-fi rush is like the rock version of Jet set radio
Welcome Rachel. A fantastic 3MR and great addition to the team! First of many I hope!
It's better than I hoped it'd be, almost to the point where I'd be worried about a future JSR game not living up to the originals or BRC
Time for a funky beat
i cant wait for a sequel. hopefully. please, team reptile !!
Jesus Christ dude chill, the game was just released a week ago..
You already have a good Jet Set Radio successor..
Team Reptile might be doing a few expansions.
Bro doesn't play videogames he just like waiting for the sequels
a great review from rachel very happy to hear her voice I am sure she will be a fine addition to the team and as a person who remembers jet set radio fondly I am happy to know this game exists I will be supporting it!
Hell yeah! I loved Jet Set Radio Future!
really cool review! you could really feel how much she loved the game. thats cool

So happy this game is actually fabulous ♡
Hey Rachel was great over at RPS. Welcome!
Saw this in an ad and immediately thught JSRF. Man, this brings back memories and looks like itll establish its own.
The only "negative" I can say for BRC is that I just wanted more of it.
This is the cyberpunk we wanted
The music is so good.
Really enjoyed Rachel Watts personality in this. 👍
JSR on Dreamcast was one of my favourite game and i spent hours playing it and I kinda want give this one a shot it looks Ike they've captured the vibe from original game
I and every other elder millenial who played JSRF in 2002 feel like 21 years is long enough to make this feel fresh.
Points off for no DJ Professor K😢
Today I got a combo of x222 and almost 30 million points off of a single series of tricks.
So yes, I'd say it's a very good game.
glad this review didn't just pass this off as "just more jsr" like a lot of reviews of this game I've seen. if you see dion talk about the game you'll really see that yes it's definitely meant to be a celebration of that kind of street culture. also worth mentioning the rest of the artists on the OST
I didn't even know this had come out. Great review
I like this reviewer, an interesting well informed review, I might check the game out and it's not my normal go to.
So excited to try this
Im so glad this is a good game, i really want to play it when i get the time/money to pick it up
2:51 omg yes ik EXACTLY what you're talking about. that's it i'm buying this game
now me wants. Great Review!
Gonna def grab this one at some point
This woman called JSR a hood classic. Let’s go.
I love cyberfunk and jet set radio because they're a cyberpunk future thats not actually grim, terrible and depressing.

I Need to Get This Game! 😊
Why no mention of the Xbox version?
I miss JSRF so much and I hope that this game satiates that if I can play it.
Coming to Xbox as well on September 1st
Yes Rachel!
this is literally jet set radio future! but new!! need to play this
They should have kept the tagging system from JSRF.
Jsrf is great but I really feel like this game outdoes it in almost every way. If it had like 2 more levels it would be perfect
I’m really curious what other reviewers would require for this game to push into the high 9s. Like, what would it really take???😂
Six months from now, this game is gonna blow the FUCK up in a manner similar to Friday Night Fuckface, and Naganuma's gonna be slamdunking e-girl poon left and right, mark my words

Its a JETSET RADIO in a new shell
it's so good dude
It really is a fantastic game.
I only can say: JET SET RADIO!!!
Isn't this.. Jet Set Radio Future?) :D
This was a good review, but I wish it got a zero punctuation just because I want as many eyes on this game as possible
Im to old for games like this , been in 90 s. Thanks, that looks like shit.
Hello Rachel Watts. When do we get to see you ? My cats also said hi :)) ;)
It needs to drop for Android & iOS otherwise it's not gonna survive long
said no one ever
GOTY
V funki
I'm so sad that Yahtzee isn't covering it. Nothing against Rachel, just that it means that BRC is ineligible for best of the year from Yahtzee.
Just because we covered on 3MR doesn't mean Yahtzee isn't going to also do it.

Great review! You’ve convinced to grab it!
This and ac6 are the most fun game i played this year
