Last year i bought my own P71 and had it imported to Norway, mine is a red 2001 P71 with the civilian appearance package with 118k miles, it's been used by a fire department and driven by the fire chief the last 20 years, detailed service history, absolutely rust free but some sun damage on the paint, clean light colored interior with bench seats in the front, cloth seats in the rear and light colored carpet as well. Mine has all the original lights as cars imported here gets a note in the paperwork saying they are street legal here with the factory lights. I've been watching through this playlist the last few days and it's been good fun watching the updates of your own car.
Years ago, when I was young I would not give in. The problem now old, (80) I still have have the same stubbornness. I will not be beaten. Just adds days to a job I no longer afford. But bugger it , I don’t let it beat me. Lol. Satisfaction is a greater feeling than defeat.

Krown Rustproofing is the way to go. The English climate may be damper than Ohio, but the amount of salt and sand used on the roads in Ohio, like all the North-East USA and the Canadian Provinces, is by far worse thank anything the British climate could do with the possible exception of the Outer Hebrides or the Isles of Scilly with the salt air.
I feel your pain too and have the greatest admiration for your perseverance in less than ideal circumstances. I would have let the MOT garage sort it. But frustrating though it is for you it makes for interesting content. Good luck with it.

Matt, I love the highs and lows of your mechanical mishaps and car-lamities. However, I think it would be easier...you know, operating your camera, editing your material, and just life in general really - if you had ALL of your fingers! Sometimes your approach to risk management is a bit non-existent. I don't think Draper's image would be helped at all by an impromptu digital amputation by grinder! Take care.
Matt, as awesome as the Car Wizard is you really don't need your own! This format works wonders as it is. Good luck with the parking brake, I'm sure you'll crack it soon enough!
Here is the difference between you and Hoovie, make if it what you will: I watch every one of your videos and enjoy them greatly. I stopped watching Hoovie and unsubscribed because he became an idiotic one trick pony. Keep working on that car. It appears you may have the instructions from the Haynes Manual. While good for some things, the Chilton's is miles better for the Panther cars.
When you get shock absorbers, find the Ford gas shocks specific to the P71 suspension. The car will ride softer but handle better. Next best is the KYB. Ford made 4 different suspension packages for that generation of Panther, each with specific dampers. The aftermarket offers 2, neither of which is quite right

This is the first video I've seen that truly showcases detail and demonstration addressing the parking brake cable, there are others but they're more along the lines of before and after with no in-between. Good video, I definitely learned a few things like that the C-clips exist. I plan on swapping my rear end this summer with a factory limited slip. Much easier and cheaper than having someone install one. The parking brake cable and the wheel speed sensor were truly the only things that gave me any difficulties when I removed the rear end from my old car last year. (It got rear ended unfortunately) I found another Vic but it is open diff. Gave me the chance to completely resto the rear axle and paint it with POR15. It looks beautiful, can't wait to put it on. I did notice though that your old parking brake was originally between the control arms and the new one you put on was under them at the end. Maybe that is the source of your length problem?

Nothing is ever as easy as appears in my book when doing DIY on cars, especially as they get older. Good luck finishing this task Matt. Have you considered buying a set of those scissor lifts so the whole car is off the floor?

Was going to say when I saw this I bet it has seized because the Americans never used it! Only time it's essential is on a hill, if you don't you can lock up (and ruin) the gearbox. Seen it happen to a Range Rover once, and from what I heard in the following weeks, the bill to sort it was somewhat huge!
Whilst drivers of automatics don't use the "parking brake", they should be aware if the "emergency brake" is non-functional! 🙂
To add to my older comment, I will suggest that you take a small drill bit and drill a couple of small holes into the underside of the side market lights, tail lights and headlights. This allows any water that gets in to drain out and not puddle inside the light housing. Some US cars have drain holes but they are towards the back of the housing and are not as effective to get the water out that is hanging around at the bottom of the front of the lights. That split seal is more of a cosmetic thing then a way to keep water out. you could probably just reuse your existing one that is on the OEM light. Conversely, you could probably add a couple of small drill holes to the base of the original market light and let the water drain out of it and just keep using the original one instead of replacing it for that Rock Auto one.
As for the check engine light. Don't UK cars turn the light on if there is a filler cap issue? Most of them suffer from that rubber seal having issues. As for why the caps are on a tether, it is because we Americans tend to drive off with them sitting on the trunk or left on the gas pump itself. They are easily replaceable because a gas cap will fail and needs to be easily replaceable.
For drum brakes, you should have both tires removed and both drum brakes exposed so you can use the side you did not disassemble as a template to put the side you did disassemble back together. To be fair, I hate drum brakes with a passion. On my Hyundai, I will just spend the extra money and let the dealer take care of it. If it was a disc then i would do it myself. Remember that with American cars, you compress the rear brake piston with a tool that turns the piston while pushing it in. You cannot take the big C Clamp and compress them in like you do with the front ones.
I've done the same thing with several General Motors car, but have never had to do it to a modern Ford.

Autos have handbrakes because leaving them in park without the brake fks the transmission.

Thanks for the video. I recently bought an '08 CV. My brake cable is in reasonably good shape (nick 😉) my issue is likely the shoes. I have fair mechanical abilities but after watching this I'm taking your advice and bringing to my local mechanic.
Turns out it is the shoes, also the cable broke away from the passenger side. replacing the one cable and all shoes comes to $600.00 (U.S.). It's a lot of labor just getting to the parking brakes. Not thrilled by it but it would take me so much longer, and it's the middle of winter here, so... I suppose it's a fair-ish trade.
I feel your pain been struggling with stuck brake rotor all day, must be something in the Maidstone air !

I took the whole front off my Kia proceed diesel doing mine the first time and took me most of the day, it was also baltic out and I was frozen stiff 😭

this is why i always buy the fitting kit with new springs and clips etc when doing brakes, it makes the reassembly so much easer and you dont have to spend ages looking for the spring clip that has shot off!! it may pay to put copper grease or white lithium grease in the cable connector so if you need to dissemble it , it should not be such a struggle , good luck completing and getting a ticket on it
A simple case of use it or loose it l always use the hand brake when ever l park any vehicle l have driven or owned also put it in gear or park in an automatic infact in our 2021 Suzuki Beleno if you put it in park its an automatic and the hand brake on the car objects lights go its beeps at you it goes crazy

Don't worry, I got thrashed by a Peugeot 207 handbrake cable. Horrible job. It's the simple stuff that gets you. No more handbrake turns at the moment then! Would it have been easier to pop the driveshaft out?

One should use parking brake with auto trans. Especially when parking on a slope. Parking "lock",is just a thin piece of metal and that breaking inside the transmission is not good. Yes it's very rare. And the handbrake should be used or it will seize up or dissapear into a rust cloud like this one.
And if you want to be sure the weight of the vehicle is on the brakes and not the transmission. You put the tranny on N, engage parking brake, lift foot brake, engage foot brake and shift to park.
Its also a good practise to engage the parking for a 10m or so when you come parking home, work or shopping once in a while. Prevents them corroding and seizing up. Mainly just use them once in a while.
This also applies to manual transmissions with a dual mass flywheel. You want to leave the vehicle rest on brakes, or it will shorten the life of the springs in the flywheel.
Proper assessment of parking brake use in the U.S. LOL....
Rusted shut lever/spreader is standard on the cable end between the shoes. I've had to sandblast them, 5:56/WD40 them and made them work, just to seize for the next years MOT here.
Don't just hook your new cables on the rusted seized spreader that is there to push the shoes part, and loosen the adjuster at the parking lever/pedal before adjusting shoes. Then you cab adjust the whole system by the lever/pedal as the brakeshoes get worn.
I have my Hyundai Santa Fe 2001 on supports in my yard since last summer, awaiting the very same work of switching cables, brakeshoes, discs and pads, not a work I'm looking forward to. I have battled many parking brakes in my days and on a driven axle, there is allways the driveshaft in the way. But I have about a meter of snow in the way so it is a work for June!
Inboard drum handbrake shoes can be a right pain , merc sprinter ones can make you cry

Drum brakes SUUUUUUUUUCK. Even parking brakes. It just took me TWO DAYS to change the shoes on a 2011 Camry with no real rust issues. It was just meant to be 'oh, while I'm changing the warped rotors, why not change the shoes?' type of job, as I'm a rare American that actually uses the parking brake every time (though I do hate it's a floor pedal push-on, push off style).
What a crazy brake system. Even with no auto-adjusting ratchet system on backing up (it never worked that great), each drum still has five springs to function. By far, the worst ones were the hold down springs retained by slotted top cups retained in place by the pins passing thru the backing plate (actually called nails, BTW). On older service drum brakes, the hold down springs are the easiest part, but not on a modern car with a flanged bearing assembly: no straight shot. At least the rectangular style like on this Vic, you can grab hold of their sides, compress them, and turn them with needle nose pliers. Or turn the nails 90 degrees with a second set of needle pliers.
Not on circular hold downs. I barely had room (and strength) to push in on the top caps with both thumbs while rotating them 90 after passing the nail ends thru the slot. I finally had to use a deep c-clamp to hold the pins rigid and pushed in place to not be disturbed by the compressed spring and top cap. My fingers are still slightly swollen and painful. In retrospect, I should have gone off-book and just removed the entire wheel hub assemblies. I then could have completely rebuilt the parking brakes on the bare backing plates.
The reason the parking brake is tested is indeed safety, if for what ever you service brake system fails you have an emergency back up in the form of the parking brake, which is why electronic parking brakes should never of been invented and should be banned (coming from being me an MOT tester as well) any way please keep using the parking as it does stop cables, clevis pins and self adjusters and stuff from seizing up
Count on buying assemblies for the reason you used the angle grinder. When rust is winning, the grinder ends the debate. Just remember to buy a little more than you anticipate. There is nothing quite as frustrating as retrofit of new parts in cooperation with the old ones. Just bought a 2002 Crown Vic and looking forward to making it my own.

Handbrake cables are an absolute nightmare. Had to change them on my mum's Mk6 Golf. Was having the problem of getting them stretched out enough to get them hooked on.
I have to admit that I had a few good laughs watching this video, but in the end I also have to admit that "You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din" as I would have given up on that job and passed it onto a mechanic with some experience on useless handbrakes on American cars!!
People who live in flat places don’t use parking brakes, but we who live where there is no flatness do use the parking brake. One can’t generalize.

My daily is my 1999 E38 And i never use the foot break always put it in park its very bad it puts a strain on my box but i do it . bad habbitt. guy bolton .

A word of advice when using park in auto geraboxes, The pin used to stop the car rolling can fail in the box, It's better to use the parking break and taking the tension of the little pin in the box.

I despair of American drivers! I was watching a Mustie 1 video about a VW camper his dad was using. His dad managed to crush himself between 2 vehicles and break a rib when a charger cable caught on the VW gear lever and knocked it out of park (on a slope).
The definition of hell? Setting the handbrake on a Rover SD1......
Only took me 3half days to do the rear pads,shoes and discs on my Kia proceed diesel, I broke a shoe in the struggle and had to order more 😭 the driver side was strangely rustier than the near side 🤔. The dremil helped cut a slot in the disc retaining screws (4 of them ffs) I also knelt on a nut😖

Few people are aware that an automatic should not be left only in P. The handbrake should be applied first and the P engaged, otherwise major damage occurs
typical americans. drive literally everywhere but skip steps for pure convinience.
That is the Ideal and correct method but major damage is not guaranteed if you don't follow it as thousands of lazy owners will attest to.

Furious, have you got a hydraulic car ramp, to lift car high up? I've seen 2 post ramps going for under £2k. Alot I know, but would make things easier. Also, I find knee pads really help me when doing car jobs.

Doesn't the handbrake cable go over the top of the trailing arm, not underneath? That might be why you don't have enough cable.

Its a point of contact when you do your own work as so many of your audience will be doing the same thing. Certainly a draw for me. And confirmation bias is a bugger, Hoovies Garage may be a slick £££ operation with a vast array of must see cars but for home mechanics on the driveway the approach of the likes of "L R Time" is more aspirational.
It always seems those 'simple' jobs take the longest and cause the most frustration. When I was younger living in a big city I lost count how many times I had to hop on my bike to go to the parts dealer to get yet another tool and a replacement part that had undergone some unintended modification during the work. Some days I think I made negative progress. I hate to think how long a 4 day workshop job would take doing it ourselves, we'd possibly have to write up a journal so the next generation (or two) so they could finish it. Refuel with a fresh piping hot mug of tea. I hope you keep this format Matt as it helps the rest of us to decide on what method of persuasion (a bigger hammer?) is worth trying for similar issues. the friction material breaks apart with age. These handnt been used in the US so survived and worked briefly but as soon as I started using regularly they crumbled

put it both ways while trial fitting but theres a fixed anchor in the middle which regulates the length either side
The American parking brake is operated by foot and released by hand. There is no hand brake between the front seats as in British vehicles.
Aka Mercedes W124 and W123
Bentleys among other British cars used to put the hand brake between the seat and door, between the seats wasnt always standard
Corvettes were one of the few American cars with a handbrake between the seats.
No, most Chryslers used hand brakes, like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Wagoneer, Dodge Dart, Neon, Probe, Chrysler Sebring. Jeep Wrangler is still hand brake today. Sporty American cars also had a hand brake from all 3. As mentioned, the Corvette, but also Chevy Beretta, Camaro. Ford Mustang is still hand brake today.
Also, they weren't all hand release. Many were push-on push-off. GM through the 2000's, and a lot of Chryslers till they went electronic. I think Ford was the only one who didn't use push-on push-off.

@@furiousdriving If the leak's not too bad, you might be able to get away with just frequently checking and topping up the tennis ball reservoir.
Don't forget to clean and grease the brake shoe contact points on the hub back plate.
Side cutters to hold the brake shoe springs... Even then they are a pain. 😅
I was halfway through the video thinking about the way Hoovie does it and how much each video runs like an episode.
Another good one is High Peak Autos. He seems to take an old car in part-ex. Get the work done and present the completed car. His channel seems to be flying. I realise that’s not what you’re all about but maybe it would help on some repairs.
Also in my opinion it would be nice to see the cars used for fun as well as just repairing them.

I find it hilarious that Euro Car Parts is known internationally - for supplying parts made of cheese, or parts that don't show up after six weeks and several hour-long phone calls to chase them up (which happened to me).
Mostly ECP are known for sending the wrong parts!
Frustration, peril, freezing cold, bleeding knuckles, nothing working. It does make a better video not going to lie. It's not that we're all sadists but this is the reality of working on cars and we want to see reality. Otherwise we'd be watching Richard Hammond on Amazon. Why not get proper green incandescent bulbs? I bought some for my US 1968 VW Bus off Ebay.

Modern means to me nearly everything after at least the late '90s. Not that I can't fix them, but it sucks. To work on them while get paid, ok. But for myself, no thanks. Everything is better organized and easier on old cars, as older as better...

Forgot to say that this might just help your MPG after all that time with a seized parking brake cable ,that's why the shoe is worn away to nothing wait till you get to the other side and do a comparison

Yes, definitely the right way around, they are very different so cant be mixed up. Rock Auto are generally better than Euro Car Parts for getting things right!

You are right about parking brake use in the USA. Most folks don't use it. However most of the USA is flat so there is no need to use them. I had trouble with them being frozen to the drum on one of my cars one winter day when I was at work and had to get a ride home. I never used them since. For my automatic cars i put it in park. For my manual trans cars, i leave the shifter in 1st. I have ripped into garages or the state emission test center if I find they applied the parking brake on the car after i have told them not to.
Sadly there are many steep hills in the UK and if the hydraulic brakes fail on an automatic transmission car there's no gears/clutch/engine braking to help slow you down, so having a healthy functioning parking brake could come to the rescue one day god forbid, heaven forfend, saints preserve us! 🙏🙏🙏
