- Hand paddles are the real deal and allow you to completely skip learning to stand up paddle for down winding. This was my very first time paddling in ocean bumps in 20 knots of wind and I was using a never before ridden 6’6” @ 96L DW board (thanks for the lend @oskarfoil) with a 1050cm2 foil. Once you dial your board and mast position in, it’s relatively easy, so hopefully this inspires other people to get some hand paddles and give it a crack! It would be even easier with a longer narrower board and a bigger front wing! Pretty damn pumped right now!
This is epic, super inspired to give the hand paddles a go now!
Yeh man, its such a cheat code! Opens up the whole ocean!
I like the down wind stuff on the open ocean.
Good fun isn’t it!
Awesome!! Do you prefer hand paddles than the normal ones?
I prefer the webbed gloves because my hand paddles are too big so they kind of overpower my stroke. I need to cut them down and try that. 🤙🏼
Do you think you could get back up with the hand paddles after a crash out there?
Yeh that’s the whole point. I was already 2km offshore and started in an ocean bump just like you would with a sup paddle. It’s a cheat code for sure!
What do you think the sweet spot in terms of board width would be for a hand paddle prone board? Just wondering if there's a point where too narrow won't allow you to get the leverage on the foil (if a wider foil)?
I’ve gone down to 17” but I think 18” is the sweet spot for kneeling on the board. 8’0+ x 18 is the go!
I was going to ask about the board but you've already answered excellently in the comments. Carrying a paddle looks pretty awkward in comparison to the gloves. Obviously, more freedom for the body. By the way, what do we call this? Hand paddle foil surfing?
Yeh the hand paddle is the way if you want to get into down wind foiling. I would call it down wind foiling. 🤙🏼
ALL the prone rippers gonna be scoring soon!
Awwww yeah, with the right conditions, it’s a piece of cake!
Isso é um e-foil?
Haha
Sweet. Have you tried prone paddling (no handles) a board that long for DW?
Yeh I tried this day but the board design wasn’t there and bumps weren’t big enough. If I was on a 7’0+ x 17” wide, it would totally be possible. But this board was too short and wide so it wouldn’t get planing fast enough without the hand paddles. Long and narrow is key for prone DW!
@@misterbennetts you leaning towards knee paddle DW or prone DW in future?
@@fitnessandinjury prob kneeling because it’s easier to get up because you get more leverage on your strokes and you get 2 for the price of one. So it’s way easier to catch the bumps.
Are you planning on picking up a paddle, or is this your go to from now on? Starting my downwind journey shortly, no sup experience but coming from prone, looked like a sick run!
Definitely not picking up a paddle. This is the reason I got these hand paddles so I could skip the whole sup thing. This is me starting my down wind journey too as this was my very first time paddling into ocean bumps on a borrowed board. So it’s proof the hand paddles work. Just gotta get your board dialled in. Long and narrow is key!
@@misterbennetts great insight thanks a ton, probably easier to paddle out to the wind line also, instead of with the paddles on your knees!!

@@misterbennetts long and narrow is the key, that’s not what she said 🤪
Where did you buy your handpaddles dude?
@@nicolas_vuillehaha. Got them from @handpaddleco on Insta. But I did find them to be a little big so they’ll need cutting down. I actually prefer using webbed gloves now 🤙🏼
What type/brand hand paddles are you using? Thanks!
I’m using @handpaddleco on Insta 🤙🏼
I’m buying three different pairs of -$25US webbed gloves to test.
Where did you buy your hand paddles from?
For them from @handpaddleco on Insta 🤙🏼
@@misterbennetts thanks! I saw you say you've got a 7' x 17" board coming in soon. Did you go with a custom board?
@@spencerrussell3351 yep, get it this week 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
It's hard to believe this is even physically possible. What a great invention!
Crazy isn’t it! Imagine when this spot is 10-20 years in. Right now we are only a few years in. It’s gonna be wild!
@@misterbennetts it's the surfing version of electric cars , they are the future

So sick! Do you need to size up your foil to paddle in with the hand paddles vs sup?
I think the most important thing in prone down winding (in ocean bumps) is board design. Longer narrower boards will paddle and plane way easier. In this clip, i was on a 1050cm2 MA foil which I would also use to prone down wind my 4’3” prone board (from a chip in wave in the shore break). For sure it would have been way easier to get up with a bigger foil, but once you’re on foil it’s not as fun becuse it’s slower and less maneuverable. I think a longer narrower board would have made it just as easy instead of sizing up in foils. So to answer your question, I don’t think you need to size up compared to SUP, if anything, you could actually size down if you have the right board 🤙🏼
@@misterbennetts Epic. How narrow is your board here? I’m on a 6’9 which is 22.5” but maybe not skinny enough for paddles
@@martymulcahy9485 This board is 6'6" x 20" and felt too wide. I've got a 7'0" x 17" coming. I think that will be pretty on the money!
It helps if you also weigh 65 kg.
1050 ma foil, what brand (mast is F One) any detail
. Thanks. ....great!
Epic run bro. Keen to try it, SUP paddling looks way too frustrating.
Yeh honestly with the right board, you don’t need a SUP paddle ever. It’s so easy on the knees!
Anyway you twist it...its still a motorized sport.
Downwinding means using a car etc. to get back where you started.
Haha classic
Better to use a classic car like a '59 caddy, prolly 7mpg.
Some take a wing on their backpack
Inspiring. Love that you use it to travel.
So much fun!
Where can we buy these hand paddles?
Check out hand paddle co on Insta 🤙🏼
I had a very interesting first experienced with my new downwind board - a 8'2" dragonfly with a naish 2460 foil. The buoyancy of the foil made the board unstable. and it was flipping. so now im looking for a smaller foil but big enough to fly me.
Yeh that’s the secret with the longer boards, you can ride a way smaller foil 👍🏼
Firstly, awesome video. I’ve been interested in D/Wing for a while…But, when the conditions are great for downwind, they’re also great for winging. I get that there’s less equipment, but is it really more fun than being out on a wing? Also, are there other applications for a d/w board? Does it fit in a winger’s quiver? Thanks!!
There’s nothing quite like being out in the middle of ocean with no equipment. The Adrenalin is wild. It’s the best feeling ever; way better than winging. In my opinion; winging is only fun if it’s light wind and there’s waves. 🤙🏼
@Mister Bennetts I'm obsessed with wingfoiling but haven't tried it as yet. I've only recently heard of down wind finding your videos., (which are great!) Your philosophy for DW is a philosophy for life! In a way DW looks easier as you just have to get going and not worry about how to sail in the conventional sense. It all looks fun to me though, and I've no idea where in Europe you can do this but I'm sure there's places! Please do a full introduction to what DW is and add in your take on the paddles. As a swimmer it looks pretty straightforward but I'm sure it's taken a ton of practice to get comfortable.
Yeh so down winding with a wing is easy because you have unlimited power, but down winding unassisted is a whole other ball game.
You have to be able to paddle up on foil which is the first skill set required to be able to read the ocean bumps and paddle at the right time to get just enough speed to get on foil.
Then, you have to read the ocean and ride the ocean bumps until they run out and then pin ball between them all.
It’s definitely the hardest form of foiling by a long shot and it’s far from easy haha
@@misterbennetts yeah I think you just make it look easy! I'm a long way from doing this or anything close, but it's great inspiration.
Yeh it’s definitely tricky. But worth getting into for sure. Try it with the wing first so you have a safety net when you come off foil!
Mister Bennetts would at a guess with about 65 kg!
I’m actually 80kg and 6’0” and there are guys who are 90kg+ doing the same thing. With the right equipment it’s all possible 😃
What an absolute legend! Inspiring the future of foiling. I'm convinced to buy a DW board and get some hand paddles. I've even heard some guys say DW board works well for light wind winging.
Yeh man. I’m dropping a new DW video on Monday using webbed gloves. You don’t need a SUP paddle at all. If you have the right board and webbed gloves or hand paddles it’s so much easier! Keep an eye out for my new video next week 🤙🏼
@@misterbennettsI’ve got the board. I’ve tried in marginal conditions with just regular hands. Needed a pretty sizable bump.
Ordering hand paddles. Just wanna send it like you guys 🔥
Yeh man. No need for a paddle. I paddled up an 800cm2 wing today in about 15 knots. Pretty sick. Have a look at these gloves, they are sick!
