Hair Band Guitar Riffs with the 4 Magic Chords
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 лис 2024
- Are you ready to write the next hit hairband song? Just play these 4 chords!
The cool thing is I'm showing you how to make actual riffs out of this killer progression that so many hit songs have.
And this is somewhat focused on the hairband style of music from the 80s. Not necessarily hair 'metal' but more along the lines of the pop-rock. Think of bands like Bon Jovi, Poison, Warrant, Winger, and so on.
Oh, and I give you some TONE TALK at the end!!!
Keep it Metal,
Jason

Metal can be fun to play.
No need for all of the dark, angry, depressive style 24/7. I have a hair/ 80s hard rock band and I enjoy other genres as well. Keep your options open and just enjoy the music.
I'm with you on that. Not all of my lyrics for my latest album were dark (some, but not all, and there was an intended message behind all of the lyrics)
But I'm a huge fan of 80s style metal!
80s theatrical metal bands were the best. Costumes, power screams, choreography, vinyl and fuzzy vhs quality....yes please.
Jason, huge thanks for your work, from the UK. Helping me get back into guitar playing after a 25 year hiatus, I'm ashamed to say. I love your playing style, helpfulness and general approach to life!
Man, that's great that you're back to playing! Glad these vids are helping and I need to get over there to visit the UK at some point!
What I really like about your 'lessons' (and I use quotes because they are more like collaborations) is they are practical, useful to players of ALL levels, cool, fun, idea inspiring and skill building.
Thank you for that comment...that's my ultimate goal, to make practical lessons you can use!
Can't believe I'm just discovering your channel man .,awesome content.......
Welcome aboard!
I grew up playing this type of music another cool thing that I like to do is play not just your standard 5th and 4th interval power chords I also like to throw in a dimished 5th and major and minor 6ths. That's another way to kind of sketch out a melody into any progression.
🤘
There is not enough “tone talk” out there!
Much appreciated! With my ear learning the ropes so to say, I’m getting better at dialing in tones! But any pointers are so great, thanks! 🤘🏼
🙏🤘
From Minnesota. Thank you for your dedication to music. Love the work you. Thank you
🙏 🤘
I just found your channel and I am gunna be going back and watching absolutely everything.
Thank you, and thanks for the support!
My favorite type of metal. I just never got into that dark, evil shit. I can’t believe it outlasted hair metal the way it did.
Yeah, that's the thing about metal. It doesn't come and go like other genres.
jason i am really digging the channel i am an older player and they are really helping took the riffs that you showed here ran it thru my spark 40 and came up with some cool drum tracks to it really like the evh amp as well when i get a lil better think thats the one i will get for now spark 40is cool well anyway thanks for the vids keepem coming very cool bud
Thank you, Dan! I have a lot of older players on here, which is really encouraging (I'm 45). It's awesome that we're all staying in the game and still have the ability to progress!
Nice man, that got me out of a players block hahah, took me back to the simpler beginnings..
Great to hear that dude!
Super video!! Thanks!!
Yeah this is a really fun progression to play!
You are a great teacher.

Hey Jason!!! Killer video man and most definitely informative for sure!! I will definitely be watching (and playing) it over and over to get it down. Sounds killer! Love the way you break things down to instruct beginners like myself on how it done. Many many thanks bud!! I definitely love the tone talk too!! With your help of where you have parameters set (on both amp and pedal) and your explaining why def helps me understand more of each with every video!! You are the man!!! I really ove my new ESP too bro so happy I bought it!! I pick it up and I do not want to put it down. Thanks to you when i play it actually sounds like I'm playing music. Learned more from you in last few months than I have the last few years!! Sorry for the long comment.
Thank you for everything you do!! It looks like alot of work and I want you to know how much I appreciate you and all that you do!! 🤘😁🤘🍻🍻🍻
Dude, no need to apologize for the long comment. I appreciate that and most of all, glad to hear these lessons are helping! That's what it's all about!
BOOM!💥💥💥 awesome dude!!. I’m a little late to the party on this one, but at least I’m here now
Yeah dude these are some fun riffs to play!!
Great channel Jason, you have an excellent way of explaining this stuff.
🙏🏻🤘
Jason! you are going to get me to the next level! My playing has plateaued, your teaching style speaks to me, please keep on rocking the lessons!
That’s what it’s all about...reaching that next level! We all plateau but we must continue pushing forward!
Killer. Love how you teach it. 💪
🙏🤘
This is one badass video!!!
Thank you!
Also, check out my riff course if that's something you're interested in: metalmastermind.com/metal-riff-master/
This is brilliant. Fantastic lesson as always, and tone talk after that. Thank you sir.
Really glad you like the tone talk!! That's what makes our guitar community so amazing!
This is the third time I ever watched you man and I have to say I enjoyed it from the beginning to the end. Like the way you teach very much. I've been on here looking for a little while as I am self teaching myself but I'll tell you I can understand everything you're saying for sure. Thanks for taking the time out. I subscribed and I look forward to more of your videos. Metal on, peace.
Thanks Jason I have to check that out for sure
Another great lesson. So nice to build off those bars. Thanks bud !!

Glad you got that 20k, well deserved and thanks again for the dirt!!!

i love this guy helped me so much
🤘
Great riff thanks 🙏 you
🙏 🤘
Great video. Looks like I'm a year too late lol. Any MXR pedal to me is gold. I have many other pedals like Orange, Tech 21, JHS, but MXR seems to be my favorite. I recently acquired a Marshall dsl 40c which is pretty versatile with any genre of music. Even with acoustic. I have no idea how I ever got along without it before 😅🤘 thanks for this video. This is great stuff
Yeah, MXR makes some great pedals! I'm interested in trying the Tech 21 fly rig for both electric and acoustic. Looking for something a little better for that live solo gigs.
@@jasonstallworth you'll love it. Basically everything you need is right there. Most of the time it's all I use. It requires no effort to hook up and just play. I've had so much fun with adding other pedals with it and experimenting with it. If you love having all of the gain in the world at your foot, this pedal is definitely for you. It has crazy sick thundering wicked gain. I really love being able to tune with it. With the same foot switch you can set the tempo for the reverb effect and the speed of it. Great pedal. You might not like it, but I believe you'll love it if you aquire one. It was worth the price to me. But that's me, as you say "keep it metal!" He'll yea!
..IVE LEARNT SO MUCH FROM YOU OVER TIME JASON🙏..IT TRULY PUTS ME WHERE I WANT TO BE AND HAS HELP ME IN MY FUN AND ENJOYMENT IN PLAYING..THANKS SO MUCH BROTHER OF ROCK🤘🙏✌...YOUR APPRECIATED JAY..🙏

Really appreciate your lessons.
🤘🤘🤘
Grrr8 vibes coming from the channel...!!!👍
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Thanks for the lesson.
Glad it helps! These are fun riffs to play!
Thanks Jason for the tips! We never get to old to learn, right? PeAce ✌🏻it’s don’t stop believing the journey Riff!!!
Absolutely, brother...never too old!!
Hi Jason
When you first put these Dimarzios in you were hoping for more push and sustain for harder rock. At the time you were possibly not satisfied with the change. Is that still the case ? I think the music in this video the tone was absolutely perfect! Is that more attributed to the amp settings you explained or the pickups.
Thanks
Dude, this guitar is in the shop as we speak getting the original pickups put back in! Yeah, I just wasn't happy with those others.
Sick! Thanks a lot!!!
🙏🤘
@@jasonstallworth this is one of my favorite lessons! really appreachiate your work! thank you so much! love your style! ❤🤘
EVH sounds killer man.
🤘
Nice lesson👍 Don’t see too many Americans sporting Nightwish gear. Floor is incredible.
Dude, they're one of my favorite bands! Seen them live 3-4 times...pretty much every time they to come the Tampa or the surrounding area!
@@jasonstallworth I missed them in 2016 show in YBOR I had surgery couldn’t make it. Marco had left the band I see…Yes they are awesome. I love the drama the shows with Floor are incredible. All their vocalist have been great over the transition periods…Floor defiantly is the one!
I enjoy you talking about the tones, but can you do an entire video on diffrent pedals and settings with them? If you have a video I can't find it so I apologize if it's out there. But I think some of us don't know about anything about them and what to use when and maybe do some vids on songs that are out there and what pedals or Amp settings they used. Thanks!
Dude, I don't use a ton of pedals (just a few). So I'm not the best to talk to about that. I rely on the amp for the tone. I do have a post on what I use and my settings: www.jasonstallworth.com/metal-tones-virtual-and-real-amp-settings/
Improves my guitar skills. Thanks man.
🤘
Absolutely lesson ❤❤
Thank you
Awesome. Btw great shirt. Love Nightwish too. Saw them live at Wacken several times. Just amazing. So sad that Marco left the band. Greetings from northern Germany.
That was sad news, I love Marco and wish him the best!!
Love the Nightwish T-shirt Jason. I was lucky enough to be front row at the Decades concert and have interacted with Empuu. Even got a guitar pick from him.
Do you have some Power Metal guitar lessons ?
They’re one of my favorite bands and I’ve seen them almost everyone they’ve come to my area (last show where I got this shirt was in St Pete, FL). I do have some lessons on that style on my metal lesson playlist
@@jasonstallworth Ill look for them. Im just getting into guitar again. Your channel is so good. Very straightforward and you put the tabs on the screen. Most people you have to get the tabs from Patreon. Keep up the good work.

Hey man! I have a Boss Katana 50 amp. I'm a huge fan of hair metal. Ratt. Dokken. George Lynch for sure! I'm just curious on how I can get that hair metal sound from that amp. Do you know?
Love all of those bands! I actually have another video for 80s metal with this amp here: ua-cam.com/video/vvtahsSdIJ0/v-deo.html
Amazing
Dude, you may already have it but I'm just going back through some comments letting folks know about my new video course with tabs and backing tracks: metalmastermind.com/metal-riff-master/

Nightwish is awesome. Have you listened to Battle Beast? BTW, great lesson. Much appreciated.
I'm a diehard Nightwish fan and love some Battle Beast too!
Dude! You Rock! Appreciate your lessons! I'm over 50 and still learning guitar 🎸😃! Thanks
Really glad to hear these lessons help and man, it's awesome that you're still playing! A lotta guys get our age and give up, but this is actually the best time to pursue it!
More hairband magic please........
That's definitely coming!
Got a Q on something entirely different.. What's your favorite non-multi 7 string board dimensions? Specifically: Nut, 24th, Scale length, Radius and Fret-size? Please!
Norowing mine, but you've spent way more time..
Dude, I really have no idea. It sounds crazy but I rarely look at any of that stuff. I just play it, and if it feels and sounds good, I'll take it! lol
@@jasonstallworth Right on, I feel ya!! Thanks for taking the time to respond man, appreciate it!
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
🤘
At first i thought you were going t9 play ‘when i come around’ by greenday....and went...ohnoooooo....this is one of the very popular chord progressions tho.....perfect example of using theory, without using theory...:)
Lol...yeah, dude, you could go on and on with this one...Journey's Don't Stop Believing, U2's With or Without You, Richard Marx's Right Here Waiting, double time it and go with Men At Work's Land Down Under...the list goes on! (you can tell what my era is now!)
@@jasonstallworth hahaha yes sir....i could hear some journey inthere
how do you play with those sasuage fingers
🤣🤘
"Just a lonely boy, living in south detroit"
🤣 🤘
I literally wondered if "hairband" meant these were going to be the kind of tapping riffs you play when you have a hairband up by the nut so the open strings don't ring
Lol...I never thought of that but it makes sense!
It is a serious channel.
He teaches all genres of metal. If you don't' like the content change the channel.
Great advice, dude!
Nice T Shirt \m/\m/
Dude, we had such a blast at their show in St Pete! I can't wait till bands start touring again. My goal was to grab a show at least once a quarter, and Ybor gets a lot of our European bands in.
I trust anyone with a nightwish shirt with my life
If I were stranded with only one band I could listen to it would be Nightwish!
You remind me to Goldberg !
Lol! I'd love to meet that dude someday
try 1of my settings 2 o'clock, 2 o'clock, 2 o'clock, 2 o'clock,2 o'clock ,2 o'clock, with 0 pedals
I usually recommend folks starting with everything up the middle to see how to amp truly sounds. And then make subtle adjustments from there. Because not only is every amp different, but everyone plays a little differently so you have to adjust the EQ to what sounds good for your individual style.
Where's your spandex!!!!!???
Lol it’s tucked away somewhere where! Seriously, I did own a pair of parachute pants
@@jasonstallworth Lies!!! Prove it!! Hammer Time!
Fyi, book just arrived. I didn't know it was a pop up! So much fun!!! Sorry last easy jab for the day!
One of my stalkers who remembered me from a party in '83 was my roommate for a while in the '10s, and she stole ALL of my best '80s stage wear; but she accidentally re-introduced me to my current girlfriend. Both of 'em were 'jailbait' back in '83 when they were at the 18th birthday party of the girl who shredded my v-card back in high school; but they were both in their 40s when the 'stolen stage wear and bonding with my current girlfriend' situation played out. 🤣
Sounds like kiss tbh 😂
They were famous for those 4 chord progressions!
Never put a cup on your amp or rig; they can walk right off and spill all over everything.
It’s definitely not a good practice!!
I feel like an idiot, but what is this song
Just random riffs I'm making up
They're awesome!!! I have been searching playlists trying to find it lol. Thought it was Judas Priest. Anyway thank you for the content, I have improved so much thanks to you.
I really want to know, who's that one wanker on all your vids that gives you that one thumbs down... 🤔.
