    The man playing Rand's father was in GoT. Knowing both stories, he went from playing the worst father in fantasy television, to playing the absolute best. Tam al'Thor in the books was wonderful.

    WoT was direct inspiration for GoT. Wheel of time had 7 books when Martin published the first Novel in Song of Fire and Ice. In wheel of time there is something called Daes Dae'mar, which translates directly as The Great Game or The Game of Houses. Basically the concept which Martin based his series on.

    The era is both our future and our past. Time is cyclical in this world.

    • @charlestruppi7793
      @charlestruppi7793 3 роки тому +20

      But it doesn’t repeat exactly. The themes and archetypes remain the same. So it’s not like the next turning of the wheel is us back here in our bodies. Robert Jordan based this in some Eastern philosophies and religions. They overplay the “reincarnation” aspect on the show a lot more than it was in the books. People in the books didn’t walk around thinking and talking about reincarnation that much.

      It's more specifically our future as we exist in the 1st age, the 2nd age was the age of legends and the subsequent breaking of the world, and the story takes place in the 3rd age, so thousands of years from now in a post-apocalyptic version of Earth.

      @RuggerJogs If you expected a scene by scene recreation of the books that's your own fault. Adaptations don't work like that. If you want the books exactly as they are, just go read the books

    • @lolroflundxd
      @lolroflundxd 3 роки тому +20

      @RuggerJogs For an adaptation, this is pretty close to the book. The change with the wife might even be for the better, Perrins tendencys weren't that well motivated in the book. Now one change with the "whos the chosen one", obviously makes no sense (but I don't want to spoiler).

    • @jaffrojones4269
      @jaffrojones4269 3 роки тому +27

      @@lolroflundxd yeah, even if they changed more stuff, the heart of the story is still there. Think about this. Instead of all the inner diologue that Perrin goes through about hating the axe, he will now instantly hate using it even as he's forced to do so because of what happened. Boom, 300 pages of Perrin whining gone.

    Something that struck me about the scene with Perrin killing his wife, upon second watching, is that she also seems to be about to kill him. So the time is technically a post-apocalyptic future earth... with elemental magic! 😁 I won't spoil any future stuff, but it's definitely helpful to understand the context of the world.
    I love the way they're doing the show! And the books have lots of diversity of characters, and they're doing such a great job showing that. Within the world they certainly discriminate against various groups and nationalities, but it's refreshing to see it play out differently than it does in our everyday life.

    It will be hard to answer your questions without giving spoilers. Some things may become more clear as you get into the series. Still some things I think we can answer without spoiling things. A Wisdom is the leader of the village Women's Circle. The primary function of Circles is to establish and maintain social protocols within Two Rivers culture. A young woman in the Two Rivers is not allowed to Braid her hair until members of the local Women's Circle have decided that she is of marriageable age. When weddings do occur, members of the Circle stand as witnesses while the local Wisdom performs the ceremony. Members of the Circle convene when villagers break with social norms; such as when a youth is caught misbehaving or if two young women are fighting over a local boy. They will also gather to settle non-property related disputes among folk.

    Loving your reaction man. Also when she was throwing those bricks, I think she was actually using Earth bending. Because I remember hearing Moiraine in the books was weaker and drained herself in this fight using fire and Earth bending to finally put down the those trollocs. Also heard in the books Moiraine was out of commission because she needed proper rest to restore her powers which she wasn't able to do due to constantly being on the move while TV show Moiraine was outright injured from the fight.

    "Who's the Chosen one?"
    That is not really verified until the end of the first book, which will probably be near the end of the first season here (I think they said a total of 8 episodes for season 1). But yes it is one of those four! Won't say more =D

    I have read all the novels. Actually have read them several times over. That being said, I am very much enjoying the series so far. It does change things from the books, some little some large. Ages, relationships, and even some of the backgrounds. Mat's Parents for example are MUCH different in the series than in the books. We are not even introduced to Perrin's. The story about the wisdom before Nynaeve also seems a little off as the Aes Sedai were kind of like the Jedi in that they pretty much took anyone with the hint of the power regardless of standing.
    -
    The change they made to Mat's parents is likely to fuel his storyline a bit more and I can see why they may have done this in the series.
    -
    Perring being married is a HUGE change, but the way it plays out with his actions and what he has to live with after actually works well to push his story along as well.
    -
    They obviously cut a lot of scenes from the book and altered the timeline a bit with introducing certain characters. However, this does not damage the storyline and is expected when you understand that they are trying to fit 12 books into season arcs.
    -
    So despite the changes, in my opinion, they are not egregious enough to detract from the series and in some ways add value to the storyline.
    -
    What I can appreciate is the high production value. The scenery is gorgeous. The costume design is on point. The trollocs look very good(Though I wanted to see some with bird's heads). I also appreciate that the dialogue fits the world and they are not using contemporary dialogue with words that you would not expect to find in this world. I mention this because Shannara Chronicles makes this mistake and the way the characters speak makes them sound like they are in some American High School in that series.
    -
    Some minor complaints that I have is that I wish they had shown Rand's struggle to get his father back to the village. Lan also took much more note of the Heron-marked blade that a farmer possesses. The camera did show the Heron mark once in this episode, but unless you have read the books, you will not know what it means. I think they could have spared a scene to include the notice Lan takes of that blade and how he then takes more of an interest in Rand.
    -
    Another minor complaint is that the horses in the books get much more love. Especially Bella and Mandarb. Bella is also supposed to be an older farm horse and the fact she was keeping pace with the warhorse Mandarb and the other steeds actually ends up being an important part of the story in the books. We will see if the series makes use of it later, but it would be kind of confusing now since they did not really make any point of importance to these animals.
    -
    Purists of the book, well there will be no pleasing them. So anyone who right away complains that the show is awful because it is not exactly like the book does not understand what is involved in translating novels that are hundreds of pages into a screenplay. There have been some truly atrocious novel to screen adaptations, Sword of truth and Shannara Chronicles are two of the worst.
    -
    Overall I am quite pleased with how they are running the series and a lot of the misandry that Robert Jordan has in his books, is absent here. Not all of it, as some of it is actually pertinent to the story since as they explained it was men who broke the world. But Robert Jordan made it clear throughout ALL the books how little he thought of men's intelligence. Making it clear that certain men were rare exceptions. The rivalry between the Women's Circle( all women) and the Village Council (all men) has not even been brought up in the series and in fact they never even mention the village council or introduce some of the characters in it, one of who is a crotchety old man that is often portrayed as a stubborn old fool but is shown that he cares for the village and the people.
    -
    We have a long way to go and while the series does not follow the book to the letter. It has so far maintained the spirit of the story and seems to be working in good faith to preserve the essence of the storyline. I think purists of the book should find the differences as reasons to discuss and share, rather than detract from what seems to be a very good production of a difficult story to tackle.

    • @lanceb247Upload
      @lanceb247Upload 3 роки тому +2

      Great dialogue on the differences and reasons for them! I very much agree that I wish they’d included some of the dialogue between Rand and Tam when he was delusional with the poison… then again, they can probably still use it as a flashback or something later on.

    • @brigitmurray7793
      @brigitmurray7793 3 роки тому +2

      With regard to some of the missing elements of the story such as the significance of the heron mark sword, Rand dragging the cart with his babbling father back to the village, and so on might come as flashbacks when explanation is required. (Spoiler sentence): Remember, they are trying to conseal who the dragon is for much longer than the books. I believe Nynaeve's added backstory (re: her guardian being turned away from the White Tower) is to show her contempt for the sisters. It fits much better than trying to portray all the character's inner dialogue.

    • @jmhaces
      @jmhaces 3 роки тому +2

      The only thing that I was completely not cool with overlooking was the apparent absence of Bela in the show, but in one of the later episodes they do remark that one of the horses they are riding is in fact named Bela, so I'm somewhat pacified. She was the real MVP in the novel series.

    • @iogssothoth666
      @iogssothoth666 3 роки тому

      You must be kidding. A good adaptation requires cutting things out, and fusing some things together, and, as much as possible, at all costs, avoiding adding anything new, as it has impacts that need to be corrected later on that create all kinds of incoherence and bad storytelling.
      They added a lot of things, and the changes they made to the character fundamentally alter who they are as well as how their story arc make sense.
      They spent so much time on useless crap that wasn't in the book that they didn't actually have time to really establish the characters and their interactions.
      Mat and Perrin backstory change has a major impact on the following story.
      Matt is supposed to be the cheerful prankster who always dreamt of traveling. Perrin is the guy who wants to come back to live a simple life. Except that now, mat is the one who wants to come back, and Perrin is the one who wouldn't come back with a new love to the two rivers.
      Perrin's main arc has precisely to do that, normally, he would never make a hasty strike. It took something special with which he struggles for books to have him in an altered state where he did strike hastily, with consequences up till the last books.
      They turned Moiraine from a clever manipulator to a cold sociopath.
      Lan doesn't even stand up for Moiraine when she is questioned after healing Tam?
      Tam is now unable to fight off a single trolloc... Talk about diminishing the impressiveness of a heron mark...

    As a long time fan of the books (25+ years reading and rereading them)...I really enjoyed watching this with you. To see your surprised looks at the things going on was great.
    The One Power is the magic system in this world. To weave any sort of magic you have to use one, a couple, a few or all of them to achieve each type of weave. They include 1) Air 2) Earth 3) Fire 4) Water and 5) Spirit. So healing uses certain weaves, while throwing a fireball uses different weaves of one or a combination of these element. Yes, a little like Avatar the Last Air Bender.
    The Dragon is reborn, and she knows that 20 years ago a the Dragon was born...so that is why she was asking the Wisdom when she was born...and she found out she was 25-6, so she's too old. So she settled it that it was one of the four of them and took them away from the town...'cause the Fade and the Trollocs will follow them...and not touch the village anymore.
    Thanks. I will watch your other reactions to this show. You made me laugh and get excited. Thank you.
    Out of the three episodes...this was the weakest. Keep going.

    She, Moraine is an Aes Sedai of the blue Ajah. She has the ability to tap the "one power" which consists of air, fire, earth, water, and spirit. All Aes Sedai or "channelers" can use the one power. Some have more control over certain aspects of it. Depends on who and their affinity for those abilities.
